My 300 km of running in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park inspires a call for change to modernize systems and unlock its full potential -- Over the past two years, I’ve run over 300 kilometers in 70 hours across the breathtaking trails of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. These trails have been my sanctuary, offering a connection to nature like no other. Yet, despite its immense potential, the park’s outdated entry systems and neglected trail maintenance often diminish the overall experience. As a runner, I start early to avoid the heat, but the gates only open at 7 AM, leaving many of us restricted. The entry process is unnecessarily duplicative, with a barcode system followed by manual verification—a stark contrast to the seamless systems seen in other national parks globally. It’s time to rethink and modernize Shivapuri’s approach, not just for hikers and runners like me but for the growing community of nature enthusiasts and sports tourists. A big shoutout to Bibhusan Bista dai for encouraging me to reflect on these experiences and share them publicly. I’ve been turning down all media requests for a post election analysis but talk of whether alliances will hold post elections reminded me of something I wrote 26 years ago - before a Lok Sabha Election result.   The basic premise: one who holds 30 seats may have the same power, or even more, as compared to someone who holds 245 seats.   A mathematical Power Index explains how   Quote Let’s get on with the “Power Indices” of the various political parties.   Think of it this way : suppose you require a 50% plus majority to form a government and there are 3 parties in the parliament with the following seat tally : 44%, 39% and 17%.   Now, any two of these can join together to form the government and therefore all three of them have exactly equal power, no matter that Party 3 has got less than half the number of seats that the first two have. This is a concept that is of use in any ‘majority wins’ decision rule from shareholder resolutions to jury decisions.   Suppose there are 4 parties in the fray this time around: A, B, C and D parties, having 35%, 34%, 17% and 14% of the seats resp. Again if a simple majority is needed to form a government, any two out of A, B & C can form a government whereas the Party D’s support is never really crucial to anyone.   If this party’s 14% is added onto the percentages of any of the first three parties, the sum does not exceed 50% and any larger coalition of parties doesn’t require its support anyway. Party D is therefore called a ‘dummy’ - an apt term for someone whose vote can never change a losing coalition into a winning one or vice versa.   The dummy has no power, while all the other three parties i.e. A, B and C have equal power.   This is inspite of the fact that Party C has far fewer seats than A and B and only a few more than the smallest one i.e. Party D   For those interested, there is a technical concept called the Banzhaf Power Index (BPI) of a group, party or person which is defined as the number of ways in which that group, party or person can change a losing coalition into a winning one or vice versa.   In the preceding example, the BPI of parties A, B and C are equal and that of Party D is zero.    In fact as an individual MP, you are better-off being a part of Party C than Party A or B because as part of the government you get a disproportionate share of the goodies. This is exactly what happened in U.P. where virtually every MLA of a marginal party who joined the BJP government was made a minister - something that was a remote dream for most BJP MLAs.   Unquote (First Global's weekly 'Markets, Majorities and Maths', January 1998)   Thus if a few smaller partners can hold whichever coalition government to ransom, it introduces uncertainty.   “The more things change, the more they stay the same” Hence, I can repeat a 1998 piece which has contemporary parallels   We may be in for some interesting times.   History also shows coalition governments have been pretty good for the economy and markets.

Changed reality brings up unfamiliar questions - am I relevant? Will friends still relate to me as before? What a heartwarming and endearing three days spend at the Women on Boards Program for Social Sector curated with so much rigour and passion by Indian School of Development Management (ISDM) and Governance Counts. There was a lot of heart, soul and emotions at play and a rewiring of our brains. A lot of our thoughts and understanding regarding the social sector turned out to be our myths and biases and kept getting busted one by one… 📍 The thought that the transition from corporate to social sector is so natural and easy, 📍 The thought that we could do a copy, paste of the corporate playbook, bluebook, greenbook and deliver the vision and mission, 📍 The thought that we could straight get on Boards of Social sector enterprises and drive strategy and scale 📍 And many more such naïve thoughts were all put to test, questioned and challenged! We got a few answers but a lot of questions remain unanswered…we have to go back and rethink and repurpose! Few very important learnings: 🔹 Passion, Perseverance and a Strong Will, are primary requirements to survive and thrive in the social sector 🔹 Interacting with humility and treating people with dignity is of utmost importance 🔹 You are not donating or giving charity, you are doing your mere duty as an ordinary Citizen of India, upholding the Principles of Equality, Justice, Liberty and Fraternity listed in the Preamble to the Constitution of India when chosing to be part of this sector 🔹 Selfishness is the rule of the game! You are here because you are selfishly wanting to protect the interests of and want to contribute to the communities and the causes that matter to you. 🔹 Scale does not matter, Impact does! 🔹 What you see and experience from the top of the pyramid does not make you a knower of the actual ground realities. 