Scaling Innovation Panel discussion: - "Technology for technology's sake doesn't work in healthcare" Una Kearns - Ireland needs to adopt best of Irish health innovation or we'll lose them. However, also need to balance by adopting global best-practise solutions" Andy Bleaden - New consultant contract has €20k for 'innovation' and can be pooled to support new solution/ pilot test / research. - Do NOT add to clinicians existing workload - need to make adoption as seamless / painless as possible. - Ensure you work with local partners in target markets. Ireland has unique position of being able to use existing partnerships with FDI companies to support Scaling internationally. #smarthealth24

Endeavor Ireland
KPMG Ireland has released their latest Venture Pulse Q3 2024 report, outlining the current state of the VC landscape. The report provides a comprehensive analysis of global venture capital trends, with data sourced from PitchBook. Irish medtech companies Luminate Medical and Loci Orthopaedics secured the top deals this quarter. As Anna Scally of KPMG Ireland noted on RTE’s Morning Ireland, while overall investment is down compared to Q2'24, 28 deals were completed, with over $100.9 million invested in Irish companies. With falling interest rates, the new cycle of the Seed and Venture Capital Scheme (2025-2029), along with the enhanced Angel Investor CGT relief, we can expect to see a jump in VC investments in Irish start-ups and scale-ups from early 2025. A recent example of strong funding activity in the Irish startup scene is the $7.6 million pre-seed raise by AI platform Zerve AI, led by Phily Hayes, Jason Hillary, and Greg Michaelson. As we look ahead to the rest of 2024, we are interested to see how the trends mentioned in KPMG Ireland’s report emerge. Buckle in… “An (Irish) government study commissioned earlier this year found that 30pc of jobs in Ireland could be affected by AI — either lost or substantially altered. That equates to 900,000 people.” Could this be 10m people in the UK? Recruitment will be one of the most impacted professions, virtually unrecognisable over the next 3 years. Exciting times.

Technically Write IT
The most urgent skills required by the Medtech sector right now are: 💻 Digitisation 📈 Data Analytics 🏭 Automation 🤖 AI The Talent to Thrive: Future Skills for Ireland’s Medtech Sector 2024-2028 report that was launched yesterday by Irish Medtech Skillnet It highlights the sector’s workforce is expected to grow to 56,000 workers in 2028. "A sector that strives to improve the lives and wellness of people all over the world" Dr. Eoghan Ó Faoláin, of Irish Medtech It's striking that the urgent skills are in digitalisation and maximising value through automation and making better decisions with data. As companies digitalise the content creation process for technical documents such as SOPs, IFUs, and regulatory reports, it becomes more important you know how to reuse core components of content to streamline your processes in a way that still meets regulation. Some of you met Emmet Kearney yesterday who had a lot of great discussion about how Technically Write IT has years of experience supporting companies in Pharma and Life Sciences. We specialise moving content to become Intelligent Information which maximises your content reuse and automation opportunities. We also offer a range of training to support you as you digitalise the content creation process for technical documents such as SOPs, IFUs, and regulatory reports. #SkillsReport #IrishMedtech #Event #Skills #Medtech

Gardaí have raised concerns drug traffickers could set up their own laboratories in Ireland to manufacture synthetic opioids given the dramatic changes in the drug market. Sources point out that Ireland has already seen the emergence of new substances, including nitazene, a super-strong synthetic opioid, in the last year — with mass outbreaks across country — and, earlier this month, synthetic benzodiazepines in Portlaoise Prison. The increased supply of synthetic opioids into Europe is being linked with the almost complete collapse of opium production in Afghanistan last year as a result of a 2022 ban by the extremist Taliban regime. This has meant the supply of heroin into Europe is largely coming from stockpiles, with authorities unsure as to when those stores will run out. UN and EU drug agencies are concerned drug traffickers will turn to synthetic opioids to fill much of the market in Europe. "It the diversification of drug trafficking networks and is the future challenge,” a Garda source said. “It's very difficult to deal with. Labs will be set up everywhere and Ireland is not immune.” EU drug agencies are concerned at the potential spread of nitazenes, including any move to start manufacturing the drug in Europe given the presence of drug laboratories on the continent. The EU police agency Europol on Friday released details of an operation by Polish and Ukrainian authorities which uncovered a massive synthetic opioid laboratory network. Police, assisted by Europol, raided seven linked labs and seized 195kgs of "crystal methadone", a substance that European sources told the Irish Examiner has not been seen within the EU. It is thought this substance may have been for the Ukraine market. Methadone is prescribed in the treatment of heroin addiction in Ireland, but illegal crystal methadone is far more powerful. Polish police also uncovered 153kgs of Alpha-PVP, used in the production of mephedrone, a synthetic cathinone, a popular stimulant drug. The operation came as a drug-testing service in Britain, Mandrake, which is attached to Manchester Polythetic University, said the current illicit drugs market “has never been more dangerous” and cited the circulation of “extremely dangerous pills” containing nitazenes. Health System Intelligence (HSi)
Revolutionary population health AI platform identifies major opportunities to improve Irish health system Health System Intelligence Limited (HSi), a specialist healthcare consultancy using the ‘Insight™’ AI Business Intelligence platform, has identified the scale of excessive healthcare spending in the Republic of Ireland. Insight™ modelling identifies maximum budgets required to be at €8.5B (employing c.72,000 employees), compared to a current total Government budget of €22.5B (c.160,000 employees). Adjusted to include the fact that Private Health Insurance premiums are paid by 47% of the population equalling €3.2B, (or €1,322 per person), the true budget requirement reduces to €4,726B. The full report includes detailed integrated and operationalised research datapoints and highlights and details major opportunities for the Irish Government to significantly improve the health system, reduce costs to the taxpayer and remove waiting lists. Additional Government agencies and Quangos are not included in the analysis. Professor Lindsay Sales of the HSi Advisory Board commented: “The AI platform Insight™ tells us what an integrated health system needs by population health demand rather than conventional historical precedent. In this research we have been really surprised by the scale of excess spending coupled with low productivity highlighted. When we also looked at the quantum of patients on outpatient and inpatient waiting lists over 6 months, this confirms the need for major reform, particularly considering future demographic risk to exacerbate the current obvious structural imbalance.” Mr. Gary Burden, CFO of HSi adds: “Ireland is the least value for money health system we have researched. Nearly half the population are paying twice for healthcare, be that by tax and private health insurance, or direct self-pay. Countries such as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia are all in the process of conducting major health system transformation – including the development of universal health insurance - and they have nowhere near the levels of excess spending per capita, supernumerary workforce levels, or 30% of the beneficiary population waiting more than 6 months for an Outpatient appointment! Interestingly, the ‘Insight™’ platform shows higher capitation rates than currently paid to private health insurers by several hundred Euros, so we know further research by our refinement process will further reduce the total health spend needed if the systems were more efficient. We can see the Irish Government can make immediate savings in hospital and primary spending of at least €2.5B per annum over the next 2 years if accompanied by a coherent strategic implementation plan.” For the report - please contact us via https://lnkd.in/e-rgweMe

This is the perfect time to introduce SPRYT to the Irish public. We will shift the view of medical administrators from gatekeepers to facilitators of care. IPPOSI (the Irish Platform for Patients’ Organisations, Science and Industry) should consider how companies like Spryt can make healthcare better for everyone. If we can do it with the NHS in the UK, then we should be allowed do it for the HSE and the Irish people too. Public asked for their views on AI in healthcare https://lnkd.in/eHRWszjq #aihealthcare #changinghealthcare #hse #noshows #augmentedadmin
