M&A and turnaround of healthcare facilities!   Took the Masterclass on 28 September.   India is the fastest growing major economy. It is the fifth largest economy and the third largest in terms of PPP. Healthcare industry is one of the biggest employers employing ~7.5 million people. Current size of the healthcare industry is $372 billion and is expected to increase to $638 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 16-17%. India still spends less than 5% of its GDP on healthcare, as against the OECD countries 8-10% and the US a whopping 20%.   Most legacy providers are consolidating aggressively and almost 30000 crores has been invested over the last 4 years with some mega deals have also been signed, powered by PE firms. Part of this investment could be used to extend delivery to Tier2/3 towns wherein the care delivery remains abysmal.   Integration of the newly acquired healthcare facilities (brownfield projects) becomes paramount for the providers/ PE firms to cerate value for their stakeholders. It entails design and execution of a prudent comprehensive business strategy.   Greenfield healthcare projects present a unique challenge to operationalize and turn profitable since all expenses are front loaded. In the absence of comprehensive strategy, turnaround is well-nigh impossible.   I’ve brought out key highlights of the same during my masterclass. Expansion of ESIC Hospitals to Broaden Health Coverage Ayurveda and Beyond: The Expansion of India’s First All India Institute of Ayurveda A Milestone in India’s Journey Towards Universal Healthcare The launch of these projects marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards achieving universal healthcare. The combined focus on increasing healthcare coverage for senior citizens, boosting local manufacturing, enhancing healthcare delivery through technological advancements, expanding hospital infrastructure, and promoting traditional medicine highlights the government’s comprehensive approach to healthcare. These projects are not only a testament to India’s healthcare ambitions but also to the potential of a self-reliant healthcare ecosystem capable of serving every citizen, regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic location. Exploring the potential of telemedicine for improved primary healthcare in India: a comprehensive review Introduction With a significant shortage of healthcare providers in primary care, particularly in rural regions, telemedicine offers a promising solution to bridge this gap in India, enhancing access to healthcare services.1 Telemedicine is ideally suited to overcome the challenges of healthcare delivery in these areas, especially for primary care settings.2 Primary care physicians, as frontline healthcare providers, offer initial and continuous medical care for patients across all ages. They serve as the first point of contact for medical treatment, diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, managing chronic diseases, and promoting preventive health practices. While research on the effectiveness of telemedicine interventions in India, especially in rural and remote locations, remains sparse,3,4 the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored telemedicine’s capacity to deliver primary care services effectively while enforcing social distancing and minimizing the risk of infection.5 What is lacking is a bird’s eye overview of how telemedicine has been used in primary care research in India.6–8 Furthermore, it is essential to delineate the barriers to telemedicine implementation and to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with telemedicine in primary healthcare lancet

It's truly impressive what Sequoia and Viswanathan Santhanagopalan has achieved and I have no doubt great things awaits. It's mind blowing how things have advanced - from being an "independent" installing used systems to now developing cutting edge 128-slice technology and MRIs of own design. It’s not only remarkably bold; it embodies a story of genuine dedication, strong conviction, and a deep work ethic, reflecting the determination that is so deeply rooted in Indian culture. Congratulations my friend, I wish you great success! Still, as this is just a small pice of a much bigger puzzle, no roses without thorns. Being a dedicated globalist it worries me, that it's also a sign of a political trend towards a system increasingly based on a protectionist agenda, "made in India", MAGA, and the like. It always ends with tariffs, quotas, trade barriers. That's not development, it's the opposite. If we want a true democratization of modern diagnostics we need more companies reinventing our industry combined with LESS protectionism. We need less trade barriers, we need less locked systems and we first of all need the the right to repair.

We anticipate a #budget that fortifies the #healthcare foundation of our country, as a strong and resilient healthcare ecosystem is a critical driver of India’s economic growth. The Union Budget for 2023-24 allocated INR 89,155 crore to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a nearly 3.4 percent increase from INR 86,200 crore in FY 2022-23. For the upcoming budget, it’s essential to prioritize a strategy that combines Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Research and Development (R&D), and enhanced funding for rural healthcare infrastructure in India. Encouraging #PPP models will help leverage private sector expertise to improve #publichealth services. Allocating a significant portion of the budget to R&D in healthcare is crucial for addressing local health challenges with innovative solutions. Additionally, increasing funding for the development and upgrading of healthcare facilities in rural areas is vital to ensure equitable access to healthcare. The Eldercare sector is ready for disruption but there are several challenges that we, as entrepreneurs, should turn into opportunities. The current Taxation regime for Homecare and Eldercare makes the services prohibitively expensive. It hinders the consolidation and formation of an organized sector in this area. A country like India with a growing elderly population needs to bring healthcare to home. The government should not look at this sector as a source of revenue for the government. A lot still needs to be done in Remote Health Monitoring and Management and Emergency Response Management to make home health care a compelling proposition for our elders and loved ones. We need to improve training and skill development infrastructure and build a robust supply chain for efficient home health care administration.
