For my final year design project at the University of Limerick I design a hoist to allow the safe, discreet and comfortable entry to swimming pools by people of all mobility levels including those in wheelchairs. The design subsequently went on to win the Irish James Dyson Award 2011.

The Open pool transfer gives people of all mobility levels a safe, comfortable and dignified way of transferring from pool to water, easily and effortlessly controlled by either the user themselves or an assistant. The unique two stage lowering motion gives the user only as much help as they need and removes any anxiety The user transfers onto the seat. Once comfortable and secure they use the inbuilt armrest controls to lower the seat into the water. Facing parallel to the pool wall as they are lowered letting them fully see the device itself and the pool wall, resulting in a greater feeling of safety and an improved overall experience. The lift lowers the user down to deck level first, so they are sitting at the side of the pool allowing them to test the water, adjust goggles etc and is similar to the way most people enter the pool The Open pool transfer is a complete solution which can be positioned anywhere on the pool deck and includes armrests footrests and remote lifeguard control
