Thursday School: Hidden in Plain Sight Mk III! This week’s #FYUZ24 was held in the redeveloped Docklands – or rather Smart Docklands! – area of Dublin. While a lot of focus has been upon the connected street furniture there, no less care has been taken over the rooftops. On buildings overlooking the Liffey the macro antennas are hidden behind GRP cylinders designed to mimic chimney flues. In addition to being accurately colour matched to the buildings, the curved faces reflect less in any one direction reducing their visibility. While the extra material will have a minor impact upon the signal, there is already a similar material forming a watertight enclosure around the antenna elements and waveguides, so this a tried and tested material technology. There will of course be a cost to this cloaking, however there are also legal and programme costs for any protracted discussions and arguments with local authority planning teams, so net costs may be modest. Honestly, What a nonsense question:- The reality is that EirGrid Group gives a cable to their clients' Homes, Businesses, Retail, Pharmaceutical, Datacentre or corner shops, which can facilitate the Maximum (MIC) amount of electricity at any one time (think water and a plastic pipe). The client then uses more or less of the cable capacity as and when needed; however, you cannot use any more than the maximum cable size at any one time, and it's fixed, not elastic, so you see how ill-informed, populist and frankly stupid this type of question is! Seanad Eireann Election 2025 - the list of all candidates and the electorate have now been published over the weekend in Iris Oifigiúl - the official journal /gazette of the government of Ireland Notices of government business are published in Iris Oifigiúl twice weekly since 1922, when it replaced the gazette of the Dublin Castle administration on 31 January 1922. I am honoured to be nominated by my energy and engineering industry colleagues, as one of the 27 candidates to contest 9 seats the on the Industrial and Commercial Panel. https://lnkd.in/e--KvPuU My focus if elected will be advocating for all forms of renewable energy, with pragmatic and practical measures to address the climate and bio-diversity crisis. People in my network will know I am passionate about climate action, and look to change the sometimes overly negative, alarmist, doom-laden narrative around this. I firmly believe that while climate action is absolutely a huge challenge, it is also a huge opportunity for us all on the island of Ireland. One very current example of this is ; Curtailment and dispatch down of renewable electricity generation. We are awaiting the final numbers, but up to 18% of all renewable electricity produced on the island of Ireland in 2024 was curtailed off or "wasted". From a narrow electricity sector perspective - this is a huge problem. However if we zoom out, and look it this issue across sectors, it is actually a huge opportunity. This wasted or curtailed green electricity is an ideal raw material for green hydrogen (and green ammonia). This green hydrogen could be used to generate dispatchable green electricity, used to back up and facilitate further increased levels of intermittent wind and solar in our electricity system Energy Sector integration and collaboration like this is key to climate action. If I am elected to the Seanad Éireann I will advocate and work collaboratively with colleagues in the Oireachtas, to promote and deliver this integrated approach, to address the challenges, and capture the opportunities. There is an ICT tender winding its way through the OGP / DPER at the moment that ties all state bodies to US hardware which is subject to the 2001 Patriot Act & also Chinese hardware 😬 The Irish State either on purpose or through incompetence is attempting to effectively ban EU owned secure IT hardware brands from all state organisations with irrational tender minimum requirements that no EU IT manufacturer can fulfil. This has implications for state security, EU digital sovereignty and may have implications in the event of a tariff war with Trump controlled USA.
