Take a look at this picture. It was taken today at our Salesforce offices in Tel-Aviv. It shows a few dozens of Salesforce Israel employees in one of our regular all-hands meetings. What's so special about that? Well, that picture was taken exactly 36 hours after Iran launched a massive aerial strike against Israel with 100s of UCAVs, ballistic and cruise missiles carrying about 60 tons(!) of explosives. Thanks to the Israeli Air force, the air forces of the US, UK, France, Jordan and others *and* Israeli innovation and engineering talent who developed the most advanced multi-layered air defense systems in the world - luckily that attack ended up with relatively low impact. It was a sleepless night for all us in Israel who got an advanced notice of the attack and basically spent that night bracing for impact. Now take another look at this picture. 36 hours later - People showing up at the office, talking to each other, having a few laughs, having meetings, discussing deadlines, solving business problems, discussing engineering problems, doing demos, having coffee and lunch together, having an all-hands meeting together. 36 hours ago we were bracing for impact of 60 tons of explosives that were about to fall out of the sky. My friend Itai Guez shared this article with me (Geektime גיקטיים https://lnkd.in/dPSPfr5f), and I believe the author drew inspiration from the book Microservices Patterns by Chris Richardson. What caught my attention was the mention of the Saga pattern, though the author didn't provide details, only noting its complexity and that explaining it was beyond the scope of the article. The Saga pattern is a method to manage rollbacks in a microservices architecture. However, since it relies on event-driven communication between services, Kafka Streams facilitates this scenario through stateful operations. For instance, a financial transaction can be implemented at a high level by joining two streams—one to create the transaction and another to allocate the necessary quota. In software development, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Keeping things simple and avoiding preliminary assumptions, it would probably work until it is doesn't, which may never come. Why is this so crucial? - Israel's productivity gap (GDP per hour worked) is the biggest challenge to realizing its economic growth potential. - Alongside the demographic challenge, aggressively addressing the "Infrastructure Gap" is a top priority. - Approximately 25% of the productivity gap is attributed to infrastructure deficiencies in transportation, particularly mass transit. - Over the next 10-15 years, Israel will invest more than NIS 0.5 trillion in capital projects for Transportation and Energy (1.5-2% increase in investment of GDP annually). Meanwhile I heard about 18% cut in one of my ex-customers this week. “The Israeli high-tech paradox”, that’s how the accounting and consulting firm PwC Israel describes the state of exits in 2024. Despite the ongoing war and a global environment of soaring interest rates—perhaps even because of them—the past year (up to December 8) has seen a 78% surge in the value of exits by Israeli companies. The total amount reached $13.4 billion, compared to $7.5 billion in 2023. These figures are impressive even when measured against 2021, a historic record year for Israeli high-tech."
