New paths for diversity in innovation in Israel are emerging through a collaboration between Sheba Medical Center and the Druze community. An initiative, established by Sheba Impact, ARC Innovation, and Ofakim LaAtid ("Future Horizons")—and led by Amir Hasson, a dedicated member of the Sheba team and the Druze community—connects talented Druze entrepreneurs with mentors and resources. Five innovative entrepreneurs recently showcased their solutions at a breakthrough panel, marking the beginning of this transformative program. "If we, as civil society and hospitals, don't lead the change, it simply won't happen. That's why we started this initiative," shares Prof. Arnon Afek, Associate Director General at Sheba. I read today an article (https://lnkd.in/d_YRry27) in Calcalist כלכליסט, an Israeli business journal, addressing a troubling issue: the persistent challenges in integrating women into leading managerial roles. The article draws from Deliotte Haskins & Sells’s recent paper, revealing that female representation in leading companies remains alarmingly low, hovering around 25%. In an age of equality and progress, one would hope for more significant strides after years of discussion and legislation on this topic. How do we dismantle this glass ceiling? Past laws seemed promising, but it's evident that greater regulatory efforts are needed. Ensuring higher equality in publicly traded companies should be a priority, supported by investors who recognize the value of diverse leadership. Let's be clear: advocating for women in managerial roles isn't about tokenism. It's about recognizing talent and experience, regardless of gender. My limited personal experience has shown me that fostering diverse leadership, with more than 50% women managers, can be challenging to built, yet it proves to be crucial for the organization's success. This is a principle that I am committed to in any company I am involved with. Unfortunately, outdated perceptions persist, often favoring male CEOs over their equally qualified female counterparts. I firmly believe that diversity drives success in organizations. It's not just a matter of doing what's right; it's essential for growth and prosperity. According to the article, if we fail to act decisively, we could be waiting another 90 years to achieve gender equality in Israel.

For the first time in Israel, a groundbreaking collaboration between Magen David Adom (MDA) and Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem is significantly reducing waiting times for patients arriving at the emergency room. This innovative partnership enables the seamless transfer of critical medical information from MDA to the hospital, allowing for faster and more efficient care. As part of this collaboration, the Shaare Zedek information systems team developed a cutting-edge solution that automatically transfers patient records from MDA ambulances and intensive care units directly into the hospital’s systems. This technology eliminates the need for hospital staff to re-enter details upon the patient’s arrival, ensuring a smoother transition and quicker treatment. Since the system’s launch three months ago, it has already processed over 6,000 patients, with an average of 50 ambulances per day—accounting for around 40% of the ambulances arriving at Shaare Zedek’s emergency department. In the coming weeks, the system will expand to include both the pediatric and women's emergency rooms, further enhancing its impact and reach.

Participating in the ICI Meeting December 9-10, 2024 in Tel Aviv was an incredible experience. I had the honor of presenting AISAP in the ICI Innovation award finals and connecting with leaders in the field of cardiovascular interventions. These two days left me with 3 key insights: 1. Underdiagnosis of heart diseases, particularly heart failure and valvular conditions, remains one of the field’s biggest challenges. Despite groundbreaking treatment solutions, there is a critical need for diagnostic tools that can identify patients who require advanced care. 2. Delays in diagnosis are a life-or-death issue. Rural areas struggle with a lack of advanced diagnostic tools, while urban hospitals face overcrowding and limited resources. The future lies in democratizing and optimizing access to high-quality diagnostics and treatments, ensuring patients receive timely and accurate care wherever they are. 3. The path to solutions lies in creative partnerships across disciplines and technologies. Combining diagnostic and therapeutic innovations in ways that align with clinical workflows is crucial for transforming patient care. This conference was a powerful reminder of the work ahead but also the opportunities to make a meaningful impact. Why do we believe we are not getting the right answers from our doctor? A study in the Tel Aviv Medical Center examined the phenomenon of perceived information quality and availability after realizing that in the hospital, many patients (and their family) felt they were not getting answers — even though the doctors and the medical staff felt that they (the staff) provide them (the patients and family members) with lots of information via interaction in the hospital, by phone, email, at the bedside and in formal letters. The data from the hospital showed a gap between what the staff were doing and patients/family members prevalent perception that are not getting good enough information from the hospital staff. The study uncovered that when patients do have a face-to-face meeting with a doctor in the quiet of the office, they almost always feel that they have been given valuable information, even if they are unhappy with the answers or want to seek a second opinion. A zoom session is not a replacement for face-to-face interaction with a patient. The key seems to be the setting of how the information is provided and not the quality or essence of the information itself.
