Forsway is a company providing ground segment products for a satellite broadband connectivity in underserved areas around world and we reckon that is still around half of world population is underserved Forsway has started a new project to provide Standalone Non-Public Network (SNPN) 5G NTN 3GPP R17 based solution integrated with the existing satellite ground segment products in order to target unserved parts of Earth, such as ships deep in ocean, airplanes, buses, trains, so called on-board connectivity, then also as a backup solution in case of disaster where most of public infrastructure is broken down, and in some cases where is a coverage gap. The future of wireless services of all types is likely to involve more spectrum-sharing and other more sophisticated approaches to #spectrum assignment and management. This applies to #5G, #6G, #WiFi, #satellite, audiovisual and various classes of aviation and martime networks, as well as government and defence usage. Sharing will occur based on multiple dimensions - location, duration, directionality, power and obviously frequency. That, in turn, will require a range of key enablers, including technological components such as spectrum databases, sensing systems, better transceivers, mapping tools, cross-technology signalling and much more. There will also need to be streamlined regulatory processes, spectrum marketplaces, and a whole variety of use-cases for AI + spectrum. There will also be a need for more international cooperation and (hopefully) eventual harmonisation. The evolution of spectrum-sharing is a central theme for me at the moment, and something that regularly crops up in my discussions with regulators, operators, vendors and investors. #LEO has unlocked many opportunities at sea and on land. The adoption of new networks is progressing rapidly, and it will be a few years before they achieve a truly global reach. The delay is caused by differences in local regulations and safety policies. As such, technical integrators have taken centre stage in #LEO implementation. With nearly 30 years in satcom and decades in network management, IEC Telecom has the know-how and resources to support this process in Central Asia. There's been an interesting update from Telecom Infra Project who's partnering with VIAVI Solutions to expand the testing capabilities of the Viavi Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR). VALOR is the result of a $21.7 million grant from the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF). This announcement is welcome news for TIP, who previously contributed comments on how the NTIA could structure and administer grants, as well as submitting its own grant applications. And while TIP’s own funding submissions were ultimately unsuccessful, this development highlights the organisation’s significant role in the industry. Technology-neutral licensing or Technology-neutrality (commonly known as spectrum refarming) is the ability to refarm spectrum used for legacy networks (#2G and #3G) for #4G and #5G services, at a pace driven by market demand. In general terms, technology neutrality refers to the repurposing of spectrum bands to more efficient technologies. Technology neutrality is an important enabler of legacy network sunsets. The initial rollout of 4G in many pioneer markets was based on technology neutrality and spectrum refarming. As of the middle of the last decade, nearly half of 4G deployments globally were running on refarmed 2G and 3G spectrum. Between 2015 and mid-August 2023, a total of 91 networks were shut down, of which 43 were 2G networks and 48 were 3G networks. At least 148 networks will be shut down between Q4 2023 and 2030, based on announced plans from operators.

🚀 Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell: With IoT Capabilities for 2025—But Is It a Serious IoT Contender? Starlink's new Direct-to-Cell service is an exciting development for global connectivity. By connecting ordinary LTE-enabled phones to satellites, it promises to eliminate coverage dead zones, potentially reshaping industries that depend on seamless connectivity. However, when viewed through the lens of IoT applications, especially in environments where Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) like LTE-M and NB-IoT excel, some gaps become evident. The service appears aligned with CAT1, CAT1 Bis, and CAT4 technologies rather than traditional LPWAN protocols. While this enables higher data rates, it misses key advantages like low power consumption, scalability for billions of devices, and deep indoor coverage provided by terrestrial LPWAN solutions with cell towers. For IoT solutions that prioritize battery life and efficient operation for low-bandwidth use cases, LPWAN technologies remain superior in 2025. That said, Direct-to-Cell holds promise for remote IoT use cases where terrestrial LPWAN networks are not available—think disaster recovery, maritime IoT, and unconnected regions. As IoT professionals, the challenge ahead is to combine strengths from both satellite and terrestrial technologies to create solutions that truly work anywhere. Leveraging Machine Learning for Interference Coordination in Heterogeneous Networks Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) present unique challenges in interference coordination due to the coexistence of multiple cell types and dynamic user distributions. However, the integration of advanced machine learning techniques offers a promising solution to address these challenges and enhance overall network performance. Key Challenges in HetNets Spectrum Scarcity:  Limited radio spectrum availability leads to interference issues, degrading network performance. Uncoordinated Deployment: Unplanned small cell deployment within macrocell coverage creates complex interference patterns. Dynamic User Distribution:  Fluctuating user distribution adds complexity to resource allocation and interference management. Machine Learning Techniques for Interference Coordination Supervised Learning:  Models complex relationships between network parameters and interference patterns for accurate predictions and decision-making. Unsupervised Learning:  Identifies hidden patterns in network data, facilitating the development of efficient interference coordination strategies. Reinforcement Learning: Enables autonomous decision-making in dynamic network environments for real-time adaptation to changing interference conditions. Proposed ML-based ICIC Framework Data Collection: Comprehensive dataset creation involving network parameters, user distributions, and interference patterns for subsequent analysis and model training. Feature Extraction: Identification of key factors influencing interference and resource allocation in HetNets. Model Training: Training of machine learning models to learn patterns and relationships between network parameters and interference levels. Interference Mitigation and Resource Allocation Interference Identification: Trained machine learning models quantify interference levels for effective interference mitigation strategies. Resource Allocation: Dynamic network resource allocation to minimize interference and maximize overall system performance. Interference Mitigation: Incorporation of various interference suppression and management techniques based on insights gained from machine learning models. Results and Future Directions The proposed ML-based ICIC framework has demonstrated significant improvements in throughput, interference reduction, and resource utilization. As HetNets continue to evolve, the integration of more sophisticated learning algorithms and real-time data analytics is essential for the development of truly intelligent and self-organizing wireless communication systems.

