PCI DSS v4.0 Req: 2.2.2 Vendor default accounts are managed as follows: • If the vendor default account(s) will be used, the default password is changed per Requirement 8.3.6. • If the vendor default account(s) will not be used, the account is removed or disabled. 🔒 This requirement addresses reducing attack surfaces. Network devices typically come with default settings, such as passwords, accounts, services, ports, and applications. It's crucial to change at least the password or disable/remove unused accounts whenever possible. These defaults are publicly known, making them easy targets for attackers. If an attacker identifies that you're using a specific vendor's devices, they might try exploiting these default settings to gain access. By ensuring default settings like accounts and passwords are changed, organizations are taking steps to reduce their attack surface. This is one less thing they need to worry about.

This encompasses tasks such as documentation, upkeep, and dissemination. Proper documentation ensures clarity and consistency, while effective dissemination ensures all relevant personnel are informed about the policies and procedures. It is essential to keep policies and procedures up-to-date, as changes in technology, processes, or business objectives may require revisions to maintain effectiveness. For effective policy management, a centralized repository for all policies and procedures may be necessary to ensure easy access and consistency. Implementing version control to track changes made to policies and procedures over time is crucial. Providing training on relevant policies and procedures is also important to ensure employees understand their roles and responsibilities. (ISC)² CISSP Certification Now Comparable to Masters Degree Standard. The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification has been found comparable to Level 7 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) in the UK, denoting that the certification is comparable to Masters degree standard. This further validates the achievement of CISSP-certified professionals in their ongoing career and qualification progression and supports educational institutions looking to determine weighting of a relevant certification to award course credits. It follows the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT®) recognizing six (ISC)² certifications as eligible for college credit. The benchmarking of the CISSP was conducted by UK NARIC, the UK’s designated national agency responsible for providing information and expert guidance on academic, vocational and professional qualifications from across the world. UK NARIC conducted an in-depth independent benchmarking study of the CISSP certification, using its well-established methodology for credential evaluation. This involved reviewing core qualification components as well as a comparative analysis of the skills assessed during a candidate’s computer adaptive test (CAT) examination to the RQF. The analysis saw UK NARIC conclude the qualification assessed knowledge and skills comparable to the RQF Level 7 standard, with clear emphasis on assessing specialized cybersecurity knowledge, understanding and application of skills including: organizational problem solving and decision making, awareness and correct use of industrial standards, policy and best practice, along with understanding and appropriate use of methodologies, techniques and training in relation to cybersecurity. “Recognizing the CISSP as comparable to Masters level qualifications further underlines the robust educational and operational value of the certification within Europe,” said Deshini Newman, managing director EMEA at (ISC)². “It will support our members in their career progression as they embark on opportunities both within their own organizations and externally when applying for roles with degree entry criteria.” The RQF is a framework developed by the UK Government to describe the demands in different qualifications across an eight-level scale. The RQF can be used to help understand how qualifications relate to each other. As the levels of the RQF have also been referenced to the eight levels on the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), the RQF and EQF can help employers understand and compare qualifications awarded in different countries, allowing for portability or transferability across the region. An excellent research report by Silverfort on the rising risks of Non-Human Identities, where they zero in on the most prevalent and regularly compromised type of NHIs - Active Directory Service Accounts. Causes may include poor design, human error, or inadequate implementation. 2. 📋 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆: When an organization does not follow its documented policies and procedures, such as failing to enforce password policies, it results in exceptions. 3. 💻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: System or software malfunctions, such as a security patch not deploying or unexpected downtime, can lead to exceptions impacting security or availability. 4. 🚨 𝗨𝗻𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: When identified risks are not properly addressed, it increases the organization’s exposure to vulnerabilities. Beyond exceptions, auditors provide different types of opinions in SOC 2 Type 2 reports, which include: ✅ 𝗨𝗻𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻: Controls are effectively designed and operating as intended without significant issues. ⚠️ 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻: Controls are generally effective but there are some exceptions or deficiencies. ❌ 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻: Controls are not effective, and significant issues exist that raise serious concerns. ❓ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻: Issued when the auditor cannot obtain sufficient evidence to form an opinion, often due to lack of access or data.
