Comparison between High Level Synthesis and Verilog/VHDL Solutions 🔹High Level Synthesis: ➡️ Easier implementation and faster development ➡️ Allows us to direct focus on algorithms, not hardware constraints ➡️ Much Faster time to market and prototyping ➡️ Efficiency with directives like 'pragma' that allow for pipelining, loop unrolling, flattening etc. 🔹Verilog/VHDL: ➡️ Detailed control over hardware specifics ➡️ Established practice for robust implementations ➡️ Better control for performance optimization An excellent food for thought my supervisor gave me that according to Moore's Law, the number of transistors on a microchip doubles approximately every two years, leading to exponential growth in computing power and available resources. Given this rapid advancement, the efficiency and control offered by traditional methods like Verilog/VHDL are becoming less critical. Instead, focusing on HLS solutions, which streamline development and innovation, is a smarter choice. I can share my experience based in India. As per my understanding : 1: There will be high demand for VLSI background students or working professionals in the next five years due to semiconductor initiative. 2: Once Indian semiconductor companies start manufacturing devices . There will be increased demand for embedded system background folks in validation. 3: Semiconductor devices will be used for building embedded system platforms. It will increase the demand of hardware designers and firmware developers. 4: For each silicon device there will be multiple hardware platforms. For each hardware platform, there will be multiple embedded application software opportunities. So demand for embedded application software folks will always increase. 5: Will AI impact embedded software jobs ? I think it will help embedded software folks. Code generating tools exist for more than a decade and that didn't impact embedded software developers. 🚀 Day 79/100: Moore FSM Sequence Detector for "1100"! Today, I implemented a Moore FSM to detect the non-overlapping sequence "1100". It uses a set of states to track the input bits, transitioning from IDLE to detecting the complete sequence. If the sequence is found, the FSM outputs a high signal! Hi Folks, Do you know about HDLBits ? & created why ? HDLBits is a collection of digital circuit design exercises and an online judge for learning digital logic using the Verilog hardware description language. Most of the problems on HDLBits are designed to be short problems with short solutions. We compile and test your code and compare it to our reference solution to give immediate feedback on correctness, often with debugging information. Like any other language (programming, hardware design, or a human language), fluency in a hardware description language can be acquired much more efficiently by practice than if done solely through lectures and studying textbooks. But getting practice is hard when there is a steep initial learning curve and a lack of feedback. One day, I realized that I could address both of these problems by building an online tool, and that this tool could be simple enough to be hacked together in a weekend. So here we are. HDLBits was created by Henry Wong, who spent 7 years as a teaching assistant in digital logic and computer organization (ECE243, ECE253, and ECE241) during his Ph.D. studies at the University of Toronto. Firstly, Verilog is HDL(Hardware Descriptive Language) programming language use for designing electronics system and also as embedded system. Some of the various operators in Verilog are: 1) Arithmetic Operator. 2) Logical Operator. 3) Bitwise Operator. 4) Equality Operator. 5) Relational Operator. 6) Reduction Operator. 7) Shift Operator. Below are three which I be explaining further: --> Relational Operator -> This operator return a value of One(1) if the expression is true, and zero(0) if the expression is false . e.g, greater than(>), less than(<), less than or equal to(<=), greater than or equal to(>=). --> Reduction Operator -> This operator takes only one operand. what is an operand?, Am Operand in simple term, is the value which be calculated by the operations. Some Example of operation are "+", "-", "*", */*. Happy Morning Today Post is Physical Design: => What is Physical Design: -> Physical design means --->> netlist (.v ) converted into GDSII form(layout form) logical connectivity of cells converted into physical connectivity. During physical design, all design components are instantiated with their geometric representations. ->In other words, all macros, cells, gates, transistors, etc., with fixed shapes and sizes per fabrication layer, are assigned spatial locations (placement) and have appropriate routing connections (routing) completed in metal layers. Physical design directly impacts circuit performance, area, reliability, power, and manufacturing yield. =>Examples of these impacts are discussed below. 1. Performance: long routes have significantly longer signal delays. 2. Area: placing connected modules far apart results in larger and slower chips. 3. Reliability: A large number of vias can significantly reduce the reliability of the circuit. 4. Power: transistors with smaller gate lengths achieve greater switching speeds at the cost of higher leakage current and manufacturing variability; larger transistors and longer wires result in greater dynamic power dissipation. 5. AHB (Advanced High-performance Bus) 1.Purpose: - Designed for high-performance, high-bandwidth communication between high-speed components like CPUs, memory controllers, and DMA (Direct Memory Access). 2.Performance: - Supports high-speed data transfer with features like burst transfers and pipelined operations. 3.Architecture:   - Supports split and retry operations.   - Features a complex handshake mechanism for efficient data transfers. - Uses a multi-master, multi-slave architecture allowing multiple bus masters and slaves to communicate.    - Features pipelined operation, which allows overlapping of address and data phases to improve performance. 4.Clocking: - Operates at a higher clock frequency, suitable for high-speed data transfers. 5.Complexity: - More complex due to features like pipelining, burst transfers, and multiple masters. APB (Advanced Peripheral Bus) 1.Purpose: - Designed for low-power, low-bandwidth, and simple communication with peripherals such as UARTs, timers, and GPIOs. 2.Performance: - Lower performance, primarily handling simple and slower transactions without pipelining or burst transfers. as it focuses on reducing complexity and power consumption. 3.Architecture: - Simple, non-pipelined architecture with a single bus master and multiple slaves.    - Lacks advanced features like burst or split operations.   - Uses a straightforward handshake mechanism.    - Requires fewer signals and simpler control logic, making it easier to implement. 4.Clocking:   - Operates at a lower clock frequency, often derived from the AHB clock via a clock divider. 5.Complexity:   - Less complex, focusing on simplicity and ease of integration for low-speed peripherals. Choosing Between AHB and APB - AHB: Choose when you need high-speed communication between high-performance components. - APB: Choose for simple, low-speed peripherals where power consumption and simplicity are prioritized.

