From near bankruptcy to one of India’s hottest consumer brands. Meet Wakefit, a brand launched by Chaitanya Ramalingegowda and Ankit Garg in 2015. Wakefit aims to improve sleep health with sleep-efficient products. The challenge like any other business was to capture attention & retain customers. But despite the pandemic hitting the business hard, how did Wakefit’s marketing become a success? → Wakefit understood the customers’ pain points, focused on educating them about sleep, and empowered them to research and decide. → They launched the Sleep Internship campaign, where interns will sleep 9 hours a night for 100 days on a Wakefit mattress and earn Rs. 1 Lakh as an internship stipend. → Wakefit focused on D2C sales and offered high-quality products at competitive prices. This attracted cost-conscious customers who want quality products within their budget. → Wakefit's presence across digital platforms helped them reach a wider audience. Their engaging and relatable content resonated and drove growth. While traffic was good with these strategies, new users and re-engagement for the existing users were not up to the mark. That's when they implemented the 3-point strategy & used an engagement platform, MoEngage, to enhance engagement. The 3-point strategy has three digital goals: 1️⃣ Acquiring new customers Wakefit launched survey campaigns and segmented visitors into buyers and non-buyers with MoEngage’s Custom Segmentation feature. Non-buyers received product-focused notifications through on-site messaging, emails, and push alerts. Using a content-first approach, buyers received product-related messages mostly through emails. 2️⃣ Re-engaging with existing users After a 100-day wait post-purchase, Wakefit re-engaged with existing customers, based on their purchase history and wishlist. It created campaigns to drive customers to the next purchase. Users who searched but didn’t buy were prompted to complete the purchase. 3️⃣ Product awareness Using a content-first approach, Wakefit launched targeted email campaigns to both buyers and non-buyers, highlighting sleep tips, home decor ideas, and product-line awareness. The continuous and relevant communication helped them reach more customers and improve digital growth. The results were impressive: ↳ 80% adoption rate ↳ Overall daily order volume jumped by over 40% ↳ On-site messaging led to a 20% conversion rate ↳ Over 4M personalized emails were sent with an average CTR of 11.79% ↳ Push notifications reached 700k users with a delivery rate exceeding industry benchmarks Key takeaway? Isn’t it amazing how start-ups’/ companies’ focus have dramatically shifted to profitability? 😯 Just in the last decade era (10-15 years back), companies like Amazon/ Flipkart, Ola/Uber, BYJU'S’s, OYO and WeWork were laser-focused on growth - revenues over everything.
 It was all about grabbing market share, even if it meant burning through cash. 💸 Today, most of them are still loss-making. But companies in the last 5-10 years? We’re seeing a shift.
 Newer players (or the ones that became prominent recently) like Meesho, Zepto, Urban Company, and PW (PhysicsWallah) are taking a different path.
 They’re not just chasing scale— most of them actually aiming and winning profitability (at least EBITDA-positive). 📊
 Sustainability is finally becoming as important as growth. Of course, it’s not a one-size-fits-all trend.
Companies like Ola Electric are loss making, while Zerodha (last decade era) have consistently made profits. But it’s fascinating to see this evolution of new tech/ business model focus to profitability.

