I am deeply saddened and, frankly, disheartened by the government's decision to withdraw funding from the NDRC, Ireland's most established tech accelerator. At a time when countries around the world are accelerating their efforts to compete in the global AI race, this move feels like we're not even making an effort to reach the starting line. The NDRC has played a pivotal role in supporting early-stage startups, helping them get off the ground and scale, while also providing invaluable resources to others further along in their journey. The accelerator has fostered a vibrant community, thanks in no small part to the passionate leadership of Patrick Walsh, Ian Browne, Menno Axt, and Lorraine E. Curham, who have created a strong network for startups across Ireland. By cutting this essential support, we send a concerning message about Ireland’s long-term commitment to innovation and competitiveness on a global stage. How can we expect to retain talent and foster innovation without resources like the NDRC? I strongly urge the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications to carefully reconsider the long-term impact of this decision and how it will inevitably force many startups to find supports elsewhere. Bank holidays and sunny days might be rare here, in Ireland! But Howth Arbour always delivers with its calm scenes and all memories. It's not just the weather. It's about the nostalgic trips through my life, like movies in my head, as I look out over the harbour. I can see myself years back, lost, arriving in this beautiful country only with a backpack and savings 😣 One challenge in my head! Get a job in the tech industry! How?? I only have the leaving certificate. I quit my job to move to another country and have 0 network to help me. I was feeling lonely until I discovered Howth. Then, from my first winter here, enjoying a hot bowl of seafood chowder, to summer treats of Fish and Chips, this place became more than a scenic spot. Every visit here, no matter the season, brings back memories of my early days in Ireland and brings me closer to my dreams. Irish Tech Update August 2024 📰 Cork-based LegitFit raises €1.7M to support its UK expansion and is hiring engineers with Node, Typescript, and React experience. Dublin-based Drive Inc. acquired by Nasdaq-listed ACV Auctions, reflecting strong exit opportunities for Irish tech startups. Irish Government allocates €250M for early-stage start-ups through the Seed and Venture Capital Scheme to support innovation in various sectors. CroiValve secures $16M in Series B funding to advance its heart valve treatment device, aiming to expand its specialist workforce. Dublin-based MIXRIFT raises $1.6M in pre-seed funding to accelerate mixed reality gaming development for headsets like Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro. As can be expected August was a slower news month but expect things to ramp up through the rest of the year! Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston reveals the secret behind Stripe’s meteoric rise, and it all starts with relentless determination 👇😳 Before it became one of the world’s most valuable private tech companies, Stripe was just a long shot founded by 19-year-old Patrick Collison and his then-16-year-old brother, John. When they pitched Y Combinator, Jessica Livingston remembers thinking, “Do you realize how hard this is? You don’t have connections.” Yet the Collisons wouldn’t take no for an answer. “We’ll find connections,” they said. And they did. According to Livingston, determination is by far the top ingredient for startup success: “Determination is the most important thing. Understanding your users and building a product with a great user experience is second most important.” The Collisons embodied this mantra, refusing to let youth or inexperience hold them back. They immersed themselves in the financial industry, learning whatever they needed to fill the gaps. But while a great product lays the foundation, the real differentiator often comes down to persuasion: “You are going to be convincing employees to join you. You’re going to be convincing investors to invest in you. When you do deals with bigger companies, you have to convince them. Your whole world is convincing people.” This isn’t just about charming speeches. It’s about communicating your product’s value so clearly that people immediately grasp why it matters. That’s why Steve Jobs famously declared the storyteller to be the most powerful person in the world. Because it all comes down to how well you can make others believe in your vision. Sharing my experience from the Innovate Panel at the Philanthropy Ireland Symposium! What an inspiring session filled with fresh perspectives on giving back and making a real difference. The panel featured three remarkable philanthropists who are truly revolutionizing the field: Tom Clinch, MD of Clinch Wealth Management, shared fascinating insights on blending the worlds of finance and arts philanthropy. His approach to viewing philanthropic contributions as investments with social returns was eye-opening12. Louise McElvaney of Learning Pool demonstrated how corporate culture can be a powerful force for good. People are hyping questing on Galxe & Zeal which is great for a Web3 audience. But are sleeping on traditional Web2 distribution channels. 2️⃣ Digital Collectibles as the Free Engagement funnel and Monitise the Long Tail Kurt Pittman : Web3 should be the free engagement fabric to build next-gen fan engagement and look to monetize the long tail down the line. We have moved on from 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗹𝘆 monetizing Web3 Sport at the point of sale. Had an opportunity to talk with Dan Currell at DCA about the future of card-linked offers. The idea of providing meaningful and relevant offers to consumers based on their purchase history is awesome, but not if high friction prevents the offers from ever being used. Financial institutions deliver billions of merchant-funded offers a year, but the vast majority go unseen and unused. That's why we built our SmartOffers Platform, to make it easy for consumers to engage with offers. They save, the merchants find their best customers and the financial institutions get transaction fees and ad revenue. It's a win-win-win. Since the US Digital Advertising spending forecast for 2024 is projected to be $300B according to Statista, there's a lot of potential for merchant-funded card-linked offers, if they just get a little smarter.
