Crack down on SPAM calls & SMS Airtel has launched India’s first network-based, AI-powered spam detection solution that will solve the issue of spam calls and messages for its customers. Airtel claims that the newly introduced tool (designed by Airtel data scientists) will alert Airtel customers in real-time to all suspected spam calls and SMSes. Additionally, the solution will also alert customers to malicious links received via SMS, for which they have built a centralised database of blacklisted URLs for checking these malicious links forwarded in SMS. The effectiveness of this tool will be known in coming times, however, this is a step in the right direction for combating the menace of spam calls & SMSes. Similar solutions must be deployed free of cost by all TSPs and the same should get auto-activated for all subscribers. The Government of India (GoI) has already taken a positive steps in this direction by allocating 10-digit numbers with the prefix 160 for service and transactional calls. Customers can expect to receive calls from these 160-prefix series assigned to Banks, Mutual Funds, Insurance Companies etc for making transactional and service calls. ‘The India smartphone market is expected to achieve its highest ever value, and may cross $50 billion in 2025, driven by high-end devices from Apple and Samsung, Counterpoint Research said in a study. Jio Platforms 5G Stack is fast evolving into an AI-Native architecture with the help of the Jio Brain Platform. In another first, the Jio Brain Real-Time AI Inferencing engine has been incorporated in the 5G SA Core architecture. This we call as the Real-Time AI Services (RTAS) Stack. The RTAS architecture enables inferencing of AI algorithms not only at the MEC edge, network, but also in the 5G Core signalling plane. A Fantastic analysis by Parag Kar as always!! 👏 👏 He amazingly connects recently released MPCE (Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure) report from GoI and correlates with each operators tariff hikes, upon the analysis a not so surprising fact emerges 😯 60-70% of the population can't afford the most affordable pack from mobile operators!!!! At the same time, operators cant price any lower tariff packs making the situation catch22!! Yet another reason why public policy and thinking is important to keep both business and common folks running!! Really glad to read such data backed posts like these are written!

Ah, the saga of URL whitelisting in India - a tale that would make even Kafka scratch his head and wonder if he'd accidentally written a new bureaucratic nightmare. The Great URL Whitelist Debacle In a move that surprised absolutely no one familiar with the Indian government's penchant for digital overreach, the Department of Telecommunications, India (DoT) decided to embark on a quixotic quest to implement URL whitelisting norms. The idea was simple: create a list of approved URLs that #telecom #operators would graciously allow their users to access. Because nothing says "digital empowerment" quite like treating the entire nation as if it were browsing the internet with parental controls. Telcos' Collective Facepalm Unsurprisingly, the telecom operators - those paragons of customer service and network reliability - found themselves in the unusual position of being the voice of reason. They argued that implementing such a system was about as practical as trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. The Cellular Operators Association of India - COAI , presumably after a long sigh and a stiff drink, pointed out that: 1. The sheer volume of URLs would make maintaining a whitelist a Herculean task. 2. The dynamic nature of the internet means new URLs pop up faster than government committees can convene. 3. The potential for service disruptions was higher than the number of potholes on Indian roads. The #Technical #Tango The telcos, in a rare display of unity that didn't involve price fixing, highlighted the technical challenges. They argued that implementing such a system would require "deep packet inspection" - a phrase that sounds about as pleasant as a root canal without anesthesia. Moreover, they pointed out that this brilliant plan would likely slow down internet speeds to a crawl, making dial-up modems look cutting-edge in comparison. One can almost imagine the government's response: "But think of all the time people will save not having to decide which websites to visit!" The #Privacy #Paradox In a twist of irony so delicious it could be served as dessert, the telcos expressed concerns about user privacy. Yes, the same entities that probably know more about our browsing habits than our own mothers suddenly developed a conscience about snooping on user data. It's like watching a fox worry about henhouse security. The Government's Masterplan The DoT, in its infinite wisdom, suggested that telcos could simply block all URLs except those on the whitelist. Because nothing screams " #DigitalIndia " quite like turning the internet into a walled garden smaller than a postage stamp. It's purely a game more of Execution and technology. As per the govt latest data, ther are only 35 million home broadband in India with almost 2 TSP and more than 1500 ISPs in india. In countries like India, faster Broadband penetration must catch up equally to bridge digital divide with only wifi hotspot in very less time and in very less capex on which we are working on. OTT providers like WhatsApp are increasingly looking at stealing the OTP market from SMS. I am disappointed by the lack of imagination. Yes sticking with OTPs on a different channel seems like a quick win and simple shift, but it doesn't deliver the big benefits of rich messaging channels. OTPs can still be phished on any channel, why not shift to more secure alternatives to OTP, such as Passkeys or YES/NO dialogues? That would be win/win. Mobile data consumption - From habit of monthly consumption to daily consumption !! Not too long back, having 2GB-3GB of monthly mobile data packs was a luxury and was taken more than enough. Infect most of the users were hardly able to use completely as there were not sufficient requirements. In came the 4G revolution (no prizes for guessing who did it) !!! The technology not only allowed high connectivity speeds but also completely transformed the habits of users. Today, 2-3 GBs of data consumption a day is very common and the price of affordability has made it a basic necessity. From normal browsing/emails usage to high services bundling of contents, real time entertainment, video calls and countless apps has already made 4G in hands of every Indian. I cant think of anything we can't do with mobile in our hand. 5G is taking the country to next level of digital India with massive speeds, M2M and highly latency sensitive applications getting on ground. We won't be surprised if limited data packs become history with unlimited application based usage taking the front seat......it is consumer defined market and only consumer is going to decide this. From following the world to leading the world, digital India is showing the way to world !!!