More often than not, key mission-critical sectors such as public safety, rail, utilities & defense only get limited dedicated spectrum for their 4G / 5G networks, typically 2 x 3 or 2 x 5 MHz. These networks are vital for saving lives and averting serious impacts 🚨, so meeting the demanding performance requirements for voice, data & video services is crucial. I’ve written another piece on US #spectrum policy & #mobile bands - and what should be done in preparation for #WRC27 over the next 3 years. This is part of my ongoing focus on global spectrum-sharing policy, as well as my advisory work with SFTF. This time it has been published via Fierce Network. My view is that the US should directly engage with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) process at multiple levels, to push for greater understanding and technological innovation in sharing approaches. In particular the focus of IMT (ie #5G & #6G) spectrum should be on regulators assuming a “sharing-native” future in the 2030s, instead of the historic focus of assigning exclusive licences. This should be reflected in any figure IMT identifications & footnotes. In addition, it should be a core part of the various study groups and working parties’ efforts. There also needs to be far more realism about mobile traffic on the international stage - its flattening growth, the many non-credible forecasts, its localisation to specific areas & the impact of aspects such as FWA and indoor use. A critical aspect is dealing with the proposed IMT study bands for WRC-27, which seem “coincidentally” to be exactly the same as those used within NATO for military communications. At the moment, the US #CBRS band is one of the leading examples of dynamic spectrum sharing in practice. The work by NTIA & NSF is also advancing the technological base, including the role of AI. It should be advocating this work more globally, especially at ITU. But first, the mainstream US mobile industry needs to get onboard. #spectrumpolicy #telecompolicy #technology #regulation

Addressing 5G limitations: They might have highlighted areas where 5G falls short and presented use cases for IMT-2030 that address these limitations. This could include aspects like:Network capacity: IMT-2030 use cases might require significantly higher capacity to support a future with even more connected devices and data-intensive applications. Latency: B5GPC might have advocated for even lower latency in 6G to enable real-time applications that are currently not feasible with 5G. Security: With an increase in network complexity and reliance on critical infrastructure, B5GPC might have stressed the importance of robust security measures within IMT-2030 use cases. #Global #5G #EMF #Surveys – 61 Surveys / 31 countries / Low EMF Across the world, national health agencies, government regulators, academia, test laboratories, mobile operators and manufacturers have conducted extensive testing on commercial and test networks to determine 5G EMF exposure levels. These surveys show that: #International safety and testing standards are in place for all 5G frequencies including millimetre waves (mmWave). #Measured levels from 5G networks operating in all continents are low, and well below the international safety limits. #5G EMF levels are similar to other wireless technologies with little difference between frequency bands. 5G networks are designed to use radio spectrum efficiently and this is evident in the testing. Reduced signalling requirements for 5G and the use of smart antenna systems mean lower unwanted EMF levels. The typical maximum measured 5G EMF level across the surveys is less than 1% of the international public limits.
