3D printing played a crucial role in a challenging Adamantinoma case, preserving a young patient's lower leg. With a custom cutting jig, surgeons achieved precise tumor removal while maintaining bone integrity, reducing the need for invasive procedures. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬
Saving the Lower Leg through Medical Innovation Recently, we encountered a rare and unique medical case: Adamantinoma of the proximal tibia, a slow-growing and subtle tumor that gradually develops and can pose a serious risk if not diagnosed in time. Due to its rarity and lack of clear symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose. In this particular case, a 16-year-old patient had suffered for over three years with misdiagnoses of a benign condition. The complexity of the case led the patient to Dr. Israel Weiss, a senior orthopedic oncologist at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel. With his vast knowledge and experience, Dr. Weiss quickly diagnosed the tumor type and devised a treatment plan: surgery to remove the bone tumor, without the need for radiation or chemotherapy. At this point, Dr. Weiss approached us with a request to create a specialized cutting jig that would allow him to remove the tumor while preserving the posterior cortex of the bone and leaving clean margins, thus saving the limb without the need for extensive amputation. Using 3D imaging technology of Materialise company , we developed the custom jig that was printed with Stratasys 3D printer and enabled precise bone cutting around the tumor. Additionally, we created another cutting jig tailored to the bone defect left after the tumor removal, allowing for accurate bone grafting. Dr. Israel Weiss noted: “The medical innovation and the collaboration with your professional team enabled us to perform the surgery with precision and avoid more invasive interventions, while preserving the patient’s functionality.” Success stories like this highlight the importance of combining technological innovation with clinical expertise, ensuring the patient’s health and optimal recovery. https://lnkd.in/dWbH7Fe6 https://lnkd.in/dAsBkyEi #3DPrinting #MedicalDevices #Stratasys #Materialise #HealthcareInnovation #Adamantinoma #OrthopedicOncology #PSI #Surgery #IsraelMedicalInnovation #Segmentation #ChildrenSurgery
