About us
PorterShed is the ultimate mashup of entrepreneurs, startups, growth companies, educational institutions, state agencies and local government. After 8 successful years in supporting the tech start-up community, PorterShed has achieved one of its primary goals to establish an innovation ecosystem in downtown Galway that creates a synergistic relationship between people, companies, and place, that facilitates idea generation, open learning, collaboration and accelerates commercialisation. Spaces for entrepreneurs need to be complemented by the skills to succeed as a startup founder - so that people know how to progress their idea, technology or passion through to a successful startup, or to produce a new innovation within existing companies. PorterShed allows entrepreneurs to use collaborative spaces, coworking spaces, mingle with other entrepreneurs and have efficient access to everything from insights into the latest technology to legal and financial advice. Rather than endure long commutes and daily congestion, residents of PorterShed can choose to work and live in places that are connected, walkable, bike-able and connected by technology. PorterShed was set up to address a number of needs in Galway. A recurring theme was the lack of a downtown innovation hub for incoming and indigenous startups - fast forward 8 years later, we now have three city centre locations with 300+ incredible members, 55+ indigenous tech start-ups, scale-ups and fast landing multinational tech companies. PorterShed is a showcase for Galway’s tech startup scene. We want companies to come here to start their ideas, to grow, and to scale before succeeding. Whether we are providing space for start-ups to develop in, pointing founders in the right direction, or amplifying their wins, we want to see them succeed; their success is our success, and we love being part of their journeys. Understanding your CAP table helps you clearly see ownership and equity distribution, which is essential for making informed decisions during fundraising, investor negotiations, and long-term planning. Another week, another round of great insights from Kristofer O'Shea and the Byrne Wallace Shields LLP team 👇 Take a look
As a founder, one of the most critical aspects of your startup's financial health and future growth is your cap table. The cap table is a detailed breakdown of your company's ownership structure, including equity shares, convertible notes, options, and warrants. While it might be tempting to bring in numerous investors and offer various equity incentives early on, maintaining a simple cap table can provide significant advantages. Byrne Wallace Shields LLP Corporate Senior Associate, Kristofer O'Shea looks at why founders should keep their cap table simple, in the fourth part of our five part “From Day One” series. #FromDayOne #Startup #Venture

Well done Erin A. McCarthy the STEMMA: Systems of Transmitting Early Modern Manuscript Verse, 1475-1700 Hackathon was one for the books.
Some of our participants from the STEMMA hackathon last month sat down to chat with our friends at PorterShed about the project and the work they did during the hackathon to create these special interviews. We'll be dropping these great insights into the event over the next couple days - but how better to start than to learn more about STEMMA from Erin A. McCarthy herself? Intellectual Property (IP) is a critical asset for founders because it protects the unique ideas, products, and technologies that differentiate their business in the market. For early-stage companies, securing IP early helps safeguard innovation from imitation, enhances credibility, and lays the groundwork for long-term value creation. Read what Kristofer O'Shea and Jane O'Grady from Byrne Wallace Shields LLP have to say below
As a founder, your original works, brand, and innovations are the lifeblood of your business. Yet, in the rush to build products, attract customers, and secure funding, it’s easy to overlook properly securing one crucial asset: your intellectual property. Why is IP so important? IP - whether it’s your brand name, logo, inventions, software, or creative content - sets you apart from competitors and adds tangible value to your business. Investors and partners often look for strong IP protection as a sign of a company’s long-term potential and credibility. Without it, you risk losing your competitive edge to others securing similar rights on a priority basis before you apply to register your IP or seeing your hard work copied or misused which can be expensive to prevent or redress without clear proof you own the IP being appropriated. Byrne Wallace Shields LLP IP Partner Jane O'Grady and Corporate Senior Associate, Kristofer O'Shea looks at how founders can protect their IP strategically, in the third part of our five part “From Day One” series. #FromDayOne #Startup #Venture
