This week, we launched the Huawei Digital Business Index in collaboration with Amárach Research—a new quarterly report designed to shine a light on the digitalisation trends shaping Irish business. The Huawei Digital Business Index acts as a digital pulse check, capturing insights from 350 business leaders across diverse sectors and sizes. As we close out 2024 and look towards 2025, these findings give a powerful perspective on where Ireland’s digital transformation journey stands. This week eir published its first ever Economic and Social Impact Report which highlights eir's role in supporting a digitally inclusive Ireland. The ESI report, conducted by Professor Anthony Foley, highlights that eir has invested almost €1.7 billion in telecommunications infrastructure in the last six years. This investment is playing a key role in enabling Ireland to become one of the most digitally connected countries in Europe. In addition, eir has today announced a further €500 million of capital investment by the company to expand its fibre network across Ireland, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing nationwide connectivity and supporting the Government's ambition of achieving universal Gigabit fibre coverage. Today's investment announcement will strongly support the achievement of eir's 1.9 million premises Gigabit fibre ambition, and underlines eir's commitment to ensuring the nation's telecoms infrastructure develops to be best in class in Europe. #proud #eirforall #connectingireland

A new report shows that Huawei makes an €800m economic contribution to Ireland annually. The report by Amárach reveals that Huawei employs 543 people in Ireland. It also supports the employment of a further 6,100 people through indirect (3,170) and induced (2,949) effects from its activities which include significant research and development. Huawei have four offices across the country including three R&D centres in Dublin, Cork, and Athlone. Since its arrival here in 2004, Huawei's activities have developed from supplying mobile dangles and building Ireland's first national fixed wireless network, to powering the country's digital connectivity and its green energy ambitions. According to today's report, Huawei will contribute €4.5 billion in economic value to Ireland between now and 2030, with the potential for this figure to be bigger.

Today, Torlach Denihan, Director of Telecommunications Industry Ireland, called for policies that strengthen the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and address blockages in the planning process. “Modern telecommunications infrastructure is the backbone of Ireland's digital future and growth. Delays in project approvals not only impact our competitiveness but also limit society’s access to high-quality, reliable services. Local authorities must be given the resources and a mandate to prioritise licence applications and approvals for fibre and mobile telecommunication infrastructure build and installation. Reforming the outdated 1996 planning guidelines for masts, in light of significant technological progress, and clearing the current appeal backlog at An Bord Pleanála must be top priorities for the next government.”   Other recommended policy priorities for the next government include: 📈 Foster a regulatory environment that encourages investment and network development. 🔒 Ensure adequate resources for implementation of the Electronic Communications Security Measures Regulations and NIS2 Directive and that an appropriate and proportionate approach is adopted, permitting adequate time and consultation for compliance. 📲 Provide public funding for a fit for purpose cell broadcast mobile public warning system as done in Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, and the UK. 📡 Extend the length of spectrum licences to encourage investment by providing greater certainty for investors. 💼 Extend the Trading Online Voucher Scheme to include SME take-up of very high-capacity networks (fibre and 5G FWA). 🚨 Allocate additional funding to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau to combat fraudulent calls and text messages to consumers. 🌊 Increase the security of Ireland’s subsea cables through EU-aligned, multiannual funding. Last week, eir published its first Economic and Social Impact Report, underscoring the pivotal role it plays in promoting digital inclusion across Ireland. According to the EU Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index, Ireland ranks third in internet usage, with 95% of households connected. However, when it comes to broadband speed, there’s room for improvement—Ireland currently ranks 16th, with only half of households reaching speeds of 100Mbps or more. Our open eir network is already available to over 1.3 million homes and businesses and we are on track to pass 84% of the country. The path ahead is clear: accelerating the transition to fibre, future-proofing connectivity, and ensuring that Ireland remains at the forefront of the digital economy. Ireland's telecoms regulator, ComReg, continues to make significant strides in reducing the depth of telecoms-related information asymmetries facing Irish consumers, building on the launch of the first-of-its-kind mobile coverage map some years ago with an innovative new "Broadband Checker" platform that centralises data relating to fixed network availability for the first time. The development is a principal output of ComReg's compliance with the obligations prescribed under the EU's European Electronic Communications Code (EECC), which has compelled regulators to "conduct a geographical survey of the reach of electronic communication networks capable of delivering broadband" and make available "information tools for end-users". It forms part of the regulator's broader strategy of enhancing its credentials as a single source of independent information for mobile and broadband services among Irish consumers, realised through the progressive expansion of its various service availability, price plan comparison and complaint resolution tools in recent years. The new "Broadband Checker" tool, accessible on ComReg's website, enables Irish consumers to determine the availability of fixed-line connectivity in different areas using an interactive map or Eircode search, with a level of detail and precision that has up until this point not been available to the public through a single, independent platform. The tool consolidates information about fixed network availability by operator (including National Broadband Ireland, open eir, SIRO and Virgin Media Ireland), best available product (FTTH, Cable, Part-Fibre/VDSL, etc.), rollout status (active, planned, etc.), maximum achievable download speed and expected peak time download speed. Further detail on the retail provider options is also provided. The launch of the platform dovetails with the evolving market trend of a rapid expansion of fibre overbuilds in urban and suburban areas in Ireland, with consumers finding themselves at the centre of several concurrent fibre builds as operators migrate from copper and cable and seek expanded market share. In the last quarter, #FTTH accounted for 43% of all active fixed broadband lines in the state, with almost half of all broadband lines now having download speeds of at least 500Mbps. FTTH (+33.51%) and satellite (+114.22%) are the only broadband platforms enjoying sustained double-digit annual subscriber growth in Ireland, with FWA (+4.05%) trailing considerably despite much industry hype. The dominance of open eir's FTTH footprint is significant - it accounted for more than 60% of all active FTTH subscriber lines in the last quarter, followed by SIRO (~25.18%), NBI (~10.55%) and Virgin Media (~4.08%).

