    Cloudy Skies, Dim Hopes: The Hidden Challenge Facing India's Solar Farms One of the annual reports that I eagerly look forward to , every year is the annual irradiation report put out by SolarGIS. They run an yearly analysis of solar irradiation levels and bring out the difference between GHI and the Long term Average (LTA). The report for India has been consistent in the last few years. GHI has been below LTA for the last few years for India. The last year (2024) has been no different. India (see pic below) is awash in green and blue colors indicating a sharp drop in GHI Vs LTA. Most of india experienced a 3%-10% drop in GHI marking another year of below average GHI. We have had one of the wettest monsoons in 2024 and while this may be beneficial for agriculture and water availability it is bad for solar energy production. The report goes on to say "Increased cloud cover, prolonged rainy periods, and extreme weather events reduced the availability of sunlight, particularly in regions like Central India and the Western Ghats. Regions such as Gujarat and Maharashtra – key hubs for solar power – experienced extended periods of below-average irradiation due to persistent cloud cover." A 10% drop in GHI, for example, can take solar plant generation to below P90 energy yield levels. This can trigger viability concerns, inability to service debt, breach financial covenants, resizing of debt and also can trigger minimum guaranteed generation metrics in the PPAs. This is climate change in action . It is staring at us in the face. Ironically the answer to this , is to add more clean energy to the Energy basket! Link to the full report in the comments below.
