#Bihar to Host #Asia’s #Widest Cable-Supported #Bridge <> A Landmark in Infrastructure Development : Bihar is on the cusp of a historic achievement, as it will soon be home to Asia’s widest cable-supported bridge, revolutionizing connectivity and setting a new benchmark in infrastructure development. This six-lane bridge, stretching across the Ganga river, symbolizes not only the state’s transformation but also its rise as a key player in modern engineering within Asia. Asia’s widest bridge, this engineering marvel, will rely entirely on cutting-edge cable support, offering a blend of strength and innovation. At 34 meters wide, the bridge will feature six lanes of traffic—three on each side—ensuring a seamless flow for vehicles. Each lane will measure 13 meters, providing ample space to prevent congestion and allow for easy transportation. Moreover, the bridge’s design caters to a wide range of commuters. It will have 1.5-meter-wide footpaths on both sides, allowing pedestrians, cyclists, and bikers to move freely and safely. The addition of street lighting throughout the bridge enhances safety, particularly for night-time travel, ensuring a well-lit and secure journey for all. Not only does this bridge connect Aunta to Simaria, it also represents a monumental leap in Bihar's infrastructural capabilities. With its advanced construction and focus on modern conveniences, it promises to become a model for future projects across the country and beyond. This bridge, supported by 18 pillars—nine of which stand within the river itself—spans 8.15 kilometers, including a 1.865-kilometer stretch directly above the Ganga. #BharatSancharNigamLimited (#BSNL), India’s government-operated telecom provider, has launched its new #DirectToDevice #SatelliteConnectivity service. Announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), this is India’s first satellite-to-device communication service, developed in partnership with US-based communications technology company #Viasat. Aimed at providing connectivity in remote areas, the new service is designed to help users stay connected even in isolated locations. The initiative is perceived with a significant paradigm shift in the communication landscape in India. The initiative, initially showcased at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, marks a significant step towards bridging India’s digital divide. BSNL’s satellite service will allow users to make emergency calls, send SoS messages, and even process UPI payments in situations where cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. However, the telecom provider has not yet clarified whether the service will support regular calls or SMS for everyday use outside emergencies. It remains to be seen if the feature will be included in existing plans or offered as a separate package. The service will likely benefit users across rural and remote regions, though further details on pricing and activation are expected soon. Direct-to-device connectivity allows mainstream gadgets, such as smartphones, smartwatches, or even vehicles, to connect seamlessly to terrestrial and satellite coverage. This enables devices to stay connected from any location without the need for dedicated hardware to connect to satellites. This new satellite-based service places India among the few countries offering direct satellite connectivity to consumers, underscoring BSNL’s role in expanding network access for all Indian users. This is a milestone and an initiative towards bridging the connectivity gaps in remote areas of India and further provide uninterrupted network access in areas with limited or no cellular coverage. It is directly addressing and remedying the issue of digital divide in India. TRAI Releases Recommendations on Sharing Telecom Infrastructure and Spectrum The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released recommendations on sharing telecom infrastructure, spectrum sharing, and spectrum leasing. This move aims to improve resource utilization, expand coverage, and enhance service quality in the Indian telecom sector. Key Recommendations: Infrastructure Sharing: - Telecom service providers can share passive infrastructure (towers, fiber) and active infrastructure elements (equipment) with each other. - In future USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund) projects, infrastructure must be shared with at least two other providers. - Existing USOF projects should explore sharing possibilities on a fair and transparent basis. - Telecom service providers building networks in remote areas with government funding must allow roaming by other providers for three years initially. Spectrum Sharing: - Inter-band spectrum sharing between access service providers should be allowed. - TRAI recommends exploring Authorized Shared Access (ASA) for utilizing spectrum assigned to non-telecom entities. - Field trials for ASA-based sharing between willing service providers are encouraged. - Spectrum leasing among access service providers should be permitted. Managed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the policy aims to supplement state-level initiatives with tax breaks, regulatory clarity, and talent development in areas like #AI and #cybersecurity. Smaller cities unable to host large-scale setups will still benefit through tailored incentives for smaller GCCs specializing in sectors like healthcare and finance. This move reflects a broader intent to #decentralize economic hubs, leverage untapped regional talent, and strengthen India's position as a global tech innovation hub. This aligns with the fast-growing GCC market, projected to hit $100 billion by 2030. In fact, several Indian states are intensifying their competition to attract GCCs by implementing new policies and incentives aimed at multinational corporations. Telecom Act 2023 mandates administrative allotment of satellite spectrum as opposed to auctions .... while this aligns with global best practices, it is counterintuitive.... won't auctions be more transparent and lucrative? The need for technical feasibility, prevention of interference, reduction of financial barriers, alignment with global standards, and prioritization of public interest drives global focus on administrative allotment as elaborated below:- 1. Unlike 4G/5G, satellite communications involve complex technical requirements that make auctioning impractical (allocation must consider propagation characteristics, coverage areas, and interference with existing systems, which are not easily addressed in an auction format). 