Today, women make up only 35.9% of the workforce, yet they are the backbone of over 12 million kirana stores across the country. 20% of businesses are already women-owned, and by 2030, this will rise to 30%—bringing a 1.5 percentage point boost in GDP. The potential is immense, and India can’t afford to wait. We’ve seen this transformation firsthand. Like a woman entrepreneur from Ghazipur who didn’t just assist in her family’s kirana store—she built her own thriving business, selling locally flavored processed foods like pasta and noodles. Her products flew off the shelves, turning her into a local success story. Yet, challenges remain—safety concerns, financial barriers, limited access to networks. These roadblocks can slow progress, but they won’t stop it. As Gita Gopinath (Deputy Managing Director, IMF) puts it—women’s safety is "non-negotiable and crucial" for unlocking their full potential.     How public does a founder need to be? Being part of the Forbes India Changemakers Podcast conversation was truly delightful and gave me a lot to chew on as someone who struggles with questions of how much and what all to share publicly. A little tangentially, my biggest takeaway was on how entrepreneurs can share their narratives. It was very inspiring to me to see how sincerely Ahana owns her mission and the clarity expressed in her narrative. As she shared, “Authenticity is the cornerstone of forging connections.” It was super refreshing to see Ahana own and normalize the entrepreneurial ‘Sell mode’ Ankur reminded me of a vital challenge - India is a trust-deficit nation. Building a brand here is about cultivating trust. And that brand for an entrepreneur can often come back to who they are - the USP is literally you. I’m still largely in the process of digesting and working on these thoughts but my increased attempts to connect with my people on social media stems from the inspiration I got from this panel.
