It is expected that the company will begin to make staff redundant from the middle of June 2028, with the last workers leaving in December. "Declining demand has resulted in underutilization of our production capacities," a spokesperson for the business said. In 2020, Viatris announced the closure of a plant in Baldoyle with the loss of 440 jobs. Ireland offers an ecosystem that encompasses innovation, focuses on talent, and is committed to supporting client sustainability and digital transformation. New centres of excellence such as Digital Manufacturing Ireland, have been established by the Irish Government to assist Irish-based manufacturers in rapidly adopting digital technologies to transform their value chains.    MedTech exports from Ireland are worth more than €13bn a year – 8% of the country’s total exports. Exciting news for Abbott! Medical device company Abbott has opened a new manufacturing facility in Kilkenny which is is set to create more than 800 jobs. The Kilkenny facility is part of a €440 million investment in Ireland, which also includes a major expansion at the company’s Donegal site, adding another 200 jobs. Spanning 30,000 square meters, the Kilkenny site will become the world’s largest production hub for Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre sensors. Thanks to Ibec for organising the IBEC Mid West HR Forum in Limerick yesterday. It was a highly informative event with valuable insights on current HR challenges and legislations. Special thanks to the speakers and panellists; Fiona Higgins Keevagh Heverin Vicky O'Neill Sinead Mullins Liam Linehan. MBA, FCIPD. There were many takeaways from the event, including: 1. Engagement Levels: A recent Gallup Survey highlighted the importance of focusing on engagement improvements within businesses in Ireland. 2. Human Energy Crisis: A Mercer 2023 report indicates an increase in burnout rates, emphasising the need for enhanced wellbeing initiatives and supports. 3. Employee Value Proposition: Employers need to evaluate their benefits: pay, pensions, wellbeing, flexible work options, and actively listen to employee feedback. 4. Untapped Recruitment Markets: Identify and leverage untapped recruitment markets such as people on careers or disability leave. 5. Change: Be agile, adaptive and collaborative. If you strive for perfection other businesses will pass you out.

Gardaí have raised concerns drug traffickers could set up their own laboratories in Ireland to manufacture synthetic opioids given the dramatic changes in the drug market. Sources point out that Ireland has already seen the emergence of new substances, including nitazene, a super-strong synthetic opioid, in the last year — with mass outbreaks across country — and, earlier this month, synthetic benzodiazepines in Portlaoise Prison. The increased supply of synthetic opioids into Europe is being linked with the almost complete collapse of opium production in Afghanistan last year as a result of a 2022 ban by the extremist Taliban regime. This has meant the supply of heroin into Europe is largely coming from stockpiles, with authorities unsure as to when those stores will run out. UN and EU drug agencies are concerned drug traffickers will turn to synthetic opioids to fill much of the market in Europe. "It the diversification of drug trafficking networks and is the future challenge,” a Garda source said. “It's very difficult to deal with. Labs will be set up everywhere and Ireland is not immune.” EU drug agencies are concerned at the potential spread of nitazenes, including any move to start manufacturing the drug in Europe given the presence of drug laboratories on the continent. The EU police agency Europol on Friday released details of an operation by Polish and Ukrainian authorities which uncovered a massive synthetic opioid laboratory network. Police, assisted by Europol, raided seven linked labs and seized 195kgs of "crystal methadone", a substance that European sources told the Irish Examiner has not been seen within the EU. It is thought this substance may have been for the Ukraine market. Methadone is prescribed in the treatment of heroin addiction in Ireland, but illegal crystal methadone is far more powerful. Polish police also uncovered 153kgs of Alpha-PVP, used in the production of mephedrone, a synthetic cathinone, a popular stimulant drug. The operation came as a drug-testing service in Britain, Mandrake, which is attached to Manchester Polythetic University, said the current illicit drugs market “has never been more dangerous” and cited the circulation of “extremely dangerous pills” containing nitazenes.
