Is Zomato’s new 'Food Rescue' feature really going to solve for food wastage or is it just a PR stunt?! Lets find out. While we can do some guesstimates based on available data, but only time will tell if it truly delivers on the expected impact, like: - How much food is actually saved? (Conversion rate from food rescue notification to order) - Are there second-order effects impacting BAU (Business as usual)? (Think: changes in cancellation rates, order trends, or AOV in areas with higher cancellations). While the idea sounds great, I’ve learned to stay focused on the problem, not the solution—that’s how we iterate faster and solve effectively. One thing I found curious: if Zomato tested this feature in smaller markets first, wouldn’t they have mentioned initial results in their PR? Since I don't have the test data, Lets proceed with some guesstimates: Some data we have(thanks to Perplexity) - 400K cancellation per month, 13K per day, 550 Pincodes of Operations, ~20 Million DAU - 24 cancellation per pincode - in 24 hours, 1 cancellation per pincode per hour - 36K active users per pincode The success of this idea depends on several “ifs”: - User proximity: Must be within 3 km of the cancellation point (~36K DAU per pincode, assuming 3 km per pincode). - Notification read/action: Within 10 minutes. India’s average notification read rate is ~8% within 3 hours; assuming active users read 3x faster (~24%), this becomes 1.3% for a 10-minute window (24%/18). - User hunger: 80% of orders happen during meal times, with a 50% chance the user is hungry, giving ~40% probability. - No other food plans: ~20% probability they haven’t made other arrangements. - Food preference match: ~25% probability, assuming 50% chance for veg/non-veg and 50% for cuisine. - Acceptance of deal price: ~50%. (These are some back of the envelop estimates, don't hold me for these ;)) Combining these, we might find ~5 users likely to convert. But even if the conversion rate is as low as 0.00001, that’s okay—since there’s only one item to sell. So, the odds look decent for saving the food :) ! As a product person, I know these kind of interesting ideas are often discussed in backlogs but shelved due to some “pessimism” or because they don’t seem to move any needle on growth or cost savings. Yet, hats off to the product manager who pushed this forward! Here the leadership who approved this probably knew that even if the metric value wasn’t huge, it would make for great PR. This is a great reminder that sometimes it’s worth building features that might not directly impact key metrics but are simply good for customers or society—and, as a bonus, they often bring some free PR. #ProductManagement #ProductImpact #Zomato #FoodRescue

Ah, the saga of URL whitelisting in India - a tale that would make even Kafka scratch his head and wonder if he'd accidentally written a new bureaucratic nightmare. The Great URL Whitelist Debacle In a move that surprised absolutely no one familiar with the Indian government's penchant for digital overreach, the Department of Telecommunications, India (DoT) decided to embark on a quixotic quest to implement URL whitelisting norms. The idea was simple: create a list of approved URLs that #telecom #operators would graciously allow their users to access. Because nothing says "digital empowerment" quite like treating the entire nation as if it were browsing the internet with parental controls. Telcos' Collective Facepalm Unsurprisingly, the telecom operators - those paragons of customer service and network reliability - found themselves in the unusual position of being the voice of reason. They argued that implementing such a system was about as practical as trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. The Cellular Operators Association of India - COAI , presumably after a long sigh and a stiff drink, pointed out that: 1. The sheer volume of URLs would make maintaining a whitelist a Herculean task. 2. The dynamic nature of the internet means new URLs pop up faster than government committees can convene. 3. The potential for service disruptions was higher than the number of potholes on Indian roads. The #Technical #Tango The telcos, in a rare display of unity that didn't involve price fixing, highlighted the technical challenges. They argued that implementing such a system would require "deep packet inspection" - a phrase that sounds about as pleasant as a root canal without anesthesia. Moreover, they pointed out that this brilliant plan would likely slow down internet speeds to a crawl, making dial-up modems look cutting-edge in comparison. One can almost imagine the government's response: "But think of all the time people will save not having to decide which websites to visit!" The #Privacy #Paradox In a twist of irony so delicious it could be served as dessert, the telcos expressed concerns about user privacy. Yes, the