A predicted 56,000 people will be employed in the fast-growing Medtech sector in Ireland, by 2028 - many of them in Regulatory Affairs, which will need to adapt for new areas such as smart devices and the AI Act, and market disruption from evolving MDR and IVDR directives and regulations. Today, we are launching our latest whitepaper ‘Where next for MedTech – Key considerations for the factory of the future’. Last Friday, we attended Medtech Rising 2024 for the second year in a row. Medtech Rising is the leading conference and awards ceremony for the Irish MedTech industry. The daytime event brought together 34+ speakers across 9 inspiring sessions, covering the hottest topics from across the #Medtech industry. Below are some of our key takeaways from the event: 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 This panel discussion highlighted the need for simpler and streamlined EU regulatory frameworks. These reforms aim to lower costs, boost global competitiveness, and ensure patient access to cutting-edge devices. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 As expected, #sustainability took centre stage, with discussions around eco-conscious practices in product design, manufacturing, and supply chains. The challenge? Balancing environmental responsibility with regulatory and cost considerations. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 Innovations in (Internet of Things)#IoT-driven healthcare, including real-time monitoring, diagnostics, and data analytics, are set to redefine patient care. These technologies promise improved outcomes and a revolution in healthcare delivery. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 #Digitisation was highlighted as vital to keeping Ireland competitive on the global MedTech stage. A strong focus was placed on adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, such as #robotics, #AI, and #automation, to enhance manufacturing efficiency. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 Ireland remains a hub for medical device R&D, thanks to its vibrant ecosystem of startups, universities, and established companies. Collaborative efforts are fuelling the creation of next-generation technologies. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Addressing skill gaps is essential to future-proofing the industry. Strong focus was placed on training and educational partnerships to ensure Ireland’s workforce can meet the demands of a digital and innovative Medtech landscape. The evening awards program was a great celebration of industry leaders. Although we didn’t take home the award this year, it was an incredible honour to be recognised alongside such outstanding companies. Congratulations to Freudenberg Medical for their well-deserved win in the Partner/Supplier of the Year Category! Building Momentum in Vision Technology   Digital Manufacturing Ireland (DMI) and Boston Scientific proudly hosted the kick-off meeting for the Visual Cognitive Manufacturing Group (VCMG) collaboration group, focusing on the Qualification of Automated Vision Inspections.   With close to 100 participants joining virtually, the session demonstrated the power of addressing critical industry challenges and the value of collaborative efforts in driving adoption of vision systems.   Highlights from the kick-off meeting: > Introduced the VCMG mission to advance vision systems in manufacturing. > Explored challenges for validating AI and machine vision systems including tackling compliance, validation, and a lack of industry examples. > Engaged participants to shape future discussions, ensuring an industry-driven and collaborative approach. > Shared plans for quarterly virtual meetings and an annual face-to-face event to deepen engagement.   The VCMG aims to position Ireland as a global leader in vision technology for manufacturing, fostering partnerships between academia, industry, and tech innovators.   Interested in joining this journey? According to a new report from The DHC Group, a research and analytics company that brings together life sciences leaders and others interested in digital innovation in healthcare, 83% of healthcare providers surveyed agreed that home diagnostics “help move patients more quickly through the care continuum.” At RT MicroDx, we couldn’t agree more. As we contemplate musical chairs with the Irish weather this summer it’s sometimes hard to grasp the full impact of global heating. Timely research from the ERSI provides analysis on the impact on public health from rising global temperatures which is stark reading for anyone involved in Irish health care.  The study correlated Met Éireann data with hospitalisation figures which showed spikes in admissions on hot days for patients with circulatory, respiratory and infectious diseases, and amongst younger people (14 years and under).  With many of our national health systems already under considerable pressure, can we afford to put extra climate-related burden on our hospitals and health care providers, not to mention the impact on 1,000s of people with serious health conditions? FIRE1 , an Irish medtech company which is working to improve outcomes for heart failure patients, has raised $120 million (€115 million) in new financing. The company, which is led by Conor Hanley, has taken on four new investors, Polaris Partners and ELEVATE MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES led the raise,with Sands Capital and Longitude Capital also joining the cap table. Existing investors - Andera Partners, Gilde Healthcare, Gimv, the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund, Lightstone Ventures, Medtronic, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Novo Holdings, and Seventure Partners, also all returned to bak the medtech firm
