The Naughton Scholarship programme was established in 2008 to promote the study of engineering, science and technology at third-level in Ireland. Each year 36 students are awarded Naughton Scholarships. We are proud to say that this year ISE’s Fionn Ó’Murchú is one of them. If you are interested in studying a STEM subject at third-level find out more about Immersive Software Engineering by visiting https://lnkd.in/etig6heJ

Our revolutionary, ambitious approach will create the best software engineers on the planet.
About us
Imagine a computer science degree where you learn by doing. Where you learn in studios working on projects, not in lecture halls. Where you never take an end-of-term exam. Where you get a Masters qualification in four years. Where you spend half your time being paid to solve some of society’s toughest problems in the world’s best companies, and half your time learning with the best lecturers and researchers. This is Immersive Software Engineering at the University of Limerick. In your four years at ISE you’ll complete up to five paid residencies, each between three and six months long. Each residency teaches you a suite of concrete skills and gives you the opportunities to practice them. Throughout the degree you’ll alternate your time between on-campus learning blocks and residencies in partner companies. “This course is a quantum leap in how software engineering is taught. Its revolutionary, ambitious approach will create the best software engineers on the planet — people who will shake and shape tomorrow's world.”

The summer of 2023 changed young engineer Ryan Morrissey’s life. An 8-week stint in the Patch youth accelerator, where he co-founded Induct (the latest startup in NDRC Accelerator 2025 intake), sparked an entrepreneurial passion to build. Two years later, Ryan is fully immersed in software at UL’s prestigious Immersive Software Engineering course, building a new startup idea Kepri Solar, which he hacked at a recent NDRC Startup Sprint (and took home first prize for!), and is now validating on the NDRC Pre-Accelerator. How did he get here? Ryan calls the #StartupSprint a “game-changer” where his cofounders got first-hand structure, guidance, and mentors who “gave us the belief that we were on the right track.” Have you a startup idea brewing? Join the Startup Sprint in Limerick’s Engine Hubs this March 29th with RDI Hub. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dxYejCqR

"We celebrate a diverse group of women actively thriving in historically male spaces and showing the next generation that they are not the exception – women belong here…" Two UL academics are among Silicon Republic's recent list showcasing women leading the way in STEM, Dr Sarah Guerin, Department of Physics and Professor Sarah Hudson, Department of Chemical Sciences are among the women whose research is spotlighted. Also making the list is recent graduate of UL's Product Design and Technology Olivia Humpreys, global winner of the 2024 James Dyson Award under the Medical Devices category. Olivia has also recently been named Limerick Person of the Year 2024. https://lnkd.in/exW4XpHT #StudyAtUL #StayCurious #HomeofFirsts

In health, I often engage in conversations about topics I feel I have no right to be involved with. Over the years, from work and coffee chats with people with disabilities, patients, mothers and many more, I've learned not to be passive regarding the challenges of those who have different lived experiences to me. There's a purpose to presenting and sharing solutions to challenges in independent living, breastfeeding, menstruation and many, many other daily issues millions of people face: To encourage others to join in the co-design of an inclusive world that hears these types of challenges and responds to them. I always get nervous getting on a stage to highlight these topics but a little validation this week helped give me the energy to keep moving forward in this field. I reflected on the 90+ individual pieces of feedback from University of Limerick over the last two years I've visited them. I'd like to share just a handful of messages that meant a lot to me: "Opened my mind to innovation in healthcare..." "I would like to thank you because I have never seen anyone advocate for assistive technology. Keep it up." "...you’ve inspired me to ask questions and see if I can help." "I thought your talk was extremely interesting and has huge potential to change lives - something I would like to explore in the future." "I really commend you for putting period products on the slides. I think it’s extremely important for things as such not to be concealed." "I actually gained some new motivation to innovate healthcare." "Thank you for shining light on assistive technology and showing how interesting this area is." "Thanks for inspiring me" "Thanks to David for highlighting very important topics when it comes to cancer, disability and femtech." "Great talk. Very interesting. Loved that women were being brought into and ally your work helping people is very inspiring." "Thank you for broadening my horizons on the influence small technological advancements can have on people's daily life in the proper use case." "I found the insights into assistive technology really inspiring and made me think about all the opportunities out there in healthcare - thanks." I'm excited to see where the future takes these engaged students - hopefully we'll share their research and innovation in these fields in the coming years! Massive thanks to Roisin Lyons, PhD and the team in Limerick for creating opportunities like this for their students! A real honour to be invited back to the University of Limerick yesterday. As part of IF@UL, I spoke to 500 students about my own entrepreneurial journey - along with my work at the NDRC and RDI Hub. I was blown away by the 4 other incredible speakers: Alannah Pardy, David Pollard, Caren Schwannauer & Ben Sheehan - truly inspiring work by you all. A massive thanks to Roisin Lyons, PhD for running yet another wonderful event. The bright, vibrant energy that I feel in UL is a real testament to Roisin’s inspiring input. And another big thanks to John O'Donnell for the amazing photos here. How John could capture so many brilliant angles, in such a short space of time, is astounding. Finally, a huge thanks to the wonderful students of UL - their input and engagement was superb all day. The future is bright @UL :)