🌟 Verilog: Understanding Bit Size, Bit Portion, and Vector Concatenation in Digital Design 🚀 Today, I tackled a problem on HDLBits called Vector3, which involved the concept of vector concatenation. This concept plays a crucial role in combining multiple smaller vectors into a larger one, allowing for efficient data manipulation and streamlined design. 🔍 The mistake: Focusing solely on bit size and ignoring bit portion. ✅ The correct approach: Considering both bit size and bit portion together for accurate results. In addition, vector concatenation involves joining two or more vectors to form a single, larger vector. This operation is widely used in digital design to group signals together, manage buses, and create more complex data structures. 📌 Real-World Applications of Vector Concatenation: 1️⃣ Data Bus Design: Concatenating smaller signals to form a larger bus, which is essential in microprocessor communication. 2️⃣ Multiplexers (MUX): Combining multiple select lines or inputs into a larger vector for routing data. 3️⃣ Cryptography: In algorithms like AES, concatenating keys and data blocks to form a larger message block for encryption. 4️⃣ Signal Processing: Merging multiple data streams into a single vector for processing or storage in communication systems. After 7 attempts and a lot of head-scratching 🤔, I finally discovered that the mistake I was making was trying to access bits outside the valid range of the signal. I was considering only the total bit size, but the true solution came when I accounted for the specific subset of bits (bit portion) I needed to access. This journey taught me a valuable lesson on precision and understanding the relationship between bit size and bit portion when working with Verilog. One online platform to enhance lifestyle of hard working embedded system folks. I used to get job assistance queries of students from different training institutes. The common conversation: Student : Course completed from xxxxxxxx now I am looking for a job.. Me: How much fees you paid ? Student: 60K Me: We just charge GST(18%) of that for one month live sessions , life time access six phase developer kit course, mock-up interviews and one year support. Many students joined to increase their chance of employment and life time content access. We finished our October regular developer kit session yesterday. We had multiple live sessions for the October batch to discuss various topics : 1: ARM Assembly , Linker script, Startup code, Cortex M Programming and Memory model. 2: C basic and competitive level 3: ARM baremetal driver with various STM32 boards. There was a mix of Cortex M0+ and Cortex M4 boards. 4: ADC, UART, Systick, Clocking architecture, I2C, SPI etc. 5: We also discussed HAL and RTOS. 6: We had one workshop to discuss GitHub. We could complete everything because of live sessions, a proactive approach and coordination. Now we are starting the Nov batch tomorrow evening. 🚀Day 29 of the #100daysRTLChallenge 🚀. Today I worked on generating a sequence through "4 bit Asynchronous binary up counter ". Let's see what I learnt . In digital electronics, the 4-bit asynchronous binary down counter is a fundamental sequential circuit that counts down from 0 (binary 0000) to 15(binary 1111). Let's dive into its workings: 1. Structure : - It consists of four T-type flip-flops, each triggered by the falling edge of an external clock signal. - The universal clock input connected to the first flip-flop , the remaining flipflops get the clock signal from before the flop's output. - The T input of each flip-flop is connected to logic 1. 2. Operation: - At each clock tick, the counter increments by one. - As the clock pulses, the counter transitions through states: 0000, 0001, 0010, ..., 1110, 1111. 3. Applications: - Frequency Division: Asynchronous counters divide the clock frequency. - Digital Timers: Used for countdown applications. - Control Circuits: Enable specific actions after a certain count.
