We now live in a world where every device is a television TV is just another name for video based on the device. Earlier the device was the sole portal. Now , video is available across screens and devices. The world of schedule and appointment viewing has withered away except in sports. Couch potatoes are yielding to active hunters. As, Video is TV And since , Digital is now video Hence, TV is digital And indeed, Digital is TV Frankly , video is managing the transition way better than print or music. Reality is that all video will be via streaming. But Ad free, subscriber paid content is also a utopia. The OTT platforms see this. The model can’t be viable catering to a niche. Hence the challenge is not for TV to become say, a Netflix but for Netflix to become more of TV. Eventually the world will see a 50:50 split between subscriptions and advertising. Of the $ 1 trillion revenue global advertising last year, fully $ 700 billion is digital. The picture is quite clear ! The picture is quite clear !

My article in Economic Times, Brand Equity 27-6-2024 “A fundamental drift happened from news to narrative, between the moral compulsion of telling the truth and asking questions to the pressing need for storytelling and holding the public’s attention. Digital media defaulted to the belief that information was the currency and the algorithm was the arbiter of choice. The new medium could provide information faster, cheaper, and with greater individual specificity. Digital media was eminently well suited for news not only because of its speed, but because digital media was all betting on the revenues to come; it had no revenues when it began. Cheaper the better. Digital news is a kind of information arbitrage: how cheaply can one acquire it, and what fraction of a premium will advertisers pay for it? Count the number of digital access live phones and you will begin to get the answer. The news genre is naturally fit for digital consumption. News is reality in the instant. It is time-sensitive information, a complicated and fragile value proposition. For one thing, its value quickly degrades in seconds. The next day, last man standing reportage is no longer valuable. Everyone wants a prompt in the instant. Where is original content, not to mention actually good content, or crafted content? As this was happening, the demographics also changed. Nearly 400 million Indians are less than 20 years of age and this is the only reality they have encountered. An abundance of options is par for the course.”

TV is compelled to provide a wider selection in its program buffet. But, general information is not news. Its value depends on scarcity. What everybody knows isn’t news; if the news is available everywhere, then you hardly do a useful or valuable job by repeating it. Hence YouTube influencers, experts, advocates—call them as you like— bring scoops and gossip, whereas TV reporters are becoming more and more more monochromatic. TV squandered its distinction. A long history of dependability, unique authority, defined character and refinement and exclusivity that are hard to establish overnight were deemed to be unreliable profit drivers. Noisy drama and deliberate crisis creation were relied upon. To make a mountain of a molehill became top qualification. A sensible evaluation would have said this approach was dicey as a business proposition, because the said news didn’t create its own value, but depended on the circumstance that surrounded it. However, it came to be this way. Naturally, this led to the impulse is to resist it, to skim over it, or to be distracted. Is that what happened in the 2024 election rating result? Did digital steal the thunder? Were folks existing in their respective echo chambers with a finite population? Did TV lose its status once and for all or is this more proof that algorithms can create not just an orderly information world, but one so personally compelling that information becomes a highly curated, contextualized, even dramatic experience? We shall know in the times to come. Keep track of the news!

Women empowerment opportunities in automotive sector! MG Motor India (MGMI) was launched in 2017 at Halol, Gujarat, India, a 100-year-old brand (1924-2024) had opened numerous diversification opportunities for women empowerment. Significantly, the company had achieved a workforce gender diversity of 37%, which was the highest in auto industry, while it planned for reaching 50% diversity. Historically, women had been severely marginalised in the auto sector and restricted to working in office and scarcely in leadership positions. Meanwhile, MGMI in sync with its gender diversity commitment introduced the 'Drive Her Back' initiative in 2019 which aimed to reinforce diversity and inclusion for creating an equitable automotive workplace across verticals. Besides, this revival campaign also enriched the talent pipeline. Women leaders at the company were boosting efficiency in multiple domains like manufacturing, marketing, communications, roadside assistance, human resources, and finance. Peter Drucker , voted as the Management thinker of the 21st century , once said “ THE CUSTOMER RARELY BUYS what the business thinks it sells him” . Do All Brands really know what they are selling to the consumer (or the customer in case of a B2B ? ) And to do this , the Brand custodians must understand it’s CORE PURPOSE . some examples ( not the co. version ) : PAMPERS exists to help mothers with their babies all round development , APPLE enables it’s users with creativity and self - expression , JOHN DEERE is about making a difference to farmers lives , MASTERCARD makes lives simpler and more flexible , DIESEL exists to ensure endless imagination and possibilities in style , RED BULL exists to energize the world . And to understand the Brand core purpose , it’s important to understand the CORE DRIVER behind the consumer / customer’s behaviour. Therefore , understanding the core driver of the customer’s behaviour leads to gaining deep insights leading to defining the Brand CORE PURPOSE

To get more foot-falls, should you focus on stealing customers from competitors or expanding the overall tea-drinking population? Penetration metrics hold the answer. They guide your growth strategy and help you monitor success. Penetration measures how well a brand or category connects with its audience. It’s the ratio of people who’ve purchased a specific brand or product category at least once during a given period, divided by the total relevant market population. 1. Market Penetration (%) = (Customers who bought Category Product) / (Total Population) 2. Brand Penetration (%) = (Customers who bought Brand) / (Total Population) 3. Penetration Share (%) = (Customers who bought Brand) / (Customers who bought Category Product) Market Size in this context would be Mumbai’s tea-loving population say 10,000 people Chai Wala customers say, 500 people (they can’t resist that masala chai!)
