𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞.😅 Let me share a story about a job interview that taught me a valuable lesson about handling feedback and adapting on the fly. A while back, I had a promising interview for a UX design role at a tech startup 🚀, and eager to stand out, I decided to do more than just prepare answers. I took a deep dive into their website, noticed some areas for improvement, and created a redesigned landing page that I believed could elevate their brand 💡. Fast forward to the interview, I confidently presented my redesign, expecting it to be a hit. But instead of the excitement I imagined, the lead designer gave me a cold stare. It became clear that my redesign wasn’t landing as I had hoped. I didn’t get the role, and at first, I didn’t understand why 🤔. Looking back, I can now see where I went wrong. Here are a few ways I could have handled the situation better: 𝟏. 💡 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲’𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: I should have asked more questions during the interview to better understand their design goals and challenges before jumping in with my own solutions. Tailoring my redesign to address their specific needs would have made my pitch more relevant. 𝟐. 🛠️ 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲: Instead of positioning my redesign as a replacement, I could have framed it as an enhancement. Highlighting the strengths of their existing design and how my changes could address particular pain points would have been a more constructive approach. 𝟑. 🗣️ 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: Rather than being caught off guard by the feedback, I could have used it as a learning opportunity. Asking for clarification and engaging in a discussion about their design vision might have turned the conversation in a more positive direction. 𝟒. 🔄 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭: I should have asked what specific aspects of the design didn’t resonate with them and adjusted my approach during the conversation. Demonstrating adaptability is a powerful skill in any interview. 𝟓. 📩 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐔𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: Even though the interview didn’t go as planned, following up afterward with a professional thank you and a request for further feedback could have kept the door open for future roles. This experience taught me the importance of truly understanding the client’s needs, presenting ideas thoughtfully, and handling criticism constructively. And to the recruiter from that company, thank you for the experience—it’s made me a better designer today! 😅 For any designers out there who’ve faced similar interview challenges, how did you handle it? Today’s my last day at Ameelio. It’s a sad world we live in when you leave a job and people automatically think it’s because the workplace was a disaster (or because you’re a fool). I find myself in the peculiar and somewhat tragic situation of leaving a great job for my next adventure. Rather than feeling reflexively tied to what has been, I am leaning towards the chapter ahead. (More on that to come.) I want to share that what I will take with me is not the typical list of accomplishments (not even going to mention those here), nor memories of the very normal trials and tribulations of work. It will be the little celebrations, the simple things that honestly made the biggest difference for me... (For the record, this is equal parts because of my colleagues and because of my own awareness and attitude.) 🎊 Working with people who consistently demonstrated they care deeply about some of the people who are the most often forgotten (or worse): people who are incarcerated, people with low incomes, and people with disabilities. 🎊 Collaborating with people who trusted my expertise, and who were open to me stretching us when it made good sense. 🎊 Connecting with colleagues, having remarkably candid conversations, and experiencing feedback being received with genuine curiosity, humility and concern. The thread: People. As machines continue to increase their influence on our working lives, let’s not forget it’s people that matter, *and* that putting people at the center is easier said than done so when it happens it’s a call for celebration.

Today, while chatting with Alex Lasek she mentioned the calculator numpad, and I was surprised I never asked myself why it's ordered like this and not like the telephone one, soooo, I did some research on it. 😁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗱 The calculator numpad, with its distinctive 1-2-3 bottom row and 7-8-9 top row, is a well-known design today. Unlike telephone keypads, this layout resulted from user experience research, behavioral studies, and ergonomic considerations, highlighting user-centered design's importance. The numpad's roots trace back to early mechanical adding machines and cash registers from companies like Burroughs, NCR, and IBM. The necessity for operators to input numbers quickly and accurately drove the design choices of these early machines. 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 • Frequency of Use: Lower digits (1-3) were entered more frequently, so placing them at the bottom, where fingers naturally rest, made sense. • Hand Movements: Starting from the bottom and moving upward was more intuitive, especially for right-handed users, minimizing finger movement and enhancing speed. 𝗘𝗿𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 • Minimizing Strain: Placing 1-2-3 at the bottom reduced hand strain, allowing for a more natural position. • Visual and Manual Coordination: Entering numbers from bottom to top was more ergonomic for repetitive tasks, making entries smoother and quicker. 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 Human factors research highlighted: • Consistency and Familiarity: Users familiar with early machines found it easier to transition to electronic calculators with a similar layout, improving user satisfaction. • Intuitive Design: The bottom-up layout was intuitive, allowing new users to adapt quickly. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 The telephone keypad's 1-2-3 top row layout did not significantly impact the calculator design, as it focused on visual recognition for dialing, not rapid data entry. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 The calculator numpad layout is a prime example of successful user-centered design. By focusing on user behavior, ergonomic principles, and experimental validation, engineers created a layout that remains effective and intuitive. The 1-2-3 bottom row configuration optimizes speed and accuracy while providing a comfortable, familiar interface, demonstrating UX research's critical role in creating enduring tools.

