I’m going in for some movie news again… PVR Inox, India’s largest multiplex chain, says that the luxury format will account for 20% of its screen inventory in the coming months, a bump from the 15% it is right now. Ever since we could find all sorts of content available to us at home, Theater chains are betting on upping the luxury segment for aspiring Indians who need an extra push to leave their homes. Here’s why… 🎥 The luxury segment (Insignia, Luxe, IMAX, 4DX) has been very resilient in the face of the underperformance of films because it offers an experience beyond the film itself. 🎥 The luxury segment is outperforming regular screens in terms of revenue generation. Affluent customers are paying top rupees (in some cases, up to Rs. 2500) for the experience, not including food and beverage. 🎥 Even in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, customers have started opting for recliner seats and special services. What does this mean? 🚀 Cinema chains will be upping the up-market experience, combining lounge areas, bars, live continental kitchens with plush seating, premium sound, and projection. 🚀 The movie itself will no longer be the most important part of the experience, so bad movies will still have theatrical releases, and cinema chains can continue to generate income from a customer loyal to the luxury experience. 🚀 Regular tickets will get more expensive, leaving a huge chunk of the population out of cinemas. This last point is saddening. I wish that struggling single-screen cinemas could be supported by a state-funded program so that regular people can still go watch a movie if they want to in the future. Thoughts on how to solve this?
