Working with several pharma companies (all in the upper echelon of Veeva pioneers) twentyeightb (28b Ltd) has developed an MCCP companion workflow solution and launch communications programme that helps ensure MCCP is a success and is seen by the field team as something they want to use, rather than something they are told to use. Based in MyIsnights the tool shows real time progress and highlights performance enhancement opportunities to nudge the user to take the right actions to stay on track and deliver on their MCCP goals. AI in PV: Are We Really Seeing AI? 🤔   At the recent World Drug Safety Congress in Amsterdam, one topic kept coming up — AI. But is it really AI we're seeing in the #pharmacovigilance industry? The truth is, much of what’s being branded as "AI" is really just automation. ⚙️   In the highly regulated PV space, systems must comply with standards like GAMP, which require validation and strict version control. True AI, which evolves and learns on its own, can’t currently exist within these constraints because it would be difficult to validate. What we’re seeing is automation — efficient, yes, but not what we traditionally understand as AI. 🛠️   So why the buzz around AI? Are we too quick to label advancements as AI because it’s the trend, or are companies deliberately masking automation as AI? The reality is, under current regulations, what we call “real AI” isn’t actually permitted. That said, automation, when configured and used correctly, has significant value. It reduces errors, saves time, and streamlines repetitive tasks—allowing teams to focus on more strategic work. Automation can transform processes, improve compliance, and boost overall efficiency. It’s a powerful tool in its own right, and we should recognise its potential without mislabelling it as AI. 💡   So let’s not confuse people. Let’s be clear about what we’re implementing and embrace the benefits of automation for what it is.   What do you think? CHALLENGING, HARD, COLLABORATIVE ⭐️ As the year wraps up, I think about our ongoing fight for a treatment for Vicky’s eye disease. Being a #PatientAdvocate for a degenerative genetic disorder is tough, especially watching our kids lose their sight and struggle with daily tasks. There’s always that nagging question: Are we doing enough? Are we moving fast enough? 🎢This year has been a rollercoaster. The clinical trials announced two years ago are still on hold; both RDH12 gene therapy programs in Europe and the USA are stuck due to lack of funding. Even though the proof of concept for RDH12 gene therapy was published many years ago and these programs are broadly ready for clinical development, they lack financial support because of limited commercial returns. It’s heartbreaking to think that the #vials that could save our children’s sight are sitting unused…We are trying hard to work with program owners to move these therapies forward but haven’t found a way yet. But we keep trying! 🧫On a brighter note, we got unexpected news of the first clinical trials in China, using a different, less tested delivery method (intravitreal instead of the more proven subretinal). It’s not what we expected, but #progress can come in many forms! We also started a significant small molecule and repurposing screening at the Francis Crick Institute in London, fully funded by a generous grant from a family trust. 👫Knowing we’re not alone, we face common challenges and see the need for a new collaborative approach—we’ve strengthened #partnerships with organizations like LifeArc committed to rare diseases, and Retina International and showcased our case study at the Retina World Congress in Dublin in June to highlight common challenges. 📰Also this year, we spread our story wide in many ways! I’m honored to have been selected for the FasterCures Leaders Program by the Milken Institute (as the only European participant) and to have received nominations for the Inspiring Fifty in the UK and Italy, as well as the “Changed by Women” event at Università Bocconi in Italy. And how to forget the pinch-me moment of being featured in Forbes! ➡️Looking ahead to 2025, we will keep fighting! Working towards a #NewModel to bring rare disease therapies to patients—one that is patient-driven and more efficient. This model doesn’t aim for blockbuster drug returns but seeks ethical collaboration among stakeholders for a streamlined process. It doesn’t have to be so expensive or take so long. By embracing, among others, efficient manufacturing, patient-centered clinical trial designs, and using platform technologies or data-driven approaches, we can make a difference. And by the way this is not just going to help accelerate treatments for rare diseases but can pave the way to a future of personalized medicine… Thank you to everyone who has supported our journey. It’s the little things that can make a big difference - 5 top tips to improve your Medical Approval/Review experience! I was meeting a client for lunch earlier in the week at a local restaurant when I ordered a cup of tea.  Ireland is going through a cold snap at the moment so I really need to thaw out! ❄️ When the girl arrived with my pot of tea I noticed that there was steam rising from the empty cup.  I really appreciated the fact that someone had taken the time to heat my cup before I poured my tea.  It was such a small act and one I noticed because it was completely out of the ordinary. It got me thinking about the small things I really appreciated in Medical Affairs especially when I was working as a final signatory. Things like: 👉 Jobs being referenced properly which saved me time 👉 A clear job description, so I wasn’t having to follow up for more details 👉 A heads up on the timelines so I made sure I had plenty of time for review On the flipside there were small things I implemented that helped my relationship with those originating jobs: ⭐ Explaining why a job was being sent back rather than just an impersonal not approved email in the system. ⭐ Explaining my comments - so people understood the why and learnt what to do in future. ⭐ Providing a check list of what I was looking for in a job description and why (it’s not for kicks, it’s so it’s clear for auditors down the road). ⭐ Asking people what the intent of the job was so that a solution could be found. ⭐ Following up with an email or a call to talk through the job. The result - one of my biggest concerns in taking the role of final signatory, that I’d be seen as a blocker, never came to pass.  In fact, even when I shifted roles in working with the organisation people still approached me for advice with regards to material review.
