Sectoral/thematic schemes are becoming the number one choice of the mutual fund industry. Details: The momentum in NFOs showing no signs of letting up, with the Rs 65-trillion Indian asset management industry set to see nine new fund launches in the first week of September. With 112 NFOs collectively raising Rs 65,223 crore till July 2024 end, the mutual fund industry is en route to breaking the 2021 tally. In 2023, 108 new offers collected Rs 49,327 crore, 115 NFOs raised Rs 34,873 crore in 2022 and 100 NFOs garnered Rs 79,584 crore in 2021. #Budget2024 Still think SGB investors are the only victim of customs duty cut on gold? The truth is that the government has earned about Rs 620 crore from redeeming sovereign gold bonds at a lower price but has also lost Rs 26,000 crore worth of potential revenue due to the customs duty cut. As per Aksha Kamboj ​"Revenue loss to the government may be approximately Rs 26,000 crore due to customs duty cut but the same is likely to be compensated by import of gold through the official channel. The Government will benefit up to Rs 620 crore in the F.Y 2024-2025 on account of redemption of SGB, as nearly 10 tons of gold bonds will mature in F.Y 2024-2025." SGBs remain the most expensive borrowing instrument for the government but this does not mean that the customs duty cut was for reducing the SGB redemption liability. (As per Sachin Kothari, "​The Sovereign Gold Bond issuance began in November 2015 and was intended to provide a secure and simple alternative to physical gold. But SGB is one of the most expensive tools for government borrowing now as gold prices have elevated. And it seems, uncertain whether the government will issue new securities during the current fiscal year. When the SGB plan was implemented in 2015, the customs tax was set to 10%. It was later raised to 15% in 2019, 2021, and ultimately in 2022. These duty hikes resulted in bigger returns for investors, which raised the government's redemption liabilities. If there had been no customs duty cut, gold prices would have been trading around Rs 7600/gram, which would have led to an outflow of nearly Rs 2090.65 crore." So why was customs duty cut on gold? ​As per Sachin Kothari, "The core reason for lowering customs tax on gold in India is to create a balanced, transparent, and competitive market that reduces illicit activity, promotes industry growth, and coincides with larger economic goals." As per Aksha Kamboj, "The Government has already stated that they wish to control illegal import of gold in the country and hence this is the major reason to control gold price." As the Indian government trains its sights on a sovereign rating upgrade, it needs to drastically improve upon two key metrics to reach its goal – the size of its debt burden, and the affordability of its debt. The key to India’s rating upgrade lies in slashing not only the debt-to-GDP ratio, but also its affordability ratio or interest costs as a percentage of revenues, Christian de Guzman, senior vice president at Moody's Ratings told Informist Media Pvt Ltd in an interview. "The question that is being asked of us is what's it going to take for us to rethink our rating. It is improvements in the debt-to-GDP, and more importantly, improvements in debt affordability," de Guzman told me and Pratigya Vajpayee. Even though the Indian government has brought down its fiscal deficit by 440 basis points over the last three years, de Guzman pointed out that its debt metrics leave a lot to be desired. 🚨 Wealth management platform Waterfield Advisors in talks to raise Rs 130 crore Waterfield Advisors, a wealth management platform founded by former banker Soumya Rajan, is in talks to raise Rs 85-130 crore (around $10-15 million) from a clutch of investors, people aware of the developments told Moneycontrol. Singapore-based Jungle Ventures, Family offices (FO) and other high net-worth individuals (HNIs) are likely to participate in the round. “The company is looking to expand its bouquet of offerings and is hence looking for money,” one of the persons cited above told Moneycontrol. “The talks with Jungle Ventures are in advanced stages and will likely materialise over the coming weeks. According to an Informist poll, CPI likely fell to an 59-month low of 3.7% in July from 5.08% in June, thanks mainly to a favourable base effect. New generation wealthtech startups are becoming asset management companies. Armed with an AMC licence the likes of Zerodha Fund House Groww Mutual Fund and Navi Mutual Fund are trying to carve out a niche in the larger asset management space. Competition is strong, but these new gen companies are trying to change the rules of engagement. Instead of betting on alpha funds, they are going after passive investments. Much has been said about sovereign green bond trading at GIFT City, however doubts remained as settlements at GIFT City are USD denominated whereas green bonds are rupee denominated. This story is an attempt to resolve some of those doubts. Investors may need to pay banks a #conversionfee to settle transactions of the government’s #greenbonds at exchanges in IFSC of #GIFTCity, according to Hetal Kotak, NSE International Exchange’s head of listings. In the settlement mechanism currently being discussed by the RBI, exchanges, and clearing houses, investors will pay for green bonds in dollars through a banking unit in the IFSC. These banking units will then enter a trade on the exchange where the green bond is listed in foreign currency terms. The exchange's clearing corporation will handle any conversion between the dollar and the rupee, including secondary market trades between an Indian and foreign entity, and any refunds, Kotak said, with investors having to pay a fee to banks for the conversion.