same entities that probably know more about our browsing habits than our own mothers suddenly developed a conscience about snooping on user data. It's like watching a fox worry about henhouse security. The Government's Masterplan The DoT, in its infinite wisdom, suggested that telcos could simply block all URLs except those on the whitelist. Because nothing screams " #DigitalIndia " quite like turning the internet into a walled garden smaller than a postage stamp. Irrespective of what the numbers say( BARC data for TV, OTT claimed data etc), the cost of building brand awareness is increasing year on year For example: 15 years back when there was no CTV, no Hotstar, no Jio Cinemas, a certain marquee cricket sponsorship on TV would have cost X crores and helped you reach every cricket viewer Today the same sponsorship on TV will cost approximately 4-5X(adjusted for claimed higher viewership and inflation ), but you don’t reach all cricket viewers because top 1-5 percent households at least in metroes have moved to CTV and OTT for sports consumption. So you need to spend approximately another 3X on those channels there to be able to reach all cricket viewers with same reach and frequency as 15 years back So what ideally should have been 3X( adjusted for inflation) is now 7-8X to reach the same consumer base Cricket was one example. Same is true for most things. KBC, Big Boss etc. TV ad expenditure has been growing for last 10 years and digital has also grown independently. While I don’t know the exact rate of growth of ad expenditure, definitely it has been much higher than GDP growth in last 10-15 years So, cost of reach has gone up and ad efficiency is definitely down Brands who are now starting their journey will have to spend much more than brands who started 20 years back And the biggest beneficiaries of this phenomena will be legacy brands with already high brand awareness

It’s no secret that this product has turned things around for Paytm, simplifying cashless transactions and reducing operational inefficiencies. But leave it to us Indians to find a Jugaad—an innovative hack—for every product. Yesterday, I came across a fascinating and unexpected use case that truly showcased the ingenuity of Indian businesses. I was visiting a friend who is a distributor of various food items. As soon as I entered his office, the Paytm Voicebox announced a payment amount. To my surprise, he quickly marked the amount on a piece of paper. Over the next few minutes, I observed this happening repeatedly. Curious, I asked him what he was doing and why. His explanation was pure desi genius: "This device has revolutionized the way we work. Earlier, our team would spend 3 hours in the market collecting payments from retailers, dealing with cash, and managing reconciliation. It was chaotic. But now, thanks to this voice box, there’s no need to handle cash, and our work is done in just 1 hour. Moreover, I can monitor everything—ensuring my team is working efficiently and avoiding time wastage. No mismatched records, no hassle. Just streamlined operations and less paperwork!" And then came the jugaad suggestion: "If Paytm could also announce the name of the party making the payment, it would make things even better. I wouldn’t need to open the app repeatedly to check which retailer has paid and how much. Real-time name announcements would save even more time and effort!" This conversation left me inspired. It’s amazing to see how a product designed with a specific purpose evolves to meet the diverse needs of its users. But more than that, it highlights the jugaad spirit of Indians—finding simple, creative solutions to optimize and get the best out of any tool! I hope this post catches the attention of the development teams at Paytm and PhonePe Voice Box. A disappointing experience with airtel: What happened to customer care? I've been an Airtel customer for years, but recently, the experience has taken a significant downturn. Despite promptly paying for a 6-month Airtel Wi-Fi plan, I've spent the last two weeks chasing a response from Airtel Digital. Frustratingly, no one seems to care. When I expressed my concerns on Twitter, pointing out that Jio’s superior customer service is a key reason it's outpacing airtel, something unexpected happened—Jio reached out to me, even without being tagged, while Airtel remained silent. This stark contrast highlights the decline in what was once a premium brand with excellent customer care. Now, it feels like Airtel has lost its way. You pay for a service, but it’s a struggle to get what you’ve paid for, let alone a refund. The customer service is a maze of bots, and the human touch is nowhere to be found. Even the person who onboarded me is no longer answering calls. P.S. If anyone has a solution for getting a refund from Airtel, I’m all ears. It’s disheartening to see a brand resort to such tactics.
