From Layoffs to Job Growth: How India’s IT Sector Is Turning the Tide. After several challenging quarters, India’s IT sector is showing clear signs of recovery. In the September quarter, five of the top six IT companies—TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and LTIMindtree—collectively hired over 17,500 employees. This marks a significant reversal of the declining headcount trend that persisted for nearly seven quarters. HCLTech was the only company among the top tier to see a reduction in its workforce, trimming 780 jobs due to the divestment of a joint venture. Despite this, the overall outlook for the industry appears positive. The hiring turnaround coincides with strong deal activity in the first two quarters of FY25. The top companies secured approximately 33 major contracts in July and August alone. After a period of cautious hiring and workforce reductions driven by slower growth, IT firms are now building talent pipelines equipped with advanced skills to meet the demands of new projects and an improving market. This recovery highlights the sector’s resilience and its ability to adapt to changing business conditions. With a healthy deal pipeline and a renewed focus on skill development, the IT industry is poised for sustained growth in the coming quarters. The shift also underscores the importance of staying agile and prepared for emerging opportunities in a rapidly evolving market. Had a wonderful discussion today on CNBC Awaaz, "Consumer Adda", a show which inspires millions in India to speak up on Consumer related topics. Today I discussed with my panel of eminent guests like Ridhima Dua (Relationship Coach) and Nirali Bhatia (Cyber Psychologist ) on the Impact of Smartphone on Relationships these days and how to control them. As the world shifts from Software-as-a-Service to Service-as-a-Software, intuitively, Indian companies should have a significant advantage. The Indian ecosystem has already become great at delivering fantastic software products and is the world leader in the digital services ecosystem. If we marry these two together, should we not be at the forefront of the AI-led services ecosystem in the coming decade? I was reading Sonya Huang and Pat Grady's blog and loved how they laid out the new business model of Service-as-a-Software. I have had this hypothesis for the last 18 months, and I feel Indian founders should take the lead in this ecosystem and bring it to life. Sales teams that: - respond right away to an inbound lead - do same day follow ups - set up POCs in a day instead of a week just compete better. 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬: I have always felt strongly against the idea of exit interviews, I believe it is too late in the feedback chain to get much in terms of gathering feedback from someone who is leaving the company . There are certainly people who argue that documenting why someone is leaving is good to improve what needs to be done. If we are waiting for employees to give feedback on what is wrong and what needs to be improved as part of exit interview then I think we are doing it wrong. If you truly value employee feedback, identify ways to gather feedback from them periodically and try to improve things. Here are few alternative approaches that can be used to gather employee feedback: 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬: Conduct periodic interviews with current employees to understand their satisfaction and concerns before they consider leaving. This builds trust and allows you to address issues before they lead to someone leaving. This should be done atleast once every 6 months.  Make sure to document key points and action items that are discussed. Report back to the employee with any solutions or changes planned based on their feedback.  𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐬: Implement short surveys throughout an employee's tenure to track satisfaction over time. Use a variety of question formats to keep survey engaging. Use rating scales(strongly agree to strongly disagree) to gauge sentiment. Have open ended questions that allow space for employees to elaborate on their thoughts. It is important to keep it short (10-15 mins) to maintain focus and maximize participation. Explain how the feedback will be used and how it will benefit them. Inform employees of the key findings and any planned actions based on the feedback. 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬: Provide anonymous channels for employees to share their feedback and concerns without fear of retribution. Consider anonymous feedback tools that integrate with your existing communication channels. Emphasize the importance of confidentiality throughout the process and explain how the system protects anonymity (e.g., not integrated to active directory, no IP address collection). Be transparent about how the feedback will be used and how often it will be reviewed. 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧-𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲: An open-door policy can be a powerful tool to improve employee retention by fostering a sense of trust, open communication, and employee empowerment. Open-door policies demonstrate a willingness from management to be transparent and approachable. Managers should actively listen to employee concerns and demonstrate a genuine interest in their well-being. Don't let issues raised through the open-door policy fall by the wayside. Follow up with employees and take action on the concerns whenever possible. By implementing these methods, you can get ongoing feedback and create a more positive work environment, potentially reducing turnover.

Here is a QUESTION THAT HAS BEEN HAUNTING ME FOR LONG. Please share your thoughts in the comments. My sojourn into full-time teaching (along with my work!) started in 2009 when one of the Professors, Dr K Chandrasekaran (a rare academic with a mind for product design!), requested I take a course on CREATIVE DESIGN and later got extended to EMBEDDED SYSTEMS and ELECTRONIC PACKAGING (this course encouraged me to write a book on the same topic. I was taking these courses for about five years before my job made me shift to Vizag. However, I have been teaching various forms focusing on basic System Design, Engineering, electronic manufacturing and EVs (last 5 years). During this duration, I saw many types of courses, starting from a textbook-based manufacturing course to ML/AI. But what surprised me was most of these courses were a collection of topics and applicability in practice is a big issue. I have been searching for a course "how to design hardware for an ML engine in practice. My search often led to a dead end. Most of these courses are theoretical and don't deal with "how and why". Mostly dealing with "What" only. None of these so-called courses ever teach you the basics so that application becomes easy. Are you facing a similar situation? Let me know in the comments.