🔹 A 360 degree perspective of the parts and their sums and the interconnectedness (both random or by design) of these various parts influencing each other is essential 🔹 Wearing the hat of a problem solver will not work, instead one needs to be as curious as a baby and carry the attitude of a lifetime learner 🔹 Purpose and Intent matters, but Money matters the most, so don’t hesitate to open your pockets and get your network to open theirs also to support the different causes! INDIA and more than 70% of INDIANS require equality, justice, liberty and fraternity from the rest of their brothers and sisters! Instead, Lohia felt politics could never be unconcerned by religion. As a person who thrives on challenges, I constantly seek out kids with different life challenges and background to join IDUME LifeSite. Harshil Jobanputra (on my left) once told me about his brother, who wanted some clarity in his life and education. Before our meeting, I spoke with his mother and aunt, learning that he was also diagnosed with diabetes. I must admit, I wasn't familiar with Type 1 Diabetes, but I did my research before scheduling a walk-and-talk session with him. I was excited to meet him and know about his world as I was designing education system and I was feeling blessed with opportunity to have such experience. Jigar Jobanputra (on my right) joined me, and I began spending time with him regularly. Coming from a vernacular medium, he initially struggled with confidence. I helped him break through language barriers and gradually encouraged him towards financial and social independence. Together, we ventured into learning about entrepreneurship. Although entrepreneurship cannot be wholly taught, I shared some fundamental insights and assigned him tasks. Over time, he began to bridge the gap in his learning and, importantly, started to dream. Frequently, we discussed the experiences of living with Type 1 Diabetes on physical, emotional, social, and financial levels, prompting him to consider how he could make an impact and support others, particularly children with the same condition. Throughout the past 3-4 years, I’ve ensured that I treat him no differently than anyone else, maintaining high expectations for his learning goals. While we broke down barriers, I recognized that empathy is essential for creating an environment where he can thrive. I hope that, together, we will inspire millions of children to aspire to their dreams despite a diabetes diagnosis. In her letter to Mr Memani, Ms Augustine wrote that #AnnaSebastianPerayil (26) passed her Chartered Accountancy exams on November 23 last year and joined EY Pune on March 19, leaving the world just four months later, on July 20th. "She was full of life, dreams, and excitement for the future. EY was her first job, and she was thrilled to be part of such a prestigious company. The power of Executive Coaching Most recently we, Positive Momentum India, were involved with coaching women leadership worldwide for one of the large corporations in India. Towards the end of the 6-month long journey, this is what she had to say: "Thank you for your guidance and support during the last 6 months. I have listed a few areas where I received the most benefit: - Identifying a career goal – having been “busy” throughout my career, I didn’t think where I wanted to go, what my legacy will be, etc. Through consistent discussions and focus, you have helped me identify the area I would like to specialize in. Also, I identify what I would need to do, take steps in that direction & most importantly, ask for the opportunity. Today, I have taken the first few steps in this direction of a career in Sustainability – all thanks to you! - Seeking help–Thanks to your nudging me, nowadays, I ask for help often & this has made my life easier as I found that solutions usually exist in the group’s collective experience and intellect. Also, people are willing to share their wisdom more often than I thought they would - Delegating – I look for the right folks and delegate as much as possible – in all directions - Situation handling – I still use the techniques you taught me, of course, I still sometimes succumb to my previous ways, but I realize that and quickly get back on track - Looking at the larger picture – In the larger scheme of things, more issues one faces day-to-day are trivial. Thanks for helping me realize that. - Listening to understand and not to respond – I’m following this consistently and learning every day.  - From “Away” state to “Toward’’ state – Whenever I resist something, or I feel the tightening of my chest in a difficult situation, I ask myself.. what state am I in… where am I headed. I'm able to decide the next course of action - Saying ‘No’ – I'm now able to firstly decide on whether I want do something or not and if I decide not to (after thorough consideration) I am able to say ‘no’ in a manner that is still positive.  - Staying focused – I was academically gifted and I grew up during a time when Neurodivergence was not even a topic of discussion. Hence my inability to focus, the desire to “do more”, multiple hobbies, consistent feeling of not doing enough, inability to finish what I started, and quite funnily, my large knowledge bank of trivia was something that I was unable to connect to my being neurodivergent. Our interactions started at just about the same time I realized this. Your help in identifying what is worth my time, what I should focus on, defining success in more ways than what’s popular, what is tactical, what’s strategic in my life has helped me choose where I want to spend my energies. This has helped me gain a fair amount of mental peace.   I could keep writing, but these are the most important aspects I wanted to share with you. Investor interest and growth witnessed by impact investing globally in the last decade have been robust. However, ambiguity exists regarding AIF vehicles addressing this space. Countering this, SEBI in India introduced Social Impact Funds (SIFs). SIFs are structured to invest in both for-profit and non-profit organisations. While we appreciate this thoughtful step toward strengthening the impact investing space in the country, there are certain questions that should be addressed to enable SIF to deliver optimal outcomes for all stakeholders.
