ECG AI is proven to saves lives! We use AI every day at Clalit Innovation, to create disease prediction models, diagnosis tools and treatment recommendations. But, this week, a new study out of Taiwan showed, for the first time, that using ECG AI-based alerts to warn physicians about high-risk patients led to an astounding 31% drop in mortality and an even bigger drop in cardiac death. The trial showcased how by implementing AI-based ECG alert tools, mortality risks decreased significantly within a month. Israel is a giant playground if you can perceive it as such. One of my adventures in the corridors of Israeli academia (it’s a comedy. They all are) involved an esoteric investigation into a new class of numbers. There was a notion that there is a negative zero and a positive zero, and that it is somehow useful. I came in to the lab, understood what is required, and wrote the code that produces negative and positive zeros, and queries that perform statistical analysis on the outputs, etc, etc, etc. Negative zeros, positive zeros, perhaps useless in any case aside from slippage calculation in zero-ish trade thresholds. It's fascinating to witness the rapid pace of innovation and how these giants are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AI. Key takeaways from the interview: OpenAI's GPT 4o Launch: OpenAI introduced GPT 4o, a model that’s twice as fast and half the cost of its predecessor. With 100 million active weekly users, the goal is to make AI models even more accessible and integrated into daily life. Exciting features like video calls with ChatGPT are on the horizon! Google's Gemini Upgrade: At Google’s annual developer conference, they showcased enhancements to their AI model, Gemini, which can now handle more data and produce even more sophisticated outputs. Google also emphasized the integration of AI in their search engine and the development of advanced personal assistants. The Future of AI: Both companies are striving towards creating intelligent personal assistants that can handle a myriad of tasks seamlessly. This includes recognizing emotions in voice and eventually through video. In the interview, I mentioned: "Until now, integrating individual text segments into models was a manual process. The future model aims to provide continuous and comprehensive responses, seeing everything you see. However, it's unclear when this will become a reality." Challenging Business Models: It's intriguing to see how these companies might be disrupting their own business models. OpenAI’s move to offer GPT-4 for free aims to build a vast user base, which could convert to premium users in the future. For Google, integrating AI into search might reduce ad revenue but is essential for maintaining relevance. NVIDIA’s Crucial Role: Both OpenAI and Google acknowledge NVIDIA’s pivotal contribution with their advanced GPUs, which are essential for these AI advancements. This collaboration underscores NVIDIA's importance in the AI ecosystem. The AI landscape is incredibly dynamic, and it's a privilege to be part of this revolution. I published this week in ynet an article (https://lnkd.in/dgp2T945) calling to stop the construction of new gas-fired power plants. Here is an English translation - in 3 parts. part 1: The construction of new gas-fired power plants is a colossal waste. About half a year ago, the Minister of Energy made the final decision to cease electricity generation at the Reading station in the heart of Tel Aviv. This followed years of zigzagging decisions, accompanied by threats from industry professionals of "doomsday darkness scenario", a professional term that has become commonplace. In its place, a battery storage facility will be built. It is fitting that a similar decision be made to scrap plans for the construction of new gas‑fired power plants, such as the Kassem and Reindeer power stations. The development plan for the electricity sector prepared by Noga, the Israeli independent system operator, after examination under extremely conservative assumptions, determined that (barely) two additional gas‑fired stations are needed by 2030. These stations are de facto already in development - in Sorek and Eshkol - so there is no need for additional ones. A recent decision made by the National Planning Council, encouraged by the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Administration and opposed by the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, is just plain wrong. Every additional gas‑fired station is a waste of public funds, leads to pollution, locks us into continued greenhouse gas emissions, and harms public health and the environment. Noga’s conservative assumptions did not consider additional options for dealing with peak demand: 1. It is already clear that even if we do not meet the 2030 renewable energy target of 30%, we will not be far from it. Therefore, we will not even need the two gas-fired stations whose construction has already begun. 2. The electrification of vehicles, which was a source of concern for Noga, is proving, as I have previously argued, the opposite in recent days, when the WEVO, a company which manages the charging of thousands of electric vehicles, showed that it was able to significantly reduce the electricity consumption of vehicles during peak hours through flexible pricing. In this matter as well, Noga’s concerns are proving to be unfounded. 3. The entry of private suppliers - companies that consumers can be connected to in order to reduce the cost of electricity - makes the possibility of demand management, which was not considered at all in the development plan, feasible. Suppliers will strive in the coming years to reduce peak demand, as their profits depend on it.

Reichman University is the leading incubator of academic entrepreneurship in Israel and the world. The data speaks for itself: last week a study by Prof. Ilya Strebulaev from Stanford University was published and found that startups of founders who studied at Reichman University, and received an investment from a US venture capital fund, are 11.3% more likely to reach unicorn status. According to the research findings, Reichman University is ranked second in the world (!). The study included only universities outside the US. The young Reichman University has produced 14 companies that have become unicorns, and in relation to its size and age, this is an unprecedented number. The findings emphasize the significant contribution of Reichman University, specifically the Adelson School of Entrepreneurship to the global technology and business industry, and its central role in the success of the State of Israel as a global technology leader!

As a result of the war, the Israeli defense industry and defense-tech companies have been at the forefront. A recent article I wrote for Calcalist כלכליסט explains how we can leverage the significant investments made in defense industries and their outstanding achievements for environmental sustainability and overcoming climate change. Dual-use technology refers to technologies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes, thereby maximizing the advantages of advanced technologies. A drone is a great example of dual-use technology – on one hand, it can be used for military surveillance, and on the other hand, it can also be used to monitor climate-related changes such as methane and other GHG emissions monitoring, weather patterns, etc. In the article, I provided more examples of dual-use technologies, including satellite technologies and green transportation. Defense industries and Israeli defense-tech companies can play a central role in dual-use technology. Investing in dedicated bodies like Capital Nature can provide the necessary network and market access for these technologies.
