RTE vote counter feature shows proportional representation very nicely using data visualisation. It shows how Willie O'Dea's surplus distributes after Mr O'Dea is returned on the 5/6th count in Limerick City. Never seen the distribution demonstrated or explained so clearly. In my opinion this is much fairer system than UK, US where members of congress & MPs can hold seats for 40 years effortlessly. Here's a follow-up I put together... The importance of application security made the news last week when HSE experienced a data breach on their COVID vaccination portal built on Salesforce. According to HSE, development teams were under time pressure to get the portal up and running to meet the vaccination campaign timeline. The latest blog from DigitSec (https://lnkd.in/gzjBKdEn) discussed why securing code for Salesforce applications is critical in the healthcare industry. These types of breaches validate the necessity for cybersecurity and development teams to work together to identify vulnerabilities and mitigate risk. This is a classic example of how threat actors exploit vulnerabilities to exfiltrate valuable PII and place users at risk. Ireland's National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) is tasked with managing healthcare wait times and enhancing patient access to treatment. Faced with a challenge of consolidating vast, fragmented healthcare data, the NTPF needed a more effective way to provide visibility into patient queues, facilitate better decision-making, and improve accountability across the healthcare sector. To address these issues, NTPF partnered with Spanish Point Technologies and Microsoft to develop the Patient Access Management System (PAMS) using Power Platform. Since the launch in 2019, the number of patients managed through PAMS has grown from 30,000 to over 160,000 - with a significant reduction in patient waiting times. Looking forward, NTPF aims to expand this data solution across more healthcare facilities in Ireland, further strengthening the country's healthcare infrastructure. With the impending release of Microsoft’s Recall feature a tool that continuously captures screenshots and uploads them to the cloud the tech giant has inadvertently exposed a critical truth: there has never been comprehensive data security on their platform. Originally slated for release in May 2024, then postponed to October, and now scheduled for December, the delay points to privacy and security concerns. But this isn’t just about a delayed software launch; it’s about the implications of Microsoft’s unrestricted access to user data and, ultimately, the vulnerability users have been subjected to all along. In recent years, Microsoft has faced significant scrutiny over its data security practices, with several high-profile breaches raising concerns about the company's ability to protect sensitive information. Notably, in January 2024, Russian state-sponsored hackers, identified as Midnight Blizzard, compromised Microsoft's corporate email accounts, including those of senior leadership and cybersecurity teams. The attackers employed password-spraying techniques to gain access, and the breach remained undetected for approximately two months, highlighting vulnerabilities in Microsoft's security protocols. Similarly, in July 2023, Chinese hackers known as Storm-0558 exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft's Azure cloud service, accessing email accounts of U.S. government officials. The attackers obtained a cryptographic key, allowing them to forge authentication tokens and access sensitive data Microsoft. These incidents underscore systemic issues within Microsoft's security infrastructure.Despite these challenges, Microsoft continues to expand its operations. In November 2024, the company announced the creation of 550 new engineering and R&D jobs in Ireland, focusing on AI and cybersecurity development. While this investment aims to bolster innovation, it raises questions about the company's commitment to addressing existing security flaws before pursuing new technological advancements. A couple of weeks ago, as Chair I had the privilege of speaking at the 32nd Technology Ireland Awards. I spoke about some of the priorities that should be discussed for the next Programme for Government. It was and is an honour to witness the innovation and drive of those working in the Irish technology sector. Long may it continue! These qualities will soon be crucial in addressing the challenges and questions that lie ahead, including; ➡️Global uncertainty, both economically and politically.  ➡️How AI is reshaping how we work and the need for businesses to adapt quickly.  ➡️Restrictive EU regulations that hinder the growth and success of tech companies. The next Programme for Government needs to outline a path to navigate through these and many other challenges. For these reasons, among others, are why Ireland must take a proactive lead in shaping current and future regulations. Collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators will be crucial as the landscape evolves. My hope is that we can align on what is possible and drive meaningful change for Ireland’s growing technology sector.  I’d love to hear your thoughts and start a conversation around these topics. I really enjoyed sharing some insights on the evolution of digital transformation to where we are today with the promise of #GenAI at the Dublin Tech Summit. GenAI has the potential to help businesses large and small focus move away from the drudgery of routine tasks to focus on core business objectives. It was great to learn more about the FoReSight Framework https://lnkd.in/e4gTj5yZ and it shows how collaborative efforts across industry, academia and with crucial regulatory (HPRA) review can lead the way to better patient outcomes and reliable decision making. I'm sure there will be plenty more questions on the Framework and how it responds to emerging digital technologies.

Irish businesses are yet to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) tools and systems at a scale large enough to create significant value for their organisations, a new KPMG study has indicated, despite eagerness among senior leaders to adopt the technology.

Thursday School: Hidden in Plain Sight Mk III! This week’s #FYUZ24 was held in the redeveloped Docklands – or rather Smart Docklands! – area of Dublin. While a lot of focus has been upon the connected street furniture there, no less care has been taken over the rooftops. On buildings overlooking the Liffey the macro antennas are hidden behind GRP cylinders designed to mimic chimney flues. In addition to being accurately colour matched to the buildings, the curved faces reflect less in any one direction reducing their visibility. While the extra material will have a minor impact upon the signal, there is already a similar material forming a watertight enclosure around the antenna elements and waveguides, so this a tried and tested material technology. There will of course be a cost to this cloaking, however there are also legal and programme costs for any protracted discussions and arguments with local authority planning teams, so net costs may be modest.