2. Auctions could lead to fragmented allocations that do not account for the need for contiguous frequency bands, essential for effective satellite operations. 3. Auctions can create significant financial barriers for new entrants and start-ups, limiting competition. High bidding costs may deter smaller companies from participating, which contradicts the goal of fostering innovation in the satellite sector. 4. By adhering to ITU guidelines and avoiding competitive bidding, countries can ensure equitable access to satellite spectrum and promote cooperation among nations. 5. Many regulations prioritize public interest and government functions over profit-driven motives associated with auctions. It is still very much relevant for automating road transport. The allocation of spectrum for satellite communications in India is currently at a critical crossroads, with discussions centered around the method of allocation – auction-based versus administrative. Personally, I lean towards the auction-based approach for several reasons: 1) **Promotes Competition**: Auction-based allocation fosters competition in the industry, leading to innovation and improved services. 2) **Transparency**: This method is more transparent, crucial given India's history of spectrum allocation controversies like the 2G scandal. Transparency is key to ensuring fairness and accountability. 3) **Revenue Generation**: Auction-based allocation tends to generate more revenue for the government, which can be utilized for various developmental purposes. 4) **Leadership Concerns**: I harbor reservations towards Starlink and Kuiper due to their leadership's erratic behavior in the US. However, if they secure spectrum through auction, I respect the process. 5) **Historical Context**: Administrative allocation has traditionally been reserved for government purposes, while the Indian Supreme Court has previously ruled in favor of auction-based spectrum allocation. This pivotal decision will shape the future of satellite communications in India, impacting competition, transparency, revenue generation, and industry leadership. Engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro will be a consortium partner for E2E Cloud, a New Delhi-based AI Cloud service provider, for INDIAai Mission's Rs. 10,000-crore GPU tender, sources told The Economic Times. “L&T prefers to go as one team rather than compete. E2E will front or prime this for them. E2E will be the primary bidder. L&T is a consortium partner for them,” a source told ET. L&T and E2E did not respond to ET’s request for comment. The last date for filing the bids is November 28 (Thursday). The tender is part of the government’s initiative to set up public AI cloud infrastructure with a capacity of at least 10,000 GPUs through a public-private partnership under the India AI Mission. November 28 marks the third extension of the deadline to submit bids, which was originally set for September 6 and later pushed to October 16 and then to November 12. While E2E procures the GPUs, L&T will provide the data centre infrastructure to house them. This consensus comes days after L&T on November 5 announced that it will acquire a 21 per cent stake in E2E, in an all-cash transaction of Rs 1,406 crore. The strategic investment, L&T executives had said, helps expand the company’s Cloud service offering as part of the data centre business. L&T currently owns two data centres – Panvel (2MW) and Chennai (12 MW), which it offers to third-party customers. E2E has co-located servers with Netmagic in Greater Noida with a capacity of 3.2MW housing the majority of its GPU infrastructure. Two smaller facilities in Mumbai and Noida house its CPUs. As per the bid document, primary and secondary partners can pool resources to meet the eligibility criteria. Early September, Seema Ambastha, chief executive, data center business, L&T, had told ET, over email, “We meet all the pre-qualification and technical qualification criteria.” Tarun Dua, chief executive of E2E Networks, had told ET late September, “The relaxations on revenue qualifications have allowed us to qualify directly, and we deeply appreciate this flexibility.” NSE-listed E2E Networks late October had announced that it is the first company to bring NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs to the Indian market which delivers up to 1.9X higher inference performance compared with NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs. This is expected to enable businesses to tackle more complex AI models and drive innovation across startups, MSMEs and large businesses alike. The company had raised Rs. 420 crores from the market for procurement of the GPUs. It has so far received 256 H200 GPUs with more GPUs being procured soon. E2E Cloud's flagship product, TIR – an AI development studio – will be the first in India to feature H200 GPUs, giving developers access to cutting-edge infrastructure. Other bidders for the tender include Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), Amazon Web Services (AWS), NTT DATA, and Yotta Data Services Private Limited, among as many as 30 companies that include data centres and hyperscalers.
