This was a fun conversation with Ergest. As a Data Analyst, I've been asked countless times by revenue leaders in [insert weekly meeting here] why a metric is falling. It's always astounded me how much time people waste scrambling for a narrative. This shouldn't be the way. Recently at Levers Analytics we started approaching Root Cause Analysis around metrics trends with a specific framework, and it's been mind blowing for me personally because no analytics teams I've ever been on have been so ..... methods-driven. Here's the framework we use. 1) Does the change in the metric even matter? What can look like a huge drop in [insert metric here] might not be a statistical anomaly. We use XmR charts (used in statistical process control) to identify control limits -- to basically see if week-over-week metrics are within normal variation. If we can demonstrate that metric fluctuation is "normal", then we should not waste more time with the RCA. This alone would have been transformative for my analytics teams in the past decade of my career. 2) What drove the metrics shift? Our standard approach here is to start with looking at Component Drift -- the most important piece of RCA in my opinion. We see a business unit as a system with inputs (metrics) and outputs (metrics) that have a hierarchical relationship to each other that can be expressed algebraically (a metrics tree). By going up the components of the metrics tree, we can see what changed that drove the shift. Once we identify what component(s) drove the change in the key metric, we look at the why. This is almost always either: - Seasonality - Segment shift (often called mix shift) - Influence drift (e.g. something driving a metric has changed, like a team process) - Event shocks (endogenous or exogenous) And that's it. We've gotten to the point of being able to do this RCA framework in < 1 hour for most of our clients. A far, far cry from the days/weeks most Analysts spend on RCA. There's an entire conversation to be had around what Data teams need to do to allow their Analysts to move this quickly (namely, to codify the _right_ metrics of the business -- and their relationships to each other vis a vis a metrics tree). But that's for another post, maybe (if I can ever get used to this posting on LinkedIn thing).

🚀 OpenAI's Project Strawberry: A New Era for AI Thinking 🌱 This is an exciting and insightful read that offers a great breakdown of what might be unfolding.... OpenAI's Project Strawberry, initially known as Project Q (Q-star), is shaping up to be a game-changer in AI. Unlike the current fast-responding models like ChatGPT, Strawberry is designed to take its time with responses, simulating more human like reasoning. It could be a breakthrough for reducing incorrect answers and providing deeper, more thoughtful responses in fields like mathematics and programming.  For me this is the cool part, as humans if we are asked a question, we don't generally just spit out the first thing that comes into our heads (maybe some do), we take our time, think about the answer, maybe research etc, this is what Strawberry will provide. I can imagine a future where GPT users can toggle between “quick-thought” for rapid responses or “slow-thought” (Strawberry) for more complex, reasoned answers based on the task at hand. This would maintain user experience but provide depth. One of the most significant aspects is the use of Strawberry to create new synthetic data. With much of the available online data already used, OpenAI is generating large amounts of high-quality synthetic data to train future AI models. This approach will lay the foundation for Project Orion (GPT5 maybe), the next-level AI model that’s expected to push innovation even further and take on the competition in unprecedented ways. GPT-5/Orion update! A brief update on this post, there are more signs that Project Orion is inching closer to release! I previously hinted at Strawberry/Q-Star now known as o1 (lots of code names), was an intermediate model (with a long term purpose), it is the generating lots of synthetic data to support the training of OpenAI's next frontier model (Project Orion). In a cryptic tweet, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has sparked major anticipation within the AI community by teasing the upcoming release of their next model - Orion. 🧠✨ Following the ground breaking success of GPT-3 and 4, this new AI model, Orion, is expected to represent a significant leap forward in capabilities. While details are still under wraps, experts believe Orion will push the boundaries of what AI can achieve across various industries. I was privileged to attend an extremely simple, yet insightful session on leadership by Mr. Vijay Sethi at the CIO&Leader conference as an ITNext100 Future CIO awardee. He shared 5 mantra's which essentially are integral for building the basic character for being a good leader. 1. Have good work ethics 2. Always have a positive attitude. 3. Nurture & inspire our teams 4. Focus on regularly enhancing our knowledge 5. Be a good human being. All of the above is nothing, if the leader does not demonstrate integrity, he said. One thing that resonated with me the most was his statement - "Good leaders do not create followers, they create more good leaders.". This statement brought back memories of my first tryst with formal leadership education when as a beginner in my professional journey I read the book, Good to Great - Jim Collins, where the author talks about Level 5 leadership who channelize their energies to build successors for their organizations. Something which had become a benchmark of my perspective of good leadership ever since. Creating perpetual organizations which transcend individuals. Of course, Mr. Vijay was talking about building good leaders at societal and business community level, which transcends organizations. As Dr. Prashun Dutta shared in his insights, it is our duty to repay the debt to society by contributing back and enabling others to become good leaders. All in all, a memorable and insightful weekend, where stalwarts took us back to first principles.
