"The south appears to be at the vanguard of a broader demand recovery in post-Covid India, with the five states that lead in several socio-economic metrics registering healthier sales of both discretionary and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in comparison with the rest of the country. Global consumer research firm Kantar’s latest report showed consumers in the south spent the highest on FMCG products, with an additional ₹2,261 spent per person on an average in 2023, compared with 2022. It also said the total number of shopping trips nearly doubled in 2023 from the previous year, with an exponential 185% growth in FMCG pack purchases. The data is for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. “This uptake in purchase signifies increased purchasing power and consumer confidence in the region, driving demand across various FMCG categories,” the report said. Companies said demand has improved for the entire country too, since January-March. The Retailers’ Association of India (RAI) reported growth rates in the west and north matching that of the peninsula only in April, with the south being India’s best-performing region in the past 12-15 months. RAI tracks retail-level sales growth across categories every month. In April, retailers in the south expanded sales 5% year-onyear against a 4% pan-India growth rate. In December, there was 7% growth in the south compared with 4% pan-India, RAI data showed. RAI chief executive Kumar Rajagopalan said the peninsular region is reporting better growth even for discretionary categories due to a far higher younger population and high disposable incomes. For FMCG, the growth is expected to be better as supermarket penetration is twice the rate of the rest of the country and this ensures higher shelf space for all categories of new products, he said. Chief executives said the southern recovery has been faster due to far greater concentration of new-age sectors such as startups and tech companies, which employ a young workforce that can easily afford higher discretionary expenditure. Manufacturing investment too has been robust, while remittances from overseas have bounced back after the pandemic in states such as Kerala. Marico chief executive Saugata Gupta told ET the south might be expanding faster due to more urban centres. The FMCG industry’s growth rate has been led by urban markets for five quarters till last calen dar year, while rural growth became higher only in January March. “This fiscal, the north will pick up in tandem with the rural sales recovery that has started. Embracing Modern Trade: Lessons and Opportunities for FMCG Companies 🚀 Modern Trade (MT) is a massive opportunity for FMCG companies, contributing around $15 billion annually in India, accounting for 15-20% of the total FMCG market. This figure is expected to double to $30 billion over the next 5-7 years. But, are companies evolving fast enough to harness this growth? 👥 Flashback to 15-20 years ago: I remember working with industry leaders like Procter & Gamble, Marico Limited, L'Oréal, and @HUL as they quickly adapted to the emerging MT landscape. Back then, we advised many of these companies on creating dedicated MT organizations, processes, and systems. It's gratifying to see their meticulous execution in stores today, with top-notch merchandising and promotions, clean displays following planograms, and well-trained promoters. Yet, not all companies have fully adapted. Many struggle with identifying winning products, pricing, and packaging. Even more concerning, a large chunk of MT growth is driven by an increase in the number of stores rather than same-store growth. With the current wave of store closures and transitions (e.g., Big Bazaar to Smart Bazaar), the underlying challenges are becoming more evident. 🛠️ Consider These Challenges: Lack of Insights: Companies often don’t have clear visibility on what’s working. Is a promotion effective? Which visibility campaign delivered results? Data baselining is tough but essential. Weak Data Skills: Unlike digitally evolved companies, many FMCG organizations struggle with basic data analytics, relying on outdated tools like Excel. Promotion Strategy: Relying on last year’s promotion plans without analyzing historical performance hinders innovation and effectiveness. Broken Processes: Permanent Journey Planning (PJP) is often delegated to junior sales officers, leading to inefficient store visits and poor resource allocation. Underutilized Resources: Despite increasing the number of in-store promoters and merchandisers, companies often lack the mechanisms to ensure their efficient use. 🌟 What Needs to be Done? The concerns raised by Minister Piyush Goyal highlight the critical need to balance the growth of e-commerce with the welfare of small retailers and the broader economy. While the e-commerce sector in India is projected to reach $188 billion by 2025, it currently represents only about 7% of the total retail market. However, with Flipkart and Amazon controlling over 80% of the online retail space, the risk of market concentration is significant. Addressing these challenges requires a nuanced approach to policy, focusing on sustainable growth and inclusive development.

