A readable and legible pixel font with an Open Font License. It was developed and iterated upon for a couple released and unreleased games and graphical editors.  You can see how Bookxel was used in small games such as SwitchedSquashMcdonald's FarmSlightly Unconventional Platformer. It uses some techniques and guidelines to make the reading experience smooth. This makes it suitable for pixel-themed editors and versatile for pixel art games who need a general purpose font.

To keep the font clear one needs to use factors of 2 on top of the base size of 16 pixels. So for instance, font-sizes: 16, 32, 64 are suitable.

Included is a co-developed font icons pack of 16 by 16 pixels, aptly named for common functions or things. Useful as editor icons or to integrate in the text as icons. They are useful in editor applications. The icons are easily editable in shape and color with a pixel editor, such as Piskel.

For Godot engine developers there are  font presets available to keep the font clear.

For Playdate developers there are FNT formats of Bookxel available, both normal and bold, which were provided by https://splodd.itch.io/

Tools used: BitFontMaker2 for the font and Piskel for the icons.

I really love this font. Thank you for all your work on it! I’ve used https://play.date/caps/ to recreate your work as a .fnt for use in my playdate game development. I’d love to send you the file so you can host it here for others to use too!

Hey Adam,

This is great to hear! I would love to add bookxel.fnt. The Playdate seems like a surprisingly  fitting platform for Booxkel. You can try messaging me on Bluesky(https://bsky.app/profile/bokuh.bsky.social), beware I don't use  it much yet. Or if you have a better suggestion is fine too.

I popped you a message :)

Thanks!
