In today's newsletter we have a look at a Transaction Video on Demand (TVOD) player - BookMyShow Stream. Even though they have not grabbed any major headlines, it seems there is a small but growing market for online movie rentals in India, especially for "exclusive" titles (available on bookmyshow only for a limited time) that users might have missed in the theaters. Will they succeed? Time will tell, however there seems to be a market for different kind of players for sure - Also Streaming is not bookmyshow's core business and as in person event revenues have come back with a bang, the company has an opportunity to push different business models as part of their streaming endeavor to build streaming, ticketing and events as three strong pillars. The season finale of my podcast Salaried Talks is here. "The Chair Incident” made Amazon what it is today. Read below to know the incredible story👇 It was the late 1990s, and Amazon was still in its infancy. Jeff Bezos was heavily involved in the day-to-day operations, often reading customer emails and personally addressing their concerns. One such email came from a disgruntled customer who had received a broken chair. The customer, understandably upset, wrote a detailed complaint about the poor condition of the chair upon arrival and expressed disappointment with Amazon's quality control. For many CEOs, delegating such issues to the customer service department would have been the norm. But Bezos saw this as an opportunity to demonstrate Amazon's commitment to its customers. He believed that every customer interaction was a chance to improve and build trust. Instead of forwarding the email to customer service, Bezos decided to handle the issue personally. He contacted the customer directly, apologizing for the inconvenience and assuring them that Amazon would make it right. But he didn't stop there. Bezos took a bold step that few executives would consider. He arranged for a new chair to be delivered and personally ensured its quality. Then, Bezos himself drove to the customer's house to deliver the replacement chair. He wanted to make sure the customer felt valued and to show that Amazon was willing to go above and beyond to rectify mistakes. When Bezos arrived at the customer's home, the surprise and gratitude were palpable. The customer couldn't believe that the CEO of Amazon had taken the time to personally deliver the new chair. Bezos took the time to talk to the customer, listen to their concerns, and assure them that Amazon was dedicated to providing the best possible service. The Chair Incident reinforced the importance of customer obsession at Amazon. 5 Highlights from the Rakuten Product Conference 2024. Over the last 2 days, I had the opportunity to attend the conference and gain valuable insights from industry professionals on Enterprise SaaS and Artificial Intelligence. Here are some highlights. 1. Sunil Gopinath from Rakuten India, set the tone with specifics on how Enterprise SaaS is evolving and how automation and AI can be cornerstones for building a customer-centric, long-term growth strategy. 2. Vani Kola from Kalaari Capital, shared her perspectives on India's growth store and how Enterprise AI and SaaS create new opportunities. Her insights on the flow of capital and key metrics to master were invaluable. If there's a recording of this session, it's a must-watch for everyone. 3. Ravi Vijayaraghavan from Flipkart, shared how e-commerce is leveraging generative AI. Seeing how large e-commerce players are at the forefront of tech adoption, creativity and result-driven analytics is amazing. I'm definitely working on the framework he shared and explained. 4. Ranjani Mani from Microsoft, shared how to make Gen-AI adoption a reality across Enterprises. The session was filled with practical examples, use cases and a pragmatic approach. For companies new to the domain, the session was an eye-opener and for companies aiming at increasing their level of competitiveness by leveraging AI, this would have been an ideal opportunity to listen in to the best in the business. 5. Gautam Bhargava from Krutrim, shared an amazing highlight on how Indic languages are paving the way for a cohesive and more advanced multilingual AI stack. It's amazing to listen to the advancements and the possibilities with multilingual AI and how it would create a more inclusive AI world. The conference had amazing speakers, informative panel discussions and a goldmine of insights shared across the two days. Kudos to the Rakuten team for the success of the event. Had a brilliant conversation with Nuha Bubere from The Ken on how old guards (Flipkart + Amazon) are bringing on the fight to QCs (blinkit + Zepto + Instamart). Following are some pointers that we discussed: 1. Right to win lies with the ones who are able to crack frequency of purchase for the user- thus Fruits & Vegetables + grocery purchase is key for a right to win. Something that QCs are acing right now. 2. For profitability and increasing ASP- categories like electronics, mobiles and large appliances are key for success in the long run. With years of expertise built by the old guards- they have the best of the selection on them right now and will try to guard top selling models from opening up across all channels. Might play aggressive on margin asks on such models to shield marketshare. 3. Old guards also have access to affordability constructs like EMI, exchange constructs for electronics and smartphones, which if unlocked for their QC play, will ensure consumer stickiness given that Indian consumers tend to be net effective price sensitive. 4. In terms of operations- old guards are more seamless- they replicate inventories across their dark stores from the ones that brand/ seller supply to already established warehouses. In contrast- new QC channels are more tuned towards grocery forward replenishment models- which require deliveries every 3-5 days, while electronics are more tuned towards bulk deliveries to ecommerce warehouses. Making the current model of QCs operationally unfeasible for most scaled brands. 5. Large appliances in a quick commerce model is still a puzzle. Single unit delivery for washers, ACs, or TVs would come at huge supply chain costs, and even if deliveries happen within 10 minutes to 4 hours window, can brands enable same day installations? With increasing pressures of unsold inventories and reducing margins in hardware- innovation costs would be tough to figure out. But who had imagined Quick commerce becoming the new age Ecommerce war?
