IVC Data and Insights report on the Israeli venture market for Q1-Q3 2024 reveals: - $7.4 billion invested in Israeli startups, surpassing the entire 2023 total of $6.9 billion. - $13 billion generated from exits, a 26% increase from 2023's $10.4 billion. - 23% surge in foreign investments year-over-year. - 67% of capital sourced from global investors, with 33% from Israeli funds. - $2.7 billion secured by early-stage startups, the second-highest figure in Israeli startup ecosystem history (after 2022's record). These figures demonstrate investors' confidence in the long-term sustainability of the Israeli startup ecosystem. Trust received, challenge accepted. We're building the future, brick by brick.

B2B or B2C? Israeli companies are known to excel in the B2B segment. The funding for B2B startups in Israel has increased fivefold over the past 10 years. Although there are also new success stories in the B2C segment, such as monday.com, Lemonade, Wix, and Fiverr, B2C unicorns represent only 20% of all Israeli unicorns. At Capsulab, we focus on a B2B2C approach. We realize that we need to reach end users, but believe it is easier to do so via a strong brand as a partner. However, we are constantly discussing the possibility of launching our own B2C brand. As Eli Gold mentioned in her last article, there is a huge opportunity in B2C for Israel and Capsulab in particular. As Cid Carver 🎗️ Carver says, we need to start with a prelaunch analysis of B2C opportunities and risks before making any attempts in B2C. We understand that B2C requires larger budgets and a different team skillset. However, I believe that if we want to succeed in B2B, we need to start a B2C brand. This is because large companies are not flexible and do not tolerate risks. Therefore, they prefer to acquire new B2C brands with enormous valuations rather than grow and risk their own innovations. 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐔𝐬. It’s time we take back and redefine failure in entrepreneurship! In VC centric communities like Silicon Valley and high-tech Tel Aviv, failure isn’t just accepted—it’s almost a badge of honor. Venture capitalists know that true innovation often comes from bold risks, and bold risks sometimes lead to failure. Entrepreneurs wear their setbacks like medals because they’ve learned, adapted, and come back stronger. But in many parts of America, failure carries a stigma. Entrepreneurs who face setbacks are riddled with shame, as if failing is a sign of incompetence rather than a natural part of the process. And this mentality is toxic to innovation. And for a long time, I carried that shame myself. I merged my business into a larger, better-funded company, thinking it would be the breakthrough we needed. Instead, it led to the closure of my brand and a less-than-ideal outcome for my investors. The vision of creating the $100 million iconic, decade durable brand was dead. The weight of that failure hit me hard. I felt like I had let everyone down. The shame was overwhelming. So, I retreated. Instead of pursuing my dreams, I spent the next two years working as a consultant, avoiding the risk of failing again. Two whole years gone—years I can’t get back. In hindsight, I could have done almost anything. Two years of pursuing someone else’s dreams instead of my own—all because my perception of this being a failure. What I’ve learned is that shame grows in silence. The more I tried to hide my failures, the more it controlled me. But when I finally opened up and shared my story, that shame lost its power. It wasn’t a weakness anymore—it became part of my strength. Looking back, I realize I didn’t truly fail. I took a bold risk. I went all in and gave it everything I could. I learned. And I came out stronger. This experience became the foundation for my next business that exceeded mine and my partners initial vision. The problem wasn’t the failure, it never is—it was the shame I allowed myself to feel. Most successful serial entrepreneurs had businesses that didn’t succeed. Failure is part of the process. To foster the same culture of breakthrough innovation seen in Silicon Valley, we need to embrace failure as part of the journey. Failure doesn’t define you—it’s what you do. I say stop hiding, stop feeling ashamed, stop second guessing thosedecisions, and stop letting your perception of failure hold you back. Entrepreneurs, we must stop fearing failure and being ashamed our mistakes. We must just learn from them. Use them as fuel for what comes next. I promise decades from now, the comebacks are what you will be most proud of with a perspective of the failures that could never define you. **An Israeli Startup Entrepreneur’s Response to Darkness, Part II** Imagine someone asked you to go into a room and turn off the dark. ?!?! What would you do? Of course, you would turn on a light. And if they asked you to turn the dark back on, well, you would turn off the light. Because darkness does not have a switch – it has no ‘שימוש’. It is the absence of light, or the presence of light. You want less darkness? Well there is only one question to ask – one thing to do: Turn on a light. Most of the corporate business world deals with trying to turn off the dark. That is, they sit with the status quo, and move around existing technologies and resources in order to create different results. Not us entrepreneurs. No sir. No Ma’am. We light new lights. ‘ויהי אור’ – Let there be light.  We have these highly unusual spirits. Where others see painful gaps that must be managed, we imagine new solutions. Where others struggle with existing darkness, we find new ways to create light. The cool thing about light is, that unlike any other element, it multiplies without diminishing when you share it. It’s like my teacher, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach once said: “If I pour you some water from my cup, now we both have half a cup (before, I had a full cup). But when I light your unlit candle with my flame, now we have two flames. And when we join them together, the sum is greater than either part. That’s us Israeli entrepreneurs. And the thing is, we have another crazy power.  I think it comes from us Jews waiting 2,000 years to return to our homeland, always believing it was going to happen “any day now!”  Yeah, doesn’t that sound like most startup founders that you know?? You see, it is in our DNA. We don’t do ‘hopelessness’. We are more tenacious than even Jack Black. ‘חוסן’ - 'Resilient' - is our middle name. So let’s remember who we are, my dear fellow members of the Israeli Startup Community. Our Nation needs our Superpower.  Let’s turn on those lights like never before. עם ישראל חי

Tech Transfer – Have You Tried It? Bridging the gap between research and commercial application is never simple, but it’s an essential leap for innovation, especially in the #foodtech sector that relies on deeptech and biology that takes time to develop. The journey often starts with tough negotiations over licensing agreements. Universities do an excellent job protecting their IP and ensuring their future incomes, and continues with the clash of cultures - academia thrives on exploration and discovery, while the industry needs fast, market-ready solutions. The timelines and priorities don’t always align. Medium Well Technological Solutions began as a spin-off from a concept that emerged at the The Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Like many ventures starting from academia, our path has been complex. But despite the challenges and the physical distance between our labs (initially 200 km apart and then down to 100 km…), we’ve managed to operate as a cohesive team, supporting each other every step of the way. The most important lessons we learned for positive collaboration: 📢 Effective Communication: we kept regular and transparent communication to bridge the gaps and align goals. 🔬 Leverage University Resources: we enjoyed access to advanced analytics, state-of-the-art labs, and experience across various fields. These resources can significantly boost a lean startup, especially in a sector as technically demanding as foodtech. 📈 Plan for Scale Early: We considered scalability and commercialization from the very beginning, and always focused on finding the right moment to transition from research to product development.
