While scrolling through Instagram, I saw a post of cab services aggregators. Usually, vendors charge 25% to 30% commission from cabs or rikshaw drivers on every trip, which eventually increases the price of the trip for passengers and reduces the earning of drivers. A new vendor found an amazing solution to this problem. They simply changed the business from revenue sharing model to subscription model where drivers need to pay a fixed subscription amount on a daily basis and take unlimited rides, which reduces the price for passengers and increases the revenue for drivers. The number of vendors or supplies will increase through this model, and the cost can be reduced by maintaining efficiency and use of technology. Just a thought came to mind, Isn't it possible for any food tech company or online travel aggregators(OTA's) to run on the same subscription model rather than charging commission on every order or booking received, to restaurant owners or property host ? What are your thoughts on the same ?

Court orders Uber to pay over Rs 50,000 to customer for failing to provide cab to airport, resulting in missed flight. Finally, there is an accountability with cab aggregators for missing flight. [MMT Appreciation Post] - MakeMyTrip’s Acquisition of Happay from Cred – My Take Cred saw travel as a natural extension of its business (overlapping customer segments) and acquired Happay to expand its offerings. Worth noting, Happay’s largest shareholder at the time was Sequoia (32%), which also backs Cred. Sequoia’s first investment in Happay dates back to 2015, so the 2021 acquisition likely had multiple layers at play. Happay didnt succeed in vertically integrating expense and travel management (TMC). Instead, they became a go-to expense solution partner for many TMCs. Here’s where things got interesting: Travel and expense management is all about 1) inventory 2) operational intensity 3) low margins. Points 2 and 3 didn’t align with Cred’s DNA—personal lending operates at a juicy 30%+ gross margin, while travel management hovers around 6–8%. and they strength was more prod + brand and not hardcore ops (aka swiggy/zomato). Meanwhile, MakeMyTrip was quietly strengthening its enterprise game. They acquired Quest2Travel during the pandemic (talk about timing!) and also re-wrapped their B2C product as MyBiz for solopreneurs, CAs, SMEs. The missing link for enterprise customers? Expense management. Happay acquisition—brilliantly filling that gap. Those who know me know how much respect I have for MMT as a brand. Integrating acquisitions isn’t easy, yet they’ve successfully managed Goibibo, RedBus, Quest2Travel, Savaari, and now Happay. It’s also no secret that MMT has been lucky—no one in India has truly challenged them (Yatra or Cleartrip could’ve really given them a run for their money, or oyo could have nailed alternate acco). But guess, luck is hard work translated to glory :) the quality of MMT's execution is immense and no wonder they will nail this too. Personally, as an outsider, I’ve always had incredible support from MMT folks whenever I’ve had industry questions. They’re not just big—they’re big-hearted too. Watching them build a travel behemoth is inspiring to say the least! I keep referring to this slide when it comes to the market opportunity. If you are a brand like Pickyourtrail catering to the Upper middle and HNI class population in India - there will be a minimum 10x explosing in your target segment over the course of next 6-8 years. While short term challenges like hiring, culture, geo-political challenges exist - if we stay committed then there are many interesting outcomes possible in the next decade. The long thinking helps us face short term hurdles with better conviction. If you have been thinking of starting a d2c brand, now is the time. Pickles, food, lifestyle, nutraceutical supplements, coffee roasters (my fav option 😂) , vernacular high quality content platforms and many more options. Yes market will always be crowded, but execution is where the $ is.

It’s a question we hear all the time: why launch another skincare D2C brand after mCaffeine ? For us, it started with countless conversations with consumers, which revealed a gap in the market. That’s when, 2.5 years ago, HYPHEN was born as an idea - with a simple but powerful idea: to hyphenate Nature and Science, combining the best of both to create products that ensure our consumers ‘Have It All’. After launching the brand, the next step was to leverage the strategies that we used for mCaffeine and that became our playbook. We focused on the 3Cs - listening to our consumers, building the right categories, and expanding across the right channels. We invest time in perfecting our formulations, even when it means countless trials and retrials. Our feedback loop is always active across departments, helping us adapt and improve quickly to deliver the best results. My 6-year stint at OYO recently ended. Reflecting back on the journey made me realize how my life has been altered permanently. Witnessed from close quarters how OYO was built by solving problem after problem through people, culture, process, systems, and products. I am 100% sure that no other organization could have provided the breadth of learning opportunities that I had received at OYO. Really grateful to Sonal Sinha and Vineet Widhani for trusting and taking me in their team and to Yogesh Miglani for referring me. When I had decided to move on from my previous job, I had reached out to almost 30 of my batchmates at IIMB, and the doors that opened fast were at OYO. I moved all the way from Bangalore to Gurgaon. The city was cold (and not knowing Hindi didn’t help either), but people at OYO were warm. Looking back, the one thing that had a profound impact on me was the people whom I worked with at OYO. It was wonderful working with people from around the globe, from East to West (Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, UK, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, US, and many more that I am unable to recall). It would have been more geographies had COVID not temporarily disturbed the growth. I was thinking, what could have been the reason for over 20,000 people across the globe to work together so frictionlessly at one point? It could not be for simple economic reasons. Clearly, there was a powerful story, a bigger purpose, and, more importantly, a mission. The mission was to support and empower people running hospitality businesses. What else could keep OYOpreneurs working round the clock, 7 days a week, without any expectations? While Zomato presented another quarter of nice results, if you are from the FMCG space or even at a broad level interested in how people’s shopping behaviours are changing, then the key metrics for Blinkit present a ring-side view on how the growth of the Quick-commerce channel in India is shaping up. Some key points shared today were that - - GOV per store has grown even on an enhanced store base, with an increased assortment beyond grocery and as high as 25k in some places ! - Share is not being taken away from the Kiranas or the value focused retail stores. - Capabilities built up over time are driving the growth in consumption, eg. in ice-creams. - People want things faster, and hence there have been gains from the broader ecommerce ecosystem. - Some share shift from mid-sized and large sized organised retail stores within the larger cities.
