But, RoI on fine tuned models is not proven so decide when is the right time and for what customers you will offer fine tuned models. 5. Jobs-to-be-done framework is a powerful tool for product managers to carry out user research and understand what needs to be built. It helps PMs understand the needs of the users and gives them clarity on 1. Why are users hiring (or using) a particular product, basically the thought process behind selecting a product? 2. What all jobs (or tasks) are users doing from a particular product? Harvard Business School marketing professor Theodore Levitt said, “People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole!” Clayton Christensen says, “People buy products and services to get a job done”. This guide unveils the magic of user stories, equipping you to write clear, concise narratives by providing a clear framework & practical examples. What are User Stories & Why Do They Matter? Imagine a user story as a to-do list item but with a user-centric twist. It describes what a specific user type wants to achieve with your product & the desired outcome they seek. Crafting Clear and Concise User Stories Below is a three-part formula you can follow: • Who: Identify the user type (e.g. fitness enthusiast). • What: Describe the user's desired action (track daily calorie intake). • Why: Explain the benefit for the user (make informed decisions about diet). Here's an example to illustrate this: "As a fitness enthusiast, I want to track my daily calorie intake So That I can make informed decisions about my diet." Notice how clear, user-centric & outcome-oriented this statement is1 Building a Collaborative Foundation with Product Discovery Forget the idea of a lone product manager with brilliant ideas! User stories are born from collaboration, stemming from a process called "Product Discovery." This is where the team works together to uncover user needs, brainstorm solutions & address potential roadblocks before diving into development. The 3C's: Your User Story Toolkit The 3C's provide a powerful framework for writing effective user stories: 1) Card: Capture the story essence digitally. 2) Conversation: Discuss the user story's purpose with the team.  3) Confirmation: Define clear acceptance criteria, a checklist that guarantees the story is "done". The INVEST Model: Crafting Well-Structured User Stories INVEST is an acronym that captures the essential qualities of a great user story: 1) Independent: Each story should be self-contained, not reliant on others. 2) Negotiable: The details can be discussed & refined with your team. 3) Valuable: The story delivers clear value to the user. 4) Estimable: The effort required to complete the story can be reasonably assessed. 5) Small: User stories should be achievable within a single development iteration (typically 2-4 weeks). 6) Testable: There are clear criteria to determine if the story has been successfully implemented. RICE Framework for prioritization RICE is a powerful framework to help product managers evaluate and rank potential projects based on four factors: Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort. It provides a single priority score for each project which makes it easy for PMs to identify the projects they should pick. Understanding the RICE Framework: ➡ Reach Estimates the number of people affected by the initiative. Usually measured in absolute user count. Example: A new mobile app feature expected to reach 10,000 users per month. ➡Impact Measures how much the initiative will affect the users. Usually measured from a scale of 1-3 with 3 being highest impact and 1 being lowest impact. Example: A feature that will significantly boost user engagement (High Impact). ➡Confidence Assesses the certainty of the estimates and assumptions. Usually measured in probabilistic terms - 80% or 0.8. Example: Based on data and user research, confidence is 80%. ➡Effort Evaluates the total resources required to complete the initiative. Usually measured in man-days or man-months depending on the scale. Example: A project requiring 4 person-months of work. 📈 Calculation of RICE Score RICE Score = (Reach x Impact x Confidence) / Effort ✅ Pros of the RICE Framework [1] Quantitative evaluation: Provides a clear and numerical basis for comparing different initiatives. Many times in my PM career, my teams were executing at full capacity, as per the aligned product startegy and also building backwards from customer needs found during user research convos. But the products failed to deliver the impact in first go and required few iterations to hit expected success metrics. Reflecting back, the success was not denied due to execution, but due to lack of understanding of all parameters which lead to success in any complex initiative. Navigating such complex situations requires understanding the issue and then communicating the same with others in team to create a shared understanding of what's wrong. In such cases Dr. Mary Lippitt's Model helps understand what's really happening in an initiative. The model essentially says, there are 5 inputs to manage any complex change and if any of the 5 inputs is missing the team will struggle. Go through the screenshot to identify individual scenarios and the corresponding team reality. Once you understand the parameter absent in your relevant context, fix it proactively to increase your odds of success. From experience, defining right “ Incentives” for teams with conflicting priorities is the toughest and "Vision" and "Skills" are most difficult to change in short term and hence Product Managers typically tweak the other 3 parameters to achieve success. #productmanagement