Kenko Health: From Skyrocketing Growth to Sudden Shutdown Kenko Health’s story was one many startups dream of—rapid growth, big-name investors, and a solution that promised to transform healthcare access. But in a flash, they’ve gone from a company with ₹85 crore in revenue to shutting down operations. What happened? Well, picture this: You’re climbing Everest. You’ve got a great climbing team, amazing resources, and you’ve trained hard. You have got a good chunk of international trainers who have been helping you get there and the local sherpas who are going to provide you with all the necessary equipment to reach the summit. The summit is in sight, but then the sherpas wants the climbing team to be mostly domestic leading to distress among the international trainers who have been helping you reach there. They can't turn their backs now and go back since they are equally invested in making the summit happen. Local Sherpas= Domestic regulator who gives out the coveted Insurance License (summit) International Trainers/ Team Members= Foreign Investors Kenko grew revenue 17x in one year, rising from ₹5 crore in FY22 to ₹85 crore in FY23. Impressive, right? Yet, despite their successes, they stumbled on a critical hurdle: securing an insurance license from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI). We all saw the potential. With Lightrock, Peak XV Partners (Sequoia Capital), BEENEXT backing Kenko, the startup seemed destined for greatness. But behind the scenes, things weren’t as perfect. Kenko’s quasi-insurance model worked brilliantly at first, providing affordable subscription health plans. But when it came to the regulatory complexities of acquiring that golden insurance license, things fell apart. They had the customers, the revenue, and the drive, but when the insurance goal became unreachable, the air thinned out. They even had investors lined up for a $27m Series B round—money that would have given them the capital cushion to survive. But then, to receive the insurance license, there were problems. The regulator wanted domestic investors to lead the charge. This, of course, caused a massive restructuring headache. Suddenly, the founders were caught between a rock and a hard place—international VCs on one side, domestic regulatory requirements on the other. And then, the final nail in the coffin—Kenko ran out of money. Even though the founders personally infused ₹9cr to keep the ship afloat, it wasn’t enough. By early 2024, employees weren’t getting paid, debts were mounting, and Kenko’s shutdown was all but inevitable. But this isn’t just about Kenko. It’s a case study on how regulatory hurdles can undo even the most promising companies in the startup ecosystem. Top News of the Week in Indian Startup Ecosystem: 1. The week saw the first mega funding deal materialise for an Indian startup in the form of healthtech unicorn Innovaccer’s $275 Mn Series F fundraise. 2. On the back of this, healthtech emerged as the most funded startup sector this week. Besides Innovaccer, BrainSinghtAI and Zoplar also raised $5 Mn and $3.4 Mn this week. 3. Fintech, cleantech and ecommerce all saw three funding deals materialise this week, leading to fresh capital infusion of $48.9 Mn, $14.2 Mn and $13.3 Mn respectively. 4.  After months of speculations, Ritesh Agarwal increased his stake in his startup OYO with a capital infusion of $65 Mn via his venture capital firm Redsprig Innovation Partners. This funding round made travel tech the second most funded sector this week. 5. This week’s most active investor was VC firm Alteria Capital, investing in BrainSightAI’s $5 Mn pre-Series A funding round and Pratilipi’s $1.2 Mn funding round. 6. Eyewear major Lenskart is said to have initiated talks with bankers for a $1 Bn IPO that could value it in the range of $7 Bn to $8 Bn. Acculi Labs Seed Round Closure:- Few Pointers and Answers to Question A. Are PAIO and The Current Round the Same/Different? i) PAIO-I, and PAIO-II(2021) were meant to do clinical trials and validate Lyfas Mobile Clinical Application, and build our diagnosis engine. ii) PAIO-III(Equity December 2022) round was raised to pioneer our home medicines and therapeutics. iii) A small angel round of 8L(2023 July) distributed over 10 months was raised from one of our PAIO investors for Genetic Integration in the Lyfas system, and for building a massive data ingestion system. iv) PAIO-4(Mar 2024) was raised to start unlocking the value potential of Lyfas and creating Lyfas Udyam. This is the current round, which is also building the PAIO-currency and PAIO-value economy for integrating small-scale entrepreneurial businesses into Lyfas Udyam. v) SABI HOLDING INDIA LIMITED and Acculi Labs Pvt Ltd have been working together in a Joint Venture(JV) for sustainable living, Organic Farming, Microbiome research, Medicinal Plants, Organic Fertilizer, and Urban farming over a 10Acre land(about ₹420 Cr net value) on the Delhi Jaipur highway since 2023. vi) A