Shaping Our Electricity Future Roadmap Shaping Our Electricity Future Roadmap was prepared by EirGrid and SONI (Northern Ireland grid operator) in consultation with stakeholders across society, government, industry, market participants and electricity consumers. Shaping Our Electricity Future Roadmap provides an outline of the key developments to support a transition to a net zero by 2050. This Roadmap draws on an extensive public and industry engagement in the first half of 2021. It identifies the network reinforcements needed to manage a fundamentally different generation fleet, new technologies and demand growth. The Roadmap is based on consultation and studies spanning across transmission networks, stakeholder engagement, power system operation and electricity markets with the aim of developing an integrated vision of the 2030 power system and electricity markets for Ireland and Northern Ireland. A detailed review of the public and industry consultation feedback, combined with EirGrid and SONI analysis of electricity grid, system operations provided the following insights relating to the role of Energy Communities.in the future roadmap. There was strong support for the connection of micro-generation from communities across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Communities are eager to get involved in this aspect of the electricity system and believe micro-generation should have a relatively significant role in attaining at least 70% renewables. There was strong support for community ownership of renewables and that communities should be supported and incentivised to develop community owned renewable projects. Many stakeholders believed a community-led approach to renewable project development would provide significant community benefit, support acceptance of energy infrastructure and demonstrate a grassroots contribution to achieving climate action targets. However, stakeholders strongly communicated that systems need to be put in place to foster and encourage ideas in this area. There was repeated reference to the need for rural communities to share in any economic upturn as a result of the implementation of a roadmap with major Renewable Ambition. This includes balancing the infrastructure modelling across the island, encouraging large energy users to locate in regional cities and balance the requirement of offshore and onshore generation, in order to sustain jobs and investment. Nice post from Paul Deane. It's good to be reminded of Ireland's long-term trends in energy consumption. Our consumption has more than doubled in the past three decades...but our use of renewables has also filled a lot of that increased need, as has gas and, since the early 2000s, electricity imports.
