Founders’ Corner: The Power of Focus, Hiring for Hunger, and Tackling Problems Early Meet Israel Krush co-founder and CEO of Hyro, a digital health SaaS company R-Squared Ventures is proud to be an investor in. Hyro bridges gaps between patient expectations and workforce capacity with AI-powered digital assistants, automating tasks like appointment management and prescription refills. To date, Hyro has raised $50 million and partnered with some of the largest health networks in the US. I met with Israel in NYC recently and asked him to share insights from his journey as a founder. The power of focus. Reflecting on the early days, Israel shared, “We started by serving multiple industries. I wish we’d focused on one customer segment instead of trying to build a ‘holistic platform.’ By narrowing our focus, we could deeply understand one segment, reach product-market fit faster, and drive revenue growth.” Hiring for hunger. Israel prioritized “hungry” talent. “Especially early on, hunger beats experience. We’ve had people grow with Hyro all the way to C-level. It’s about finding agile, self-driven team members who can adapt and thrive.” Addressing small problems early. One key lesson: don’t ignore recurring issues, no matter how small. “If a problem keeps repeating itself, tackle it before it grows, because it will. This includes acting quickly on culture or skill misfits, and having tough conversations around product and GTM direction.” Advice for first-time founders. Connecting with founders who’ve faced similar challenges: “Seek advice from experienced founders who genuinely want to help, not those looking for financial gain. Their perspective can help you avoid pitfalls.” Choosing investment partners you connect with deeply. Israel stresses the importance of a personal connection: “Winning or losing is up to you and your team, but choose investors you’d want by your side during the lows. You need someone you trust for genuine feedback through tough times. That’s your right partner.” To Israel and the Hyro team, thankful to be part of your journey. Corporate innovation explorers, check this podcast out - Always great doing things with Jeff Amerine, PMP, thanks for hositng me on the Innovation Junkie podcast, some key takeaways from our discussion that I thought would be interesting to share here: 1 - "The innovation curve" - know where you and your organization are on the innvoation curve and learn what's needed for that stage, some organizations are very early in the process and need to work on culture and basic infrasturcure and some are more advanced and need to focus on scale. 2 - "Startup Ready Enterprise" - You don't only need an "enterprise ready startup", you also need a "startup ready enterprise", find out what does your internal process look like and what will be required for people in your org. to be able to take in working with startups. (some of the things will be discovered only once you run a few startups through the process) 3 - "Don't wing it" Establish a structured process and methodology for evaluating, piloting, and implementing startup solutions. This ensures focus, speed, and alignment between the startup and corporate stakeholders. The friction and effort from misalignment and lack of transparency are too expensive for you and your organization, you don't have a lot of time. 4 - "Communicate and then over communicate" Bridge the cultural gap between startups and large enterprises by providing clear guidance and setting expectations early in the engagement process. This helps startups understand the corporate environment, terminology, and decision-making processes and also people on your team to be able to know what's coming up next. 5 - "Less surprises for everyone, more resutls" - Involve key stakeholders like procurement, legal, and security teams from the start to identify and adapt internal processes that may hinder innovation.Their buy-in and flexibility are crucial for successful implementation. 6. "You can do it!, they did it" Instill a belief in the "art of possible" by learning from peers who have successfully implemented corporate innovation programs. This can help overcome internal resistance and skepticism. The past year has been a period of great upheaval and uncertainty in Israel, yet the high-tech sector has proven steadfast, despite concerns over investment and durability and swathes of the workforce serving in the IDF reserves for long stretches at a time.  And as Israel navigates this time of war on multiple fronts – with its troops fighting in Gaza and Lebanon as well as handling attacks from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen – NoCamels asked leaders in the sector to look forwards and share their thoughts on what the future holds for the national high-tech industry, whose strength and vitality earned the country the moniker “Startup Nation.”   Israeli readiness to embrace innovation, even when it seems somewhat risky, is a long-standing trait that is key to the sector thriving even in wartime – and crucial to it flourishing in the years to come, says Jon Medved, the CEO of Israel’s global investment powerhouse OurCrowd.  “The fact that Israel grows and it continues to grow its tech sector during war is sort of a core element of who we are,” Medved tells NoCamels.  “The reason that we’re so strong in the startup arena boils down, more than any other single reason, to our attitude towards risk. I am excited to share that my opinion piece about how Israeli startups are missing crucial funding opportunities was published in Calcalist כלכליסט. 📌 link to the article in the first comment In the article, I discuss an alarming trend I’m seeing firsthand: many Israeli startups are shutting down without fully exploring all their funding options, particularly when it comes to grants – both local and international. At Twinnovation, I spend a lot of time mentoring startup portfolios of VCs and accelerators, and regularly give lectures and webinars to help founders discover and access critical funding opportunities. What surprises me is how often these companies are hearing about grants for the first time from us. Even when they are aware, they typically only consider local grants and carry a lot of misconceptions about them. What can we do to change this? Startups need to broaden their horizons when it comes to funding. Applying for grants, whether on a national or international level, can be a critical lifeline. It’s time to raise awareness and help founders take advantage of these underutilized resources. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Fast-Track Funding Program Israeli Tech Companies Program's Description As a quick response to the challenges tech companies are facing, as a result of the “Iron Swords” war, the Israel Innovation Authority is offering a “Fast Track” funding program to support technological companies and projects. Goal of the incentive program This funding program operates through the Innovation Authority’s R&D fund and is designed for innovative Israeli tech companies with a short runway (up to 6 months) that are in the process of raising capital. Those companies that experience challenges in raising capital due to the situation and in need of bridge funding, are the target of this program. Who is the incentive program for? The fast track is designed for Israeli companies who are in the midst of development/early sales with substantial assets (technologies, unique team, consumers etc). What do you get? Is the Israeli business community truly ready for high-achieving Haredi professionals to take leadership roles in the tech ecosystem? We are, as Safra-Tech’s mission is to integrate Haredi professionals into the tech ecosystem, with a focus on #entrepreneurship and #startups We're not merely asking how we can slot Haredi workers into low-level roles… we're asking a far more ambitious question: How can we make Haredi society a key stakeholder in the tech ecosystem? It’s not about individual Haredi employees entering the tech world… it’s about a shift in Israeli society’s perspective, becoming key influencers and decision-makers, and having the ability to progress, to secure better jobs, and to make a real impact This is a wake-up call, not just for Haredi society, but also for the wider Israeli business community. As an example, the current #VC scene (which drives tech) in Israel is centralized, steeped in a Tel Aviv culture that brings with it its own mindset and politics To effect real change, we need to alter the landscape itself Aside from giving it lip service, does Israeli society truly want integration? Is the business sector ready for Haredi professionals to become C-level executives, managers, and policy influencers? If the answer is no, then we need to ask ourselves why… Why are we content with Haredi employees occupying low-level roles, but not decision-making positions? To catalyze progress, we need outside investors who understand the need for change, who are willing to provide the financial backing necessary to make this vision a reality. This cannot be left to the same players who have dominated the scene so far.
