As we contemplate musical chairs with the Irish weather this summer it’s sometimes hard to grasp the full impact of global heating. Timely research from the ERSI provides analysis on the impact on public health from rising global temperatures which is stark reading for anyone involved in Irish health care.  The study correlated Met Éireann data with hospitalisation figures which showed spikes in admissions on hot days for patients with circulatory, respiratory and infectious diseases, and amongst younger people (14 years and under).  With many of our national health systems already under considerable pressure, can we afford to put extra climate-related burden on our hospitals and health care providers, not to mention the impact on 1,000s of people with serious health conditions? Ireland's National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) is tasked with managing healthcare wait times and enhancing patient access to treatment. Faced with a challenge of consolidating vast, fragmented healthcare data, the NTPF needed a more effective way to provide visibility into patient queues, facilitate better decision-making, and improve accountability across the healthcare sector. To address these issues, NTPF partnered with Spanish Point Technologies and Microsoft to develop the Patient Access Management System (PAMS) using Power Platform. Since the launch in 2019, the number of patients managed through PAMS has grown from 30,000 to over 160,000 - with a significant reduction in patient waiting times. Looking forward, NTPF aims to expand this data solution across more healthcare facilities in Ireland, further strengthening the country's healthcare infrastructure. Great article in the Irish Times by Ronan Glynn. As political attention in Ireland shifts from election campaigns to government formation, the healthcare debate pivots towards addressing winter pressures and long-term challenges posed by an ageing population. Despite a 70% increase in Irish health funding since 2019, healthcare providers are struggling to meet demand, with critical workforce shortages and rising costs. Ronan argues for a paradigm shift, viewing health not as a cost but as an investment in economic growth and societal well-being. Our CEO Niall Gleeson was on RTE Radio One on Sunday with Justin McCarthy on the This Week programme. He shared the reality and challenges of increased demands for water supply and wastewater capacity and what is needed to resolve these issues. To attempt to deliver 50,000 homes, increased investment is required, however we are clear it’s not just increased and sustained multi-annual funding that is vital for delivery, it’s a big ramp up in planning and consents, accelerating abstraction licensing, getting Greater Dublin Drainage Project (our solution to providing the Greater Dublin Area with a solution on increased wastewater capacity) resourced in An Bord Pleanala and accelerating the Water Supply Project. None of this is easy but cross collaboration across infrastructure providers, is key to success. Whilst Uisce Éireann Irish Water navigates these challenges, you can help by conserving water. It’s a precious resource. Only use what you need. It will all help.

Interesting article in The Irish Times this morning by Martin Wall indicating that the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) software to support the drafting of its board minutes. Worth a read if you are on a Board or in the Corporate Governance space as no doubt will have implications down the line.

TL;DR: The next few years for digital health in Ireland should look like: 1) Ireland introduces a National Shared Care Record, promising seamless access to patient records and revolutionising healthcare data management 2) The Shared Care Record ensures continuity of care, empowers patients to engage actively, and improves overall health outcomes and patient experience. At the same time as Ireland is organising its health system into regions, the project is both an enabler and a safety net around the changes. 3) The success of the Shared Care Record paves the way for improved communication, resource utilisation, and data-driven decision-making, leading to a more integrated and patient-centric healthcare system, with patients connected to their care by the HSE app being plugged in.

The end of the Accelerator Era Ireland’s state-backed tech accelerator, the National Digital Research Centre (NDRC), has announced it will shut down in November 2025. Founded in 2006, the NDRC explained that the government has “concluded that the enterprise ecosystem has evolved significantly” and, as a result, will not extend the accelerator’s contract beyond next year. Until then, operations will continue as usual. This development signals a broader shift in the startup ecosystem. By 2025, I believe the traditional accelerator model will be largely outdated. A similar trend is likely in Italy, where, within the next two years, many of the 20+ accelerators launched under CDP Cassa Depositi e Prestiti's Rete Nazionale Acceleratori program will (quietly) close their doors (disclaimer: this is just my opinion). Why? - Accelerators (except a few ones) have proven to be often economically unsustainable, with limited funding and a reliance on corporate sponsors who may no longer see sufficient value in supporting them. - The startup ecosystems have evolved, favoring more targeted, flexible, and scalable models over the traditional accelerator approach (and with a larger need to focus on later stage funding rather than seed). Applications to the BioInnovate Ireland 2025/2026 programme are now open. The programme, in combination with Enterprise Ireland’s Commercialisation Fund, has an excellent pedigree and impressive track record for systematically nurturing medtech scaling companies that are competitive (and often successful) in the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator programme in Horizon Europe. The EIC Accelerator programme sets a very high bar, and involves competing with the best deeptech scale ups in Europe for blended finance awards of €2.5m in grant and/or €10m in equity funding. Building Momentum in Vision Technology   Digital Manufacturing Ireland (DMI) and Boston Scientific proudly hosted the kick-off meeting for the Visual Cognitive Manufacturing Group (VCMG) collaboration group, focusing on the Qualification of Automated Vision Inspections.   With close to 100 participants joining virtually, the session demonstrated the power of addressing critical industry challenges and the value of collaborative efforts in driving adoption of vision systems.   Highlights from the kick-off meeting: > Introduced the VCMG mission to advance vision systems in manufacturing. > Explored challenges for validating AI and machine vision systems including tackling compliance, validation, and a lack of industry examples. > Engaged participants to shape future discussions, ensuring an industry-driven and collaborative approach. > Shared plans for quarterly virtual meetings and an annual face-to-face event to deepen engagement.   The VCMG aims to position Ireland as a global leader in vision technology for manufacturing, fostering partnerships between academia, industry, and tech innovators.   Interested in joining this journey?
