PCI Hosts World Bank and Saudi Arabia Ministry Delegation on Digital Payments Enhancement The Payments Council of India hosted a delegation from The World Bank and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah - وزارة الحج والعمرة, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as part of a strategic study visit to examine India's digital payment systems. This initiative supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 objectives to increase non-cash transactions and enhance the payments experience for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. The delegation, led by Marco Nicolì (Sr. Financial Sector Specialist, World Bank) and Mr. Ahmed Omar S Alzahrani, (Director, Ministry of Hajj & Umrah), conducted comprehensive discussions on India's digital payments ecosystem with focus on cross-border payment solutions and pilgrim journey enhancement. Key areas of discussion included: 1. Digital Payments Adoption: Programs promoting digital payments for international travelers, digital financial literacy initiatives, fraud prevention measures, and regulatory frameworks facilitating cross-border payments through Payment Aggregator Cross-Border license holders. 2. Infrastructure and Technology: Digital public goods and key technologies that have enabled India's payment ecosystem success, particularly UPI's widespread adoption and international merchant payment facilitation. 3. Payment Flows and Settlement: Stakeholder mapping for domestic P2P and P2M payments, cross-border P2M payment flows, and clearing and settlement cycles for inward merchant remittances. The study visit forms part of the World Bank's support to Saudi Arabia in developing payment solutions that will benefit MSMEs catering to religious visitors while advancing digital financial inclusion objectives. The Council was formed inter-alia for the purposes of representing the various regulated non-banking payment industry players, to address and help resolve various industry level issues and barriers which require discussion and action. The session on card tokenization principles was led by Zubin Tafti and Kanishk Sarkar from PwC India. The importance of adhering to regulatory standards in tokenization practices was emphasized by Shantanu Shirke from Mastercard. Nidhi Jakhodia from Diners Club International explored the current details of the GDS flow for In-Direct Channel Sales.
