Enterprise Ireland to start writing bigger cheques to create <10,000-person Irish companies. Counterweight to Ireland’s dependence on multinationals? Has already written 38 cheques <€1m into firms last 20 months; now talking <€3m. Disburses around €320m a year, looks to make about €80m in yearly portfolio investment returns (Cubic Telecom etc). But with Ireland so dependent on FDI tax billions (a critical economic issue), the stakes are getting higher for indigenous firms. How can we help them grow faster and bigger? Because EI is so ingrained in early stage finance (Europe’s most active seed investor etc) there are *lots* of views about it — good and bad — some of which we touch on in the article.
