Assessing the capabilities of additive manufacturing technologies for coral studies, education and monitoring.
Frontiers in Marine Science 5, 278
Additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing is becoming an easily accessible method to produce 3D objects ranging from medical devices to jet plane parts. However, this implies the creation of an accurate 3D digital model by Computer Assisted Design (CAD) or direct acquisition of a 3D model as well as a correct understanding of the various 3D printing technologies available with their pros and cons. Here, we present a method for editing and printing of 3D models of coral colonies for…
Additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing is becoming an easily accessible method to produce 3D objects ranging from medical devices to jet plane parts. However, this implies the creation of an accurate 3D digital model by Computer Assisted Design (CAD) or direct acquisition of a 3D model as well as a correct understanding of the various 3D printing technologies available with their pros and cons. Here, we present a method for editing and printing of 3D models of coral colonies for the generation of accurate and enhanced 3D models suitable for research and education. This is a follow-up from other papers where 3D scanning was performed on fresh coral samples from field trips and coral skeletons from museum collections using different imaging techniques (multi-image photogrammetry and Micro CT scanning). 3D scans of colonies and samples of Turbinaria sp., Leptoseris incrustans, Oulophyllia crispa, Echinopora sp., Siderastrea savignyana and Platygira daedalea were used to produce multi-material and multi-scale 3D prints. Moreover, we studied the best practices for the 3D printing processes, and potential technologies most suitable for specific attributes in this practice. Additionally, we show the innovative application of 3D printed inert reactive corals able to indicate environmental changes, along with insights into the potential uses for the proposed method and related systems in biological fields and sharing with an online community.

As the production of single use plastic packaging materials is increasing rapidly, the resultant generation of waste material is quickly becoming one of the world’s major environmental issues. These plastic materials are highly stable, with excellent material properties which can allow them to be used beyond their intended single use. To effectively utilize these recovered plastic materials, an understanding of their mechanical properties is required. The aim of this study was to assess the mechanical properties of recovered plastic bottles to prove the feasibility of utilisation for additional uses in non-shredding based recycling systems with lower energy requirements. This system would conserve the physical integrity of the bottles, using them as a raw material for new direct reuse and repurposing applications. Tensile tests were conducted on samples cut from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles considering …

Sustaining a caring relationship at a distance: Can haptics and 3D technologies overcome the deficits in 2D direct synchronous video based communication?
2017 23rd International Conference on Virtual System & Multimedia (VSMM), 1-6
Many family carers are single parents over the age of 60. Despite poor health, the majority continue to care for a son/daughter with complex needs, such as intellectual disability, autism and cognitive deficits (hereafter referred to as ID). It is estimated that only 21% of these ageing carers have made adequate plans for the future care of their son or daughter. One significant barrier to future planning is a parent's fear that they will not be able to make regular visits to their loved one if…

Despite poor health, the majority continue to care for a son/daughter with complex needs, such as intellectual disability, autism and cognitive deficits (hereafter referred to as ID). It is estimated that only 21% of these ageing carers have made adequate plans for the future care of their son or daughter. One significant barrier to future planning is a parent's fear that they will not be able to make regular visits to their loved one if he or she leaves the family home. People with complex needs are often placed in new residences that prove difficult or impossible for parents/guardians to access. This fear of separation can prevent carers from engaging in future planning. A review of modern communication technologies, for maintaining a distant caring/family relationship, reveals that 2D synchronous video based communication tools such as Skype and FaceTime do not …

Synergy Parks: collaborative strategies to valorise side streams between companies
INTERREG IV. B NWE ARBOR
This document is part of the deliverables for ARBOR, an Interreg IVB project for North-West Europe. ARBOR stands for Accelerating Renewable Energies through valorisation of Biogenic Organic Raw Material. Various of the projects consider multi-stakeholder collaborations, with or without a financial share of ARBOR in the project realisation. This project runs from 2011 till 2015. The framework for ARBOR are the EU 202020 targets in order to reduce climate change and the fact that biomass accounts for 50% of the renewables in Europe. Although a lot of expertise concerning biomass is available, it is noted that this information is not disseminated in a coordinated way, nor is it related to commercial exploitations. That is why the ARBOR-mission is to accelerate the sustainable development and use of biomass in North West Europe, to facilitate the achievement of the EU 202020 objectives. The increasing competition and environmental pressure and growing demand for food and resource efficiency requires cooperation and collaboration between agriculture and other business (Smeets, 2009) especially in the highly populated NWE. When companies systematically cooperate to achieve more sustainable biomass utilization through creating production synergies, we call this a synergy park. Ideally, synergy parks can be called a system innovation, that bring new technical, commercial, institutional, and social connections geared towards sustainable development. Ongoing collaboration and advice on stakeholder management should improve the synergy park composition, to the benefit of optimal biomass valorisation and energy efficiency. This …

This study demonstrates a mass production method using nanoporous Anodized Aluminum Oxide (AAO) templates as mould insert tools that are used to structure large area polymer surfaces by a micro injection moulding process. SEM and water contact angle measurements served to evaluate the effect of nanostructures on surface properties. Embryonic human endothelial cells were cultured on nano-structured and ultra-smooth surfaces of polymer parts. Experimental results indicated that nano-pillar features sized from ~100nm to 250nm were easily replicated on these same polymer surfaces. The contact angles varied from 3o to 9o. The nanoporous AAO templates were able to retain their pore integrity very well for ~80 injection moulding cycles: this suggests they they could be a potential mould tool for large area patterning of polymer surfaces. The endothelial cell culture analysis indicates that cell growth was not significantly affected by nano-topography compared to the smooth surfaces (baseline RA ~6nm) and both surfaces had equally good cell adhesion.
