💯👏🏼. BRAVO! This is like a "101" or "5 simple easy changes to your grant making practices with outsized impact" ie. that will promote and improve: quality of support provided, relationships, trust, performance, impact, quality, accountability, equity in partnerships, mutual respect and understanding, wellness and boost your "donor ratings score" based on grantee perceptions reporting! It sounds like common sense, but it still baffles me that the vast majority of donors do not listen, learn or think of these things, let alone fund them. The worst culprits are often the intermediaries, the INGOs and the NNGOs who squeeze the last mile implementing partner (the term alone speaks volumes about the mindset adopted) on cost recovery. At a Pledge4Change launch event in Nairobi I was shocked that INGOs who complain about their own insufficient cost recovery and cash flow, still have the old school practice of withholding a % of the sub-grant value to be paid pending final report submission and approval - which can take 3 months after project end. I thought donors and intermediaries were shamed out of that practice years ago! I've been in philanthropy and not living in the field for too long clearly - to see that the main players with all the $ haven't changed much at all in the last 10 years - despite all the promises and "commitments" 😞 There are changes happening though: and let's acknowledge them and raise them up when they do in an effort to keep hope alive and encourage them to keep improving and to encourage, persuade or peer-pressure other donors to improve their practices to be more grantee centred!

Recognising that poverty is multidimensional, we should know it is linked to other forms of disadvantage. This should inform all our Rural development work and must be evident in our values and policy priorities. Inevitably; we must tackle climate change, strengthen governance, address existing gender inequalities and reduce humanitarian need. There is also a spiritual angle to poverty!!!!

The AMR crisis is tied to a lack of clean WASH in communities and healthcare facilities. Shockingly, half of all healthcare facilities globally lack basic hygiene services. In the world's least developed countries, a woman gives birth every two seconds in a facility without adequate WASH. In Ghana, recent studies highlight critical WASH gaps. Ashinyo et al. (2021) found significant deficiencies in COVID-19 treatment centers. WaterAid's analysis in the Upper East region revealed 24% of facilities with interrupted water supply and only 48% with toilets. These issues persist due to insufficient funding, inadequate political commitment, weak monitoring, inadequate collaboration, and limited staff capacity. At the #WHA77 this week, WaterAid is advocating for urgent WASH improvements in healthcare facilities for all. Call for increased funding, stronger commitment from all governments, and enhanced collaboration to ensure safe, hygienic conditions for all. The absence of up-to-date and consistent #National Health Accounts (NHA) #data in #Malawi poses a significant #barrier to #effective #health sector #planning and #development. With Malawi's latest NHA #report dating back to the 2018/19 fiscal year, #policymakers are forced to rely on outdated #information, making it difficult to accurately #track health #resource flows, evaluate out-of-pocket payments, and implement equitable financing #strategies. Very interesting article from MZN on Innovative Finance. Failing the SDGs? Traditional grants are insufficient for achieving substantial impact and reaching the SDGs with only 6 years remaining!!! New perspective of donors or new 'donors'? Donors are shifting towards more sophisticated funding models like conditional and catalytic funding, which emphasize sustainability and scalability. Critical adaptation needed? NGOs must navigate a complex financial landscape, blending public and private funds to maximize impact and align the SDGs. Easy said but obviously so difficult to implement. Seems we (NGOs) have no choice but to adopt innovative finance strategies, including engaging with investors for their expertise and networks. Looking for a weekend read…. Evaluation of the Cultural Protection Fund ERS were commissioned to measure the impact of the Cultural Protection Fund’s first phase, which funded 51 projects between 2016 and 2020. ERS reviewed evaluation reports from all 51 projects, conducted surveys and interviews with grantees and other stakeholders, carried out a rapid literature review and produced an evaluation report detailing the impact of the fund in its first three years. The report sets out the context in which the fund operates and evaluates the successes and challenges of funded projects against the fund’s outcomes as well as other key areas such as effectiveness and value for money. Minimal progress on funding allocation to support the localisation agenda. Despite significant national policy commitments, in practice, GBV and SARV localisation have been minimal, with little national government own funding channelled to local organizations. Women-led local organisations were rarely allocated sufficient funding despite being recognised in policy commitments as key partners in GBV and SARV prevention and response, and little funding had been channelled to local organisations in general.
