Here’s some great news for health tech / age tech! My main man Anurag Ram Chandran and his co-conspirator Ayush Agrawal have launched Kubo Care Private Ltd : a technology platform to assist senior living. I've seen their PoCs, and they are doing some really exciting work. Big props to Antler India for getting this talent together and giving them an ecosystem to conceive and then start executing this idea! More than the PoC, I've seen the guys upfront and I can tell you that they really want to solve for better living for our senior citizens. With more and more intra and inter national migration of the newer generation, we need technology to help us take care of fastest growing population in India today : our senior citizens. Healthy, safe, happy, respectable and comfortable aging is not just a social responsibility to maintain the fabric of society, but also a massive business opportunity. The middle class 60+ population is also more independent than ever. They don’t want to travel to the US and spend time in cold places where they are always dependent on someone to drive them around. They want their activities, community, shopping and routines (which are often better than those of much younger people). Technology to enable this is a massive opportunity. My friends at Ubiqare Health have also been working on this opportunity : remote monitoring technology for healthy to palliative usecases. The beauty of building a company is that you can create something that never existed. Here’s hoping that Kubo et al can create something brilliant, that our elders will be proud of and delighted to use 😁

M&A and turnaround of healthcare facilities!   Took the Masterclass on 28 September.   India is the fastest growing major economy. It is the fifth largest economy and the third largest in terms of PPP. Healthcare industry is one of the biggest employers employing ~7.5 million people. Current size of the healthcare industry is $372 billion and is expected to increase to $638 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 16-17%. India still spends less than 5% of its GDP on healthcare, as against the OECD countries 8-10% and the US a whopping 20%.   Most legacy providers are consolidating aggressively and almost 30000 crores has been invested over the last 4 years with some mega deals have also been signed, powered by PE firms. Part of this investment could be used to extend delivery to Tier2/3 towns wherein the care delivery remains abysmal.   Integration of the newly acquired healthcare facilities (brownfield projects) becomes paramount for the providers/ PE firms to cerate value for their stakeholders. It entails design and execution of a prudent comprehensive business strategy.   Greenfield healthcare projects present a unique challenge to operationalize and turn profitable since all expenses are front loaded. In the absence of comprehensive strategy, turnaround is well-nigh impossible.   I’ve brought out key highlights of the same during my masterclass. How does India deliver “Care” to rural communities through Digital Health? The mission of an ideal Digital Health Solution should be to deliver hospital-grade care, anytime and anywhere across India & the globe. The Solution should enable multiple health screens & deliver high-quality care regardless of whether the rural community has a local Doctor or a trained Nurse or whether they have power or WiFi, etc. While challenges like power & WiFi can be addressed through technology, how does one deliver health screens & diagnostics without the presence of a local Doctor or Nurse? Enter the ASHA Worker. THE most critical “Non-Technology” component of our Digital Health Solution. It is the Asha worker who ensures that all tasks related to creating a patient profile, capturing patient symptoms, and measuring patient vitals, are completed efficiently despite the unavailability of qualified medical professionals. The Asha workers also visit patient’s homes to provide door-to-door care – especially for older patients with mobility issues and for expectant mothers who may not be able to visit a clinic. And finally, there’s an emotional element to delivering good quality “patient care” that cannot be fulfilled by ANY technology, and which is warmly delivered by the Asha worker. The Asha workers also need to be provided with a digital health solution that has advanced telemedicine capabilities but is extremely easy to use. That was the design mantra for the RHEMOS Health Station. India’s smallest & easy-to-use rural care solution. It enables Asha workers to administer 60+ critical vitals, blood/urine & pre-natal tests in village PHCs. The Health Station can also be carried to a patient’s home to deliver high-quality care ensuring huge patient convenience. Once it measures vitals, it transmits test results to App & Cloud to enable remote Doctor interventions & treatment. RHEMOS also works offline if cellular networks are unavailable & enables local health screens and collects test results, which are all transmitted to cloud once the cellular network is restored. It is also designed to work on Battery & Bluetooth to ensure no dependence on power or WiFi. And finally, with the capability to measure 60+ vitals & bio-markers, it can be used by Asha workers to deliver comprehensive primary care, chronic care, prenatal care, NCD & Anaemia detection health camps, etc. In conclusion, it is the Asha workers that define the success of digital health & enable us to connect rural patients with remote doctors for treatment. They reduce our reliance on medical staff and drastically cut care delivery costs. They accelerate rural care implementations, and ensure easy access to affordable and high-quality care in remote and underserved rural communities, which also makes this a massively scalable initiative. 🚨 Beware of Bajaj Healthcare Tie-Up 🚨 I feel compelled to share my recent disappointing experience with Bajaj Healthcare. What seemed like a promising collaboration turned into a frustrating ordeal. Here’s why: Unacceptable Delays: It took Bajaj Healthcare three months to make our profile live. They were extremely proactive until the contract money was paid. After that, communication drastically declined. False Promises: We were assured a steady flow of patients once our profile went live. It's been a month now, and we haven’t received a single patient through their platform. Poor Customer Service: Post-payment, they’ve stopped responding to our calls and messages. Their lack of professionalism is astonishing. Misselling: We were told that the max deduction will be ₹100 per patient but later they changed the terms to flat 25% of the consultation amount. On raising this to the seniors, they informed that no such plan exists now. This experience has been a significant letdown. I urge others to think twice before engaging with Bajaj Healthcare. Transparency and reliability are critical, and unfortunately, Bajaj Healthcare falls short on both counts. Its starts in your Teens. Well said Prashant Desai And ends with a health crisis. Remember the days when eating outside was a once-in-a-year-special-occasion thing? Four times a year—max. Now? Four times a week. That’s 208 cheat meals a year, minus the guilt, but plus the calories and chaos. What changed? The Internet, impulsive buying, and those food delivery platforms mushrooming on every corner. Unchecked kitchen hygiene, endless discounts, and clever marketing have turned “convenience” into a ticking time bomb for our health. Let’s face it—what my mom cooked in her tiny kitchen with love, care, and actual hygiene standards cannot be compared to what’s churned out in some of these places. But hey, it’s fast, it’s cheap, and it comes with “free delivery” (read—a health bill later). The result? Health checkups at 18? Hell, they were meant for 40. What was once a midlife reality check is now a teenage necessity. Kids, teenagers, and young adults collapsing from cardiac arrests. Yep, 7% of deaths in students are now due to lifestyle habits. Let that sink in. Too much food, but not the right kind. Zero outdoor activities. Endless screen time. Obesity, mental health issues, digestion problems—pick your poison. In the MedTech startup world, it's not just about creating high-quality medical devices. You also have to tackle challenges like mindset, funding, collaborations, resistance, and regulations. MedTech is a long-term industry, one should not expect quick wins in terms of revenue. Remember, we live in a society where health is not given that much priority until the condition is severe or evident. We need to change how people see MedTech startups in India. ~40% revenue from DIGITAL only!! Apollo Hospitals in their financial report 2023-2024 revealed almost ~40% of their revenue comes from digital health and pharmacy distribution channel! That's a sizable share for a big conglomerate like Apollo!! However, if you look closely, their DAU is only 2% of app registered users (33Mn)!!
