Meta on Wednesday announced the creation of an AI advisory council with only white men on it. What else would we expect? We will be taught to trust LLM's and never question our new black box overlords. The power will reside in the hands of a few big companies and goverments. Google's algorithm was more secret than the recipe for Coca Cola. We just had to accept that what Google gave us was the best answer, no questions asked or you would be de-ranked. Social media gave companies like Meta the chance to use algorithms to give us a red pill or blue pill and feed us whatever social response they deemed we needed to maintain our attention. .e make us happy, sad or angry. And if you answer back or question them, then you are shadow-banned or worse just simply banned. AI using secretive LLM's will be trained to give us the answers they want but now on steroids. Two people using the same AI prompt will be given a different answer based on criteria we will never know about. Digital Apartheid is a possibility. All the "ism's" today are now being programmed into LLM's of the future overseen by a council white men to ensure they stay on top of the social pyramid. William Gibson once said "The future is here it's just unevenly distributed [because its controlled by the rich elite]" Nothing says progress like repeating the mistakes of the past. This really has been the year that the access to AI for a significant proportion of people really did start to change the world. I'm a huge fan of media organisations who bring together the digital and human experience in incredible ways.... Friday Talking Points - Politics & Comms, AI-Tech Storytelling & Higher Education. I rarely do politics on this platform, given my background as a former General Election producer for Channel 4, but what about the PMs pushback interview on leaving D-Day commemorations early? What I want to know is what was Comms doing, and foreign Sec David Cameron, in the decision-making? This week's news that Sony will be using AI in future projects bode bad news for VFX, visualisers, but good news for indies looking at Gen AI to create where resources are a challenge. https://lnkd.in/eF_2Rwq7 From my experience over the last 34 years in innovation, storytelling and journalism, AIs shake up to content creation is going to be colossal, and relatively very few outlets are taking it seriously, particularly when it comes to non-fiction production. As I was talking to a senior Ghanaian exec y'day, there's also legitimate fears over AI going rogue in our high stakes capitalist economies, low on regulation and policy. It's not just jobs that it'll cost people. Next month I'll be presenting work at a tech storytelling gathering. Honoured to know I'm one of twenty academics in the country to be invited. I believe any university course in content creation should be addressing this, and I'm pleased our Masters students and their feedback recognises this, with comments about how it's helped them. I've strong views from academic papers and archive about the difficulties for current messaging. Recently I was asked by a leading EU funder to review a hight cost proposal to create a D&I platform. I commended it, but saw within it a perennial issue around legacy, and the erosion of D&I initiatives. What's required is deeper collaboration, and how structural inequality have become strategically conventionalised over the years. Interesting first day at Learning Technologies Exhibition & Conference and I’m looking forward to more provocations and conversations today. AI is stealing the headlines but not much is being said here about where that will take an industry built on content. AI will do it quicker, cheaper etc. That’s a burning platform and we need to look beyond learning as content. And where and how does personalised and adaptive learning sit with organisational learning and creating a culture of knowledge sharing? Let’s see what day two brings …. #lt24uk

In an era where AI is increasingly used to curate and deliver content, the challenge of governing what audiences see is more pressing than ever. The R&D team at PurpleMedia is looking at the power of AI to enhance digital learning, but we also recognise the inherent risks. AI’s ability to disseminate information at lightning speed raises concerns about the spread of misinformation. Algorithms prioritise engagement, but they don’t inherently understand context or intent. This often leads to the amplification of misleading or biased content. The difficulty lies in finding a balance, how do we harness the efficiency of AI while ensuring the information delivered is trustworthy and accurate? One of the key issues is the opacity of these algorithms. How does an AI decide what content should be shown to whom? Without transparency, we risk creating echo chambers or promoting harmful information unintentionally. This becomes even more complex in e-learning, where trust in the accuracy and relevance of content is critical for both learners and educators. Governance is crucial, but it’s no easy task. Should tech companies, governments, or content creators bear the responsibility for regulating AI’s output? How do we create guidelines that ensure AI serves the public good without stifling innovation? At Purple Media, we believe the solution lies in collaboration. We must combine the intelligence of AI with human oversight. AI can process and analyse vast amounts of data, but humans must guide it, providing the ethical framework that machines lack. One of the themes that came across for me at LeadDev London this year was the power of storytelling. It's not one of our strong points in the tech community as we tend to fall back on facts and figures over thoughts and feelings - it's probably why we liked tech in the first place a bit more predictable. But the thing about stories is that we connect with them so much more than facts. A good story can engage people in ways facts don't. Working as a Principal Tester (Staff+ role) means I often have to influence groups without any authority, so finding better ways to communicate my ideas is essential. Storytelling is one of the many skills that could help in this regard. Another aspect of Staff+ roles is that taking ownership of your personal development is crucial. This means actively seeking opportunities to improve your skills and knowledge rather than relying solely on your managers or organisation. In this vein, I'll share more posts as I hone my storytelling skills. 