This is a really positive first step for retail investment in Ireland. Having inflated away €30bn over the past 4 years, Irish savers need as much encouragement as possible to make better long term decisions. The recommendations of the funds review report are well overdue and to be welcomed. Here’s hoping that the next government moves to implement. “Retail Investment: The review team has made recommendations to: - better align the tax on investment funds and life assurance products with that of direct equities by removing deemed disposal and aligning the rate of tax to 33%. These are big changes, which could help many cohorts of society in saving and investing for major life events or for retirement. The roadmap to simplification is not straightforward and could take a few years to implement, if agreed by the next Government. There are recommendations for a mapping of the savings and investment landscape, an annual forum on savings and investment and surveys of retail investors, to better inform the policy work of the Department.”

The éist report, based on the Edelman Trust research model, shows trust in retail banking among the Irish public entering positive territory for the first time since IBCB began measuring in 2021. The findings reflect a renewed sense of trust in banks generally and the highest trust levels recorded to date: a 16-point increase among the general public and a substantial 33-point rise among SMEs. Speaking about the 2024 éist findings, CEO of the IBCB, Marion Kelly, said: “Since our establishment in 2019, the IBCB and our member banks have focused on rebuilding trust in banking in Ireland and this survey is a key means for us to assess the impact of this work. Over the past four years, findings have consistently shown steady increases in trust in the Irish banking sector. While there is still work to do to reach the same levels of trust in banking found across many other jurisdictions, the progress to date is significant.” You can read the annual report on our website :

Weekly research from RegTech Analyst 84% of respondents have some form of automation or technology to manage their AML/CFT processes    PwC carried out a survey amongst regulated Irish financial services firms in Summer 2023 covering a wide range of industries, including funds, banking, e-money, payment services and insurance firms. The majority of respondents, accounting for 84%, utilize some form of automation or technology to manage their AML/CFT processes. However, this technology is fragmented, with 31% relying on multiple interconnected AML/CFT systems and another 30% operating multiple standalone systems. Over recent years, there has been a significant uptick in the use of technology for AML/CFT processes, driven by the goals of reducing operational costs, leveraging data analytics, and achieving a comprehensive 'single customer view' for complete customer risk assessment. Despite the increased reliance on technology, only one-third of respondents are considering investing in new AML technology within the next year, though over half are contemplating such investments within the next three years. Furthermore, while 52% of respondents have automated some or all of their KYC collection processes, a considerable amount of manual intervention is still required, particularly in document collection. These disparities are notable across industries, with e-money and payment firms exhibiting more advanced automation compared to traditional financial institutions. Customer due diligence (CDD) emerges as a critical control measure against potential criminal activity within firms. Despite its importance, only 75% of firms conduct annual periodic reviews for high-risk customers, highlighting a potential gap in risk management practices. Medium and low-risk customers are reviewed less frequently, with over 30% of firms relying on trigger events to update customer information. However, practices vary across industries, with the Asset & Wealth Management sector exhibiting a higher reliance on periodic reviews for medium and low-risk customers. Overall, there is a consensus among respondents that further automation is needed to enhance the CDD onboarding process and ensure robust risk management practices.

A cohort of financial advisers and asset managers behemoth Vanguard have called for a ban on commission payments for financial products after an increase of mis-selling in Ireland. In the last few years, Irish investors have been persuaded to move their money from low-yielding cash deposit accounts. However, they have been persuaded by certain financial advisers to invest in products, such as complex structured investments, where the adviser earns a payment for the sale. Our latest research conducted by Ipsos B&A has found that 7 in 10 over-60s believe it is difficult for someone their age to get a loan from their bank – a number which has risen 25% in the space of just two years from 56% in 2022. As I note in this RTE piece, the ECB delivered an early Christmas present to borrowers at its final meeting of the year, reducing interest rates by a quarter-point, in what was the fourth cut of 2024. New staff projections show the disinflation process is well advanced in the Euro area and have GDP expanding in 2025. The growth outlook for the zone is not overly stellar though; there is uncertainty related to political developments in France and Germany and global trade tensions pose a risk. While President Lagarde didn’t pre-commit to a particular path for interest rates today, EY’s expectation is that she and her colleagues will be ringing in the New Year with further cuts.