Early election result trends suggest that BJP is heading for a landslide victory in Maharashtra; however, let me make a confession here I am totally non-aligned with BJP’s ideology, thought processes and actions; however, having said it, I am under legal, moral & ethical obligation to accept the people’s mandate without any ‘’if & but’’. Not all the voters are ideology-driven, and they must have seen their growth prospects in BJP. But, I am trying to make a different point here, for which, lets go back to 2024 General Elections (Parliamentary elections) wherein most of the pollsters had gone horribly wrong. BJP was expected to win absolute majority which did not happen. Subsequently, the Congress Spoke Persons went berserk and started attributing motives to every pollster, that they are BJP/RSS agent etc. etc. The most authentic pollster – Pradeep Gupta (Axis My India) was derided and humiliated routinely by Congress, and he cried in the studio. Actually, my problem with Congress is on this count when they start making allegations left, right & centre and attribute motives to everyone. Now, they have got eggs on their faces as in assembly elections of Maharashtra & Jharkhand, Pradip Gupta is the only one who seems to have called the Election right. Now, what will the Congress say? Will it still attribute motives? For any Professional, the biggest ideology is his ‘’Honest Professionalism’’. Each one of us have views, opinions and sometimes ideology (and nothing wrong with it) but a True Professional will never get driven by these things, because for him, his Professionalism would always be bigger than his caste, creed, religion or personal friendships. I am of the view, Pradeep Gupta (Axis My India) should never have cried in the studio for 2024 General Elections. He should have taken it on his chin and simply declared that this was just a failure on his part and moved on. He was emotional and non-professional on this count. If we lawyers start crying on every case we lose then our entire life shall get spent in Crying only. Because, no matter how big a lawyer is loses cases every other day!

Many SMEs in India, who form the bulk of the local sourcing, are part of the supply chain network; some serve big businesses in their upstream chain and some remain entrenched in the distribution and logistics part of the chain. But either way they seem to be subject of transactional relationships with big businesses, the suffering in the process stems from very high receivables; the big businesses enjoy a part of their cash flow improvement from the large payables they maintain. Some of SMEs have complained that their normal cycle of getting payments has gone up to anything between four to six months. When you pay your local suppliers after four- to six months of getting the product or service, you are creating the foundation of your cash flows by postponing those of your partners. We must go beyond the known success stories in sourcing when it comes to local sourcing. After all local sourcing cannot stop at the B2B where both the B’s are Big Bs. What about Big Business to SME or SME to Big Business? Indian businesses seem to fall short; whenever we try to look at success stories, they seem to be about big businesses and their value chains. It is time Procurement leaders focus on local sourcing with a different eye. Developing the small businesses must start by acknowledging that the cash flows of the small businesses, including SMEs, matter as much as that of the bigger players with whom they transact. This is very important because in the current state of things, the results show that small businesses simply fail to deliver a better price, quality or delivery reliability because they fall short of their cash needs as far as their working capital goes; investing for improving or increasing scale can only come thereafter. On the other hand, without a local supplier, all the 8 Rs fail very dramatically (at least recycling, recovering, re-using and replacing fail surely). Take the example of Bridgestone Tires and their program on developing a sustainable supply chain. It is built on the ability to recycle used tire materials as raw materials and convert them into tires and also look at options of using a used tire through refurbishment into a tire as a solution. All the talk on sustainability and reduction of waste involves partnerships if India has to embrace Circularity. The foundation of circularity is built on small players who could be local waste collectors, disposers, local farmer, transporter, converter, intermediary, recycler, community partners, including the consumers themselves who form the bulk of the membership. If waste has to be recycled, the chain could be this ensemble of people. The global supply chains of the world of fast fashion have taught us that unless we have a mechanism of putting the waste of fast fashion to be recycled, we are in perennial cycle of waste generation; we can learn from the Bridgestone Tire case study. #supplychain #strategicsourcing #localsourcing #partnership #recycling #waste #logistics

How consumer brand revolution creating a new league of millionaire's in India. India's consumer brand sector has seen tremendous rise in last decade, with 82 acquisitions , $3billion in equity financing and over 3000 new consumer brands emerging out in last few years. 💸 But, the same pattern has been observed in post world war II era of USA, where between the 1945 to 1960 within just 15 years of timeframe we have seen emergence of some global giants like Mcdonalds, Tide, Levi's and many more. And, the factors responsible for this are the same here in India also!📈 📌Rising income levels: since last 10 years GDP per capita of India has increased from $1200 to more than $2400. This risen income levels have provided millions of Indians an extra amount of money to spend on these products. 📌Increased consumerism: In 2008, just 3.4 crore Indians had a access to internet and fast forwarding to 2024 that number has crossed the 70crore mark. Also, the rapid adoption of services like UPI and various digital public goods have provided consumers a easy access to these products leading to an increased consumerism. 📌Innovative and efficient marketing channels: With increased penetration of internet and hyper growth of long form and short form content has provided an additional and cheap source of marketing to these brands, who are now able to promote their products to the right set of audience without paying hefty amount to TV ads and other traditional marketing avenues. 📌Emergence of new distribution: The size of ecommerce industry in India in 2014 was of $4billion dollars and in 2024 this number has crossed the $90billion mark. With incurrence top layers of ecommerce like social commerce and quick commerce has provided these new brands access to new geographies and opportunity to thrive on their products without taking care of last mile delivery and distribution problems. And, all these factors are leading to cascading growth of Indian founders who are making tremendous amounts of money with strategic acquisition or IPO routing of their brand. Because, the median equity of founders in these brands has ranges between the 73% to 82%. And, most of these strategic acquisitions with brands having 100crores or more ARR are happening in between $100 to $120million mark.