part of PAIO-4 money has also gone into the development of Lyra, the Lyfas conscious AI. vii) Therefore, PAIO is to experiment, research, gather data, and train Lyra and Lyfas systems, whereas JV is taking all the technology and processes to a a larger population, alongside integrating Agriculture into the project. viii)The seed round and all the other major investments are directed towards the purpose of JV and Lyra. JV, for the expansion, and Lyra, for eliminating humans from the decision. Therefore, the purpose of PAIO and JV Corpus are different, their accounting and auditing are different, and both will grow and walk simultaneously. B. Capital Structure i) Even though Acculi now has a diversified business and tech portfolio, each of the verticals and projects under the company already has individual finance, structure, flow, and integration endpoints. ii) Over a period of time, each of these entities will operate independently under independent management and also have independent valuation and trading. iii) Like Sabi, there will be other collaborators and partners over the period of time. iii) Acculi will remain to be a mother entity and holding company for the brands and businesses. Systems, processes, and macro-policies of the ecosystem would stay with Acculi. iv) Our PAIO investors will continue to hold a stake at the mother entity, as well as PAIO investment consultancy pvt. Ltd(where PAIO banking is developed). C. In the MedTech startup world, it's not just about creating high-quality medical devices. You also have to tackle challenges like mindset, funding, collaborations, resistance, and regulations. MedTech is a long-term industry, one should not expect quick wins in terms of revenue. Remember, we live in a society where health is not given that much priority until the condition is severe or evident. We need to change how people see MedTech startups in India. Otherwise, we might just become a social venture, and to me there's nothing wrong going this way as well. We start our journey with a ground level pain, and if we are able to cure that pain to save/improve/impact even a single life, our most of the jobs are done. #healthcare #startup #medtech #business

From Seed to Series B in less than 3 years Foxtale, an Indian D2C skincare brand, recently announced its $15M (Rs 125 Cr) Series B funding round. It raised $18M (Rs 150 Cr) in this round, but $3M out of this $18M were secondaries where existing shareholders sold their equity to new investors. The firm raised Rs 125 Cr ($12M) in fresh capital at a Rs 790 Cr ($96M) post-money valuation. This translates into a 12.5% dilution which is low for Series B rounds. The founders didn't have to dilute 20–25% equity because they got a high valuation. While the round size of Rs 125 Cr is average (neither large nor small) for a Series B startup in #India, the company's growth is spectacular. It was founded just 3 years ago in 2021. It raised its Seed of Rs 5.5 Cr in December 2021 and Rs 35 Cr Series A in June 2022. Skincare is a crowded category in India. Foxtale sells sunscreens and moisturisers where the competition from Indian and foreign brands is intense. So, how did Foxtale raise so much #money so quickly? The answer lies in Growth. VCs love fast-growing companies. Within 3 years, Foxtale's gross revenue run rate (Current Month's Revenue x 12) touched Rs 250 Cr. This gives us a valuation multiple of 2.7x which falls in the current market range of D2C valuations In India. Post-Money Valuation = Rs 790 Cr Fresh Capital Raised = Rs 125 Cr Pre-Money Valuation = 790 –125 = Rs 665 Cr Gross Revenue Run Rate = Rs 250 Cr Current Monthly Revenue = 250 / 12 = Rs 20Cr Valuation Multiple = 665 / 250 = 2.7 Its FY24 revenue was Rs 172Cr, more than 12 times its FY23 revenue. While the company burnt a lot of capital to achieve this, a Rs 172Cr revenue in its third financial year and Rs 20 Cr monthly revenue within 3 years is excellent #growth. The management also claims it's closer to EBITDA profitability, but I don't usually read too much into such claims because all #founders claim it. Nevertheless, the investors must be fine with the current burn to invest more money at an attractive valuation. Foxtale's high retention rate (More than 50% of orders are from existing customers) and a high share of website sales (More than 50%) convinced the investors that it's a good company to back. Most D2C brands rely on marketplaces for a majority of their sales. I agree with their hypothesis because skincare and body care are a crowded category in India. Dozens of #startups and FMCG companies sell hundreds of products. It's challenging for a new D2C brand to grow quickly even through cash burn. IMO, Foxtale has found its PMF for its existing products (Sunscreem and Moisturiser) in its current market. Its growth will depend upon how well it takes its existing products to newer markets and sells new products (Body care). It seems like an interesting company to follow. P.S.
