Tackling Tick Troubles: Insights and Impacts of Lyme Disease in Ireland The rising prevalence of tick-borne infections (TBIs) is a growing concern in Ireland. A recent study investigated the types of TBIs, their symptoms, and the effectiveness of combination antibiotic treatments in a large patient cohort. Among 301 patients, 46.51% tested positive for TBIs, with the majority infected by Borrelia. The study found that combination antibiotics significantly reduced pain and neurological symptoms, demonstrating good patient tolerance and effectiveness in alleviating TBI symptoms. Further research focused on clinical biomarkers in 110 patients before and after antibiotic treatment. Initially, patients had low counts of several immune cells, including CD3%, CD3+ cells, and CD4+ helper cells. Post-treatment, most of these counts improved, highlighting the potential of standard clinical markers in assisting TBI diagnosis. However, CD8+ counts showed no notable progress, indicating the need for more research on immune responses to TBIs. Pain is a common and debilitating symptom of TBIs, particularly in patients with post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS). An Irish hospital study explored the relationship between pain and biomarkers in TBI patients before and after antibiotic treatment. Pain ratings significantly decreased post-treatment, suggesting persistent infections responsive to antibiotics. Although some biomarkers were correlated with pain ratings, they did not directly predict pain changes. This finding underscores the importance of appropriate antibiotic treatment and the human rights implications of withholding pain relief. Beyond the health impacts, TBIs also impose a significant economic burden. A study estimated the prevalence and cost of Chronic Lyme Disease (CLD) in Ireland, revealing an annual cost of 40,699 EUR per patient and a national total of 305.24 million EUR. Timely detection and treatment of Lyme disease can reduce these costs and prevent long-term complications. The study called for enhanced training for general practitioners and increased awareness among policymakers about the impact of Lyme disease, comparing its prevalence to that of the COVID-19 pandemic. By synthesizing these studies, it is evident that Lyme disease and other TBIs pose significant health and economic challenges in Ireland. In March 2024, Applied Biopharm Consulting received funding from Local Enterprise Office Cork North and West to conduct a feasibility study to evaluate the engineering of viral capsids and related molecules. This research used artificial intelligence combined with advanced computational tools to develop and validate Applied Dock™ technology. Looking ahead to 2025, our ongoing R&D efforts will focus on experimentally evaluating the integration of novel high-affinity binding motifs targeting a specific muscle receptor. ALS Community, Scientists and Researchers - Look out! At Axol Bioscience we continue to build tools, infrastructure and assays that support “Better Human Disease Modeling” decrease time and risk of Drug Discovery in ALS and ultimately improve patients lives. Massive THANK-YOU to the Scottish Government for their continued support of Axol Bioscience through the awarding of this SMART Grant. The key objectives of this project are to: 1. Develop a quality manufacturing system for iPSC-derived ALS relevant cell types 2. Characterise and validate the cells using ALS relevant end points; TDP43 aggregation, Neurofilament Light elevation and Cryptic Exon Sequencing 3. Develop and characterise an ALS co-culture model which includes motor neurons, microglia and astrocytes 4. Commercialise an easy-to-use model system to drive forward ALS drug discovery The grant is part of a broader push to scale the impact of Scotland’s innovation strengths, with a focus on projects that contribute to economic transformation. On Father's Day this year, I presented our work on NaNots at the superb Longevity Summit Dublin conference. Sticking around so I can enjoy and support friends and family is a big reason why I'm interested in longevity science. NaNots, the new class of medicine our company is developing, will have their initial application in FDA-recognized conditions like cancer and sepsis, but our scientists believe that the NaNot platform also has strong utility against core mechanisms of aging, some of which I describe in this talk. Kairos Biotech Ltd are pleased to announce they have received follow-on funding of €1m from Dutch entity EchiumBio Holding BV.   Kairos Biotech management comprises CEO & founder, Dr Mike Bunce, R&D director Ben Passey, Senior Scientist Hayley Hogan and Investor Director Dr Wietse Mulder.   The transaction was executed with legal support from Herke van Hulst and Angela Saldanha at Osborne & Clarke in Amsterdam and Catherine Williams from Keystone Law in London.    The follow-on investment came after the company achieved significant milestones in developing its novel molecules for transplant diagnostics and applications in targeted immunotherapy.   Our approach in transplantation   Successful kidney and other solid organ transplants need to avoid immunological rejection to succeed. Unfortunately, many patients have pre-formed anti-donor T and B cells that restrict the opportunities for transplant. Some patients may wait years for a transplant opportunity due to deleterious anti-donor immunological responses.    Kairos Biotech aims to improve transplant success by developing small molecules that are suitable for both improving diagnostics, and molecularly enhanced to modulate or remove immunological anti-donor responses. We will demonstrate that these ‘designer immunosuppressive molecules’ can interfere and remove the anti-donor responses in a highly-specific and possibly permanent way. This transplant tolerance is expected to be highly beneficial for the transplant of highly sensitized patients. This will enable shorter waiting times for transplant, and potentially improved transplant survival.