📚To start, I've been using YouTube's algorithms to get it to offer me a TED-Talk-A-Day (which I usually watch every few days) on talks around storytelling. 📕 This one from Donald Davis helped me see how his dad was able to reframe what had happened to him when he was younger and use it to make him who he was rather than what he could have been. All through how his mother (Donald's grandmother) got his father to tell the story of what happened when he was young. Now, Donald could have just told us what you think about what happened to you can make a big difference in how you approach life. Instead, he tells the story about his father, which helps you remember and understand the details in a way that simply telling you never would. 🥡 What a great example of show, don't tell, but also of how you must own your narrative, or they will own you. Black and black Irish artists have more ineligible arts funding applications than any other ethnic group (and I am not surprised).... Yesterday I went to the launch of the report "Open up" by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, on research commissioned by Lucy Michael Research Training & Consultancy, and to say the least, the robust research and the conversations just confirmed things our community already knew. It's not a lack of talent, not a lack of creativity, not a lack of new innovative ideas ... in my opinion, its a lack of intercultural pathways and engagement, ie access to networks who can support applications from the Black/African community, lack of migrant/black-led creative organisations where leaders deeply understand experiences, among others. One thing that struck me in the research was that black women were more likely than black men to get arts funding, but the caveat was that women were more likely to apply when they were later in their career (aka already established/excelled). Something that I personally am unlearning in my anti-racism journey is my former motto of "be so good that they cannot say no", embedding the idea that I had to work way harder than others to be seen and heard, little did I know that this could be partially rooted in systemic racism and something black women continually face in professional settings. And while on some level it worked, and my career is growing faster than I expected, it has led to burnout and over-productivity (yes, I am learning now how to slow down). The report just reminded me of why organisations like GORM need to exists, and we are proud to be an Arts Council Funded organisation, to not only provide programming for such communities, but does so in a way that is culturally sensitive. PODCASTS AS PORTFOLIOS Here, I made this! Podcasters create a body of work they can point to. It remains available and accessible far longer than most posts and outlasts the attention of Instagram etc. I am always amazed and delighted at how many episodes from my back catalogue are listened to each week. This is a great return on investment of time and effort. It also suggests we should make every episode the best we can, since it may be around for a while. How do we start? How do we keep going? Fascinating topic and one I am deeply interested in. Many that know me, know that I have a somewhat ‘morbid fascination’ with VR/ XR and its applications for immortalising the mortal. Conversations I had this time last year explored ideas that seemed out of reach at the time. However as the technology sharpens the use of technology in this way is becoming more of a reality and I see I’m not the only one with an interest in these kinds of applications. This article is behind a paywall but highlights how digital media literacy is essential for addressing the moral and ethical questions that arise when using such technology. I think this conversation will only grow in the coming years and it’s definitely one that has developed deeper on a personal level as I navigate anticipatory grief in my own life. What if you could inform your legacy avatar/virtual hologram etc. in advance and shape your narrative for future generations? What if instead of looking at a photograph or a film clip of a deceased person, you could meet them and talk with them? & What defines a ‘real’ experience if the real experience is a virtually perceived one?

This session on leveraging AI for better coding sounds incredibly valuable! I've already registered and am really looking forward to attending tonight. I'm eager to learn the top 10 ways AI can be used to write better code, and I'm especially interested in seeing the real-world examples from LingoWise. It's not every day you get to hear from an expert like Liz and get specific prompting suggestions to maximize the benefits of AI in coding. I'm sure this talk will be impressive and insightful. A thoughtful and well researched piece on the increasing alienation of some young men pushed towards extreme views like those espoused by Andrew Tate. The role of social media algorithms from an Irish study really stood out for me. These companies need to be held to account. They are publishers and should be held to the same standard as other media companies, let alone act as responsible members of society. Banning <16 year olds won’t fix this issue.
