Panel Discussion: Utilizing Digital Innovations for Citizen Engagement and Inclusive Development - Transformative Impact of AI Sanjay Shripatrao Katkar, IAS, Commissioner and Administrator, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, Government of Maharashtra (GoM) 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 - Maharashtra has unique urban challenges, with 60% of its population living in urban areas, and 40% concentrated in three regions, including the PMR. - One of the major issues globally is waste management, and in Mira-Bhayandar, we’ve implemented a digital waste management system addressing collection, transportation, and processing. We’ve digitized 282,000 households, achieving an 85% waste segregation rate. Through an app, we track waste segregation from source to disposal, with real-time alerts for unsegregated waste and automated civic actions. - We’ve developed six organic waste management plants to convert waste into biogas and power, generating revenue in the process. Our transportation system includes GPS-enabled tracking and automated fines for delays, ensuring efficiency. - For restaurant waste, we trained staff at 360 establishments, implemented a streamlined collection process, and now use the waste for biogas generation. Additionally, we’ve introduced a coconut waste management system, covering 130 vendors. This interview of Mr. C. Sivasankaran, one of India's finest thinkers and ace businessmen, by Mr. Raj Shamani, one of my favourite YouTubers, is a great learning resource for all of us. I am thankful to both of them for great interview. I was one of the beneficiaries/ user of Mr. Sivasankaran's Aircel telecom service provider's service. Aircel's very small denomination recharge voucher of Rs.14 for 3 days unlimited internet was poor man's cow to me as we didn't have today's cost effective mobile combo plans at that time. I used to recharge with Rs.14 voucher for unlimited internet, most importantly for downloading big softwares from official websites of Microsoft, Oracle, etc. But unfortunately, Mr. Sankaran's one mistake put my old man's cow to an end. He has discussed that issue here. Apart from that, there are many lessons we can learn from this interview. I am sure that Mr. Sivasankaran's new venture of bio hacking or wellness will make a road to his comeback. All the best to him. Ace thinkers never stop their journeys and they continue to benefit large masses. And this is happening with Mr. C. Sivasankaran too.

On the final day of inSIG 2024 at IIM Bangalore, I heard Dhruv Dhody's insightful talk on "Internet Standards and RFCs: Processes and the Present Status." One concept that caught my attention was carbon routing or carbon-aware routing. This innovative strategy focuses on reducing the carbon footprint of data transmission by selecting network paths based on carbon emissions alongside traditional factors like speed and reliability. While carbon-aware routing offers great promise in promoting sustainability, it also presents certain challenges. On the positive side, it can significantly reduce environmental impact and optimise energy use across the internet. However, trade-offs may include potentially slower data transmission and the complexity of implementing dynamic routing algorithms at scale. A more holistic approach—balancing carbon efficiency with network performance—could drive further adoption of this concept and advances in clean energy integration for data centres. Startups have to start at the bottom to get to 100 mln people to be gainfully self employed, it’s not just tech but technique , education but expirience in ways of doing things better ..agri and food , trade and logistics or transport can offer millions of opportunities .. Start ups at 6 lac + villages 1000s of towns with hyperlocal businesses would be next best thing solve unemployment problems ..