My mentor's career is thriving! I'm thrilled to be rejoining the DizArm Behance magicians – a team of mentors and mentees aiming to complete 16 Behance case studies in 3 months! Alongside Nataliia Tanasova and Alina Uchyk, I'll be working on redesigning a platform for scheduling psychology sessions. This project promises significant skill development. Throughout the process, we'll refine both our UI and UX skills. Our initial steps will involve: Analyzing the current app: We'll identify its strengths and weaknesses, brainstorming solutions to address the issues. Competitor analysis: We'll research competitors, uncovering their strengths and weaknesses to inform our design approach. I'm excited to embark on this journey again. One of the biggest surprises—and challenges—of Moun’s project was discovering Wix Studio, a ‘new’ tool for me that took the experience to another level. I was excited to find that Wix Studio offers much more flexibility and precision when compared to Wix, making it easier to follow our original designs from Figma with good accuracy. With features like three-device breakpoints and a Responsive AI tool (currently in beta), more up to date animations and designs possibilities, I could create a more seamless and modern experience that aligns with the brand’s vision. But learning Wix Studio also brought its challenges. After using Framer for a while, it took some readjustment to get comfortable with Wix Studio's layout and editing tools, and a few elements, like the zoom visualization mode, the header and the product page widget, still lack full editability without custom code. However, resources like the Wix Fix YouTube channel were a lifesaver—highly recommend it if you’re diving into Wix Studio for the first time! There’s still more to explore, like the Figma-to-Wix plugin, and I’m excited to see how Wix Studio evolves. Have you worked with Wix Studio before? Config showed us last week that Figma has been ship-ship-shipping 🚢 Some of our favorite new updates: - Auto Layer Renaming (great for handoffs between our design leads Alejandro Rodriguez & Monish Khara). - The new AI features are a little bit scary, but definitely handy! - The prototyping and dev mode upgrades make getting our client's websites live so much easier. But hands down the show stealer was Figma Slides. Google Slides is great because it's so easily shareable, but it always lacked granular design control. It looks like Figma Slides is going to plug that need, we’re excited to start using it!

Optimizing the development process at Anchovi was a significant achievement, thanks to the implementation of a multi-platform design system. By investing in this upfront, we were able to save substantial time and money in the long run. Here’s how: 1. Faster Development Time 🚀: With a unified design system, our developers had a clear and consistent framework to work within, speeding up the coding process and reducing the back-and-forth between design and development. 2. Faster Design Time 🎨: Our design team benefited from a set of reusable components and guidelines, which allowed for quicker iteration and reduced redundancy. This meant we could focus more on innovation and less on recreating elements for different platforms. 3. Consistency in UX 📏: By ensuring a consistent user experience across all platforms, we enhanced usability and user satisfaction. A cohesive design system meant that our users enjoyed a seamless interaction with Anchovi, regardless of the device they used. 4. As a product designer, I've noticed that many junior product designers in Iraq are struggling to find their footing. The market is saturated with generic content claiming to reveal the secrets of UX design. These aspiring designers face a daunting landscape, left feeling lost and uncertain about where to start. The Problem with 'Good Enough' Design: Meanwhile, many product designers are getting praised for doing the bare minimum – simply because no one else was doing it before. But let's be honest: "good enough" is not good enough. We need designs that truly elevate user experiences and drive business success. What Can We Do? 🚀 Streamlining Complexity: From 408 Button Variants to 1 🚀 We faced a challenge with our legacy Design System—408 button variants, each covering various sizes, states, and purposes. Managing this complexity was no small feat. 🌟 The Solution: We are rebuilding our Design System from the ground up.
