Two widely used technologies—gasifiers and thermopacks—play vital roles in energy generation and process heating. However, their emissions and regulatory requirements vary significantly, as outlined by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in India. This article dives into: 1. Emission parameters for gasifiers and thermopacks, 2. Prescribed norms by CPCB, and 3. The key differences between the two technologies. Gasifier Emissions A gasifier is a system that converts solid fuels like biomass, coal, or waste into producer gas through partial combustion. This process, being oxygen-limited, results in emissions that differ from conventional combustion systems. Typical Emissions from Gasifiers: Particulate Matter (PM): Generated during the combustion process, requiring filtration systems. Carbon Monoxide (CO): Higher due to incomplete combustion. Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): Relatively lower because of lower combustion temperatures. Sulfur Oxides (SOx): Dependent on the sulfur content in the fuel. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Tar and hydrocarbons can pose challenges. CPCB Prescribed Norms for Gasifiers: PM: <50 mg/Nm³ CO: <100 ppm NOx: <100 ppm SOx: <50 ppm (fuel-dependent) Thermopack Emissions Thermopacks, or thermal oil heaters, use direct combustion of fuels to heat thermal fluid for industrial applications. Unlike gasifiers, thermopacks operate with complete combustion. Typical Emissions from Thermopacks: Particulate Matter (PM): Higher with solid fuels or heavy oils. Carbon Monoxide (CO): Moderate, due to efficient combustion. Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): Higher because of high-temperature combustion. Sulfur Oxides (SOx): Significant when sulfur-rich fuels are used. Government's New EV Charging Infrastructure Policy for 2 and 3-Wheelers: A Significant Push for Green Mobility The Government of India has announced a robust new policy to support electric vehicle (EV) adoption by subsidizing up to 80% of the back-end infrastructure costs for setting up EV charging stations, specifically for two and three-wheelers. This marks a major development under the newly launched ₹10,900 crore PM E-Drive Scheme. The initiative aims to deploy 72,300 public charging stations (PCS) through 2,000 cities, which will cater predominantly to smaller EVs. Out of this, 48,400 chargers will be dedicated to two and three-wheelers, a crucial segment in India’s transport system, while 1,800 chargers will serve buses. The need to expand EV charging stations cannot be overstated. A well-developed charging network is key to driving widespread adoption of electric vehicles and alleviating range anxiety. Moreover, these stations are expected to operate primarily during the daytime, helping align EV charging demand with solar energy production. This strategy will help optimize solar generation, pushing the renewable energy agenda forward and easing pressure on the grid during peak morning and evening hours. The government's plan is also focused on promoting local manufacturing of EV chargers. From December 2024, there will be a minimum domestic value addition (DVA) requirement of 50% in the manufacturing of EV chargers. This step not only supports local industry but also reduces dependency on imports, making India's EV infrastructure more self-reliant and sustainable. The share of space cooling in India’s peak electricity load is expected to rise to 45% by 2050, with the biggest increase occurring in India. This is due to the increase in population, cooling systems penetration, and the hot climate. Globally, the capacity needed for space cooling will jump from 850 GW in 2016 to 3350 GW by 2050—an increase equal to the total generating capacity of the US, Europe, and India combined in 2016 (Source: IEA Report, 2018). Among all sectors where cooling is required, space cooling in buildings is most prevalent in India. Therefore, passive cooling strategies like night cross ventilation become important for addressing thermal comfort. Better ventilation rates lead to better thermal comfort and avoid the use of active cooling systems. Vayu Pravah is a Computational Fluid Dynamics tool for designing buildings with better ventilation. I had the opportunity to develop training modules at Greentech Knowledge Solutions (P) Ltd., which can help builders, engineers, town planners, architects, and consultants make early design decisions. The recent Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) auction for 1,000 MW solar energy combined with 4,000 MWh battery energy storage has set a new benchmark with a blended tariff of ₹3.53 per kWh. This achievement underscores the affordability and viability of solar-plus-storage solutions as a mainstream power source. Key Highlights: Tariff Structure: The tariff accounts for a mix of 40% daytime solar power at ₹2.5 per kWh and 60% nighttime battery-stored power at ₹5 per kWh, averaging out to ₹3.5 per kWh. This is significantly cheaper than coal power, which costs ₹4.5 per kWh. Cost Competitiveness: By combining the low cost of solar power with the reliability of battery storage, the blended price positions solar-plus-storage as a strong alternative to fossil fuels. Benefits to India’s Energy Sector: Climate Action: Solar-plus-storage addresses the intermittency of renewable energy, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 💡Updates to carbon accounting rules mean that carbon credit supply from India renewable energy projects peaked in 2021 and will rapidly decline throughout the next decade. This has MAJOR implications for those thinking about carbon credit availability to meet net emissions reduction targets.💡 Why major? 🤔 👉India renewables is by the far largest country/category mix in the VCM, at around 13.5% of historical supply (>2X the next biggest). 👉But it is a much higher proportion of the left hand side side of the marginal abatement cost curve (i.e. the most cost-effective abatement). 👉In environmental markets, 'cheap' doesn't automatically mean ineffective; it means cost effective. 👉And one of the most effective - and cost effective - things we can do for the climate is support the energy transition in middle-income, developing and least-developed countries. 👉Once India, China and Turkey renewables roll out of the renewable energy supply pipeline over the next half decade or so, supply will become severely constrained. Green Hydrogen Realities:One Side High Costs ,Another Side High Value & Demand One Side Climate-friendly hydrogen was one of the most-hyped sectors in green energy but its high costs impqcts have made some give up. some of the biggest would-be developers of the fuel have canceled projects, axed orders and scaled back investment plans. The low-carbon fuel is simply too expensive to stimulate demand in many sectors of the economy. Example:Origin Energy Ltd. canceled a project to produce the clean-burning fuel in an industrial area of eastern Australia. Production of clean hydrogen is set to jump more than 40% to reach 1 million tons in 2024, though that's still only about 1% of current hydrogen demand globally, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). This as per Bloomberg report. Another Side: Positive -High Demand Global Investor Interest ignites India’s green hydrogen ambitions at key ports. India’s ports are looking to push ahead on green hydrogen projects with at least two international players, Sembcorp Industries Ltd and Statkraft. India-Deendayal port received 13 bids for setting up green hydrogen, of which four have been finalised. India's Adani Group starts blending green hydrogen in Ahmedabad. The group’s city gas joint venture with French energy giant TotalEnergies, has started blending 2.2-2.3 per cent of green hydrogen in piped natural gas supplies in Shantigram in Ahmedabad.